OT- Oil and Disney

It's possible that the sister just didn't know and might have heard this from others. She wasn't necessarily spreading the wrong thing on purpose.

OP, WDW and all of the Orlando tourist sites are well inland. The oil will not affect any of that, at least not directly.

Fair enough - in which case, it would be GREAT if the OP would educate her sister and have her sister start sharing the FACTS with people, instead of misinformation :teeth:

I agree! :)

OP, will you tell your sister that she is way offbase?

Give your sister a geography lesson. Orlando is inland and landlocked so unless you had side trips planned to the beach you're fine. I think that she just wanted to rain on your parade

Ummm, seriously, uncool.:sad2:
How so? Looking at the definition below...

id·i·ot
–noun
1. an utterly foolish or senseless person.

and as a Floridian who is tired of the INCORRECT information spewed from uninformed people. I'd like to know what qualifications or reports this sister got to issue a blanket statement that the state was covered in oil and the to not go there. It was a senseless answer (the sister's)... thus the definition stands.

I think the wave pool at Typhoon Lagoon had 3 inch tarballs yesterday.
The sharks in shark reef are okay though.
No that was the suntan lotion from all the tourists...

Perhaps a better phrasing would have been her statement was idiotic. You can't judge a person's entire being by one statement they make. Have you never made a mistake or said something you wish you could take back? People make mistakes. Perhaps look up the word tolerance in your dictionary...

Back on topic. OP, I'm sure it is clear to you now, by the more helpful kind posts, that WDW is ok, your trip should be fine. Have fun!

Glad you have a dictionary, but, it's just mean. Sometimes we need to filter our thoughts before they exit the mouth. That's all I'm saying. Oy vay, it really cracks me up how mean people are to each other on these boards...

BTW, I agree with PPs about the media blowing stuff out of proportion. When we were traveling back from Florida they made it sound like the beaches were covered in tar. We stopped all over the coast on our way home and didn't see squat. I hope it stays that way because I'd like to rent a house on the beach next summer!

Honestly, I was thinking "idiot" but wouldn't have said it outright.

But seriously, this young lady needs to take a look at a map...WDW/Orlando is no where near the coast. It sounds like she is maybe young and just ignorant (not in the bad way, but uneducated way).

I'm a Floridian, and I try to be sensitive to the fact that visitors aren't aware just how large FL is, as well as its differences (north FL = deep south, vs. central FL = tourist central vs. south FL = transplants for the most part), but I was thinking about the map factor, too, as the poster above me pointed out.

Maps of FL are pretty easy to find, especially online. One of the top stories on just about every media outlet is the oil spill crisis. The time it took the OP to come here, log in, figure out what area to post this (budget board??? why not on the oil spill thread on the CB?) and type it all out, couldn't the OP have just looked at a map of Florida to see Orlando's in the middle of the state with virtually no coast exposure? I mean, sorority's in her name; that implies college or college-educated to me.

Sorry, but I'm also sick and tired of reading such nonsense from individuals who click and type and click and type without using an ounce of common sense. Our state relies on tourism exponentially. People should really think first and type after.

One thing I love about the Disboards is we are all able to give our opinion. Disney isn't near the ocean so I am not too concerned about the affect of the oil spill on Disney. I am very concerned however about the ocean and our DCL cruise in Oct. 2011. I live on Lake Michigan and we get our water from there but I feel badly for all those who are destitude and the beautiful ocean that is wrecked forever. I just got to see the ocean for the first time a few years back. My prayers and thoughts are with all those Floridians and those along the Gulf coast affected by this. It is eventually going to affect each one of us in the pocket books. It breaks my heart to see all the animals dying and people loosing their jobs.

or ignore?

As a Floridian, I take offense to folks slaming the state when they have no clue of the facts. Sorry, but i'm protective of my state... You are free to ignore my comments if you wish.

Ok, well, thank you to those who offered helpful insight!

To the others...

My sister didn't make up the fact that she heard that Florida was being affected by the oil spill- she heard it on our local news. So... should she have just swallowed up that information, not believed it, and not told me, even though she knew that we're going to Dis in October? What an IDIOT she must be for relaying information she heard and believing it! How DARE her! Give me a break, guys! :headache:

I am asking the mods to close this thread because this is getting ridiculous.

Well the OP referenced ALL of Florida. Maybe it wasn't the sister, but the OP who was maligning all of FL. Again anyone with even a tiny brain should understand that Florida is HUGE.

A friend of mine taught underachieving students at a high school in a large city in Texas for years. Everytime we come across something really stupid in customer service, etc. - She says those were "my students". I'm so glad that I do know young people with sense, or I might get very discouraged.

oh it's like fish to water when you ask for a thread to be closed down -- I read the first page yesterday & thought 'oh brother' & now here I am like a little fish cause ya asked for it to be shut down

Respectfully, YOU, as a multiple-time visitor to Central Florida, should have known and been able to educate your sister as to its location far from any ocean and so the lack of likelihood that Walt Disney World, Orlando, and Central Florida would be affected by the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

The news isn't always right - as demonstrated by this thread. It sensationalizes stories; in this particular case, whatever your sister saw or heard was either very wrong or very misunderstood.

My SIL lives on the beach and so far they haven't been affected (they are on the other side). I honestly can't see how Disney can be affected. We just got back and it was VERY crowded! Maybe people cancelled the beach and opted for Disney instead.:confused3

When did you go? People that went the last week said it was NOT crowded at all in the parks. :confused3

I bet your sister meant that the oil spill is causing tourism problems not specifically for Disney but to the state in general. I know that all along the gulf coast tourism is down. So maybe she heard that. :confused3

Putting that in your title is just going to make more people read it.

OP:
as far as your question regarding your upcoming vacation, relax!!!

(No comments on the "comments/turns" this thread took) :sad2:

I just returned a few days ago. It was NOT crowded and we had an amazing time! Wishing you a fun filled vacation! :wizard:

:rotfl2: You've got that right!

And I still fail to see have the OP could believe Disney World was somehow dealing with the oil spill. Her tag states - "The Swan- my home away from home." Is there another Swan or has she really never been to Orlando???
