I am asking this since I have no idea where else to look for any help. My oldest son licks his lip, and the skin around the top until its raw. We finally get it cleared up, and he does it again. I have tried checking with the doctor, but I was just told kids do this. If he keeps this up he is going to have a horrid scar. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do?

My DD did this for a brief time. Her dad and I went thru the ugliest divorce ever and we were told it was a nervous deal. Thankfully I was able to stop her just by talking to her and figuring out what she was upset about but she is a pretty out there kind of kid so it was not a big secret. Her Dr suggested a foul tasting lip balm and I got the impression that such an item was made just for this reason. Thankfully ours never got that far.

He has done this off and on for quite sometime, that is why after the last episode I talked with doctor. I was really hoping to get some sort of direction other than kids do this. Do you have any idea where to find the lip balm?

My neighbor would put vaseline on her son after he had fallen asleep at night.

I'd try something at night after he falls asleep. Maybe try to ask a pharmacist what they'd reccomend - sometimes they have stuff behind the counter. If you are really worried about scars, you can try Mederma for Kid. I'd probably not put anything on during the day, it might make him lick it more?

My DD got chapped lips and the irritation caused her too keep licking or rubbing them...making it worse and worse. I got her the chapstick with SPF 15. The first day or 2 I would apply it for her many times a day, then I gave it to her and she would put it on whenever she even noticed her lips.

It cleared up pretty fast and we always keep the chapstick handy as it seems if you can prevent the initial irritation they won't keep licking it.

My pediatrician recommended that I Try Neosporin LT (Lip Treatment) on my DD. Its not so bad to where your son will fight you to put it on, but hopefully bad enough not to want to lick it. I had a hard time finding it at the drug store, but I was just looking in the wrong section.

Hello! I think kids do things like this out of habit sometimes. They don't even realize they are doing it. We use Aquaphorhealing ointment, l kind in a small chapstick like tube. It has the consistancy of vaseline but thicker. My s/o is a pharmacist & highly recommended this for horribly chapped lips & irritated area under the nose from a runny nose.

Thank you all so much for your help. My husband and I just didn't know what else to do, he is going to be 9 in September and it is just getting harder to trick him into not doing it. I will look into getting something for him to keep on him so he can use it, and at night I think I will try the vaseline. Thanks AGain to everyone

My youngest daughter will do this. We use Neosporin Lip Treatment. She does not like the taste, so besides healing it is stopping her from licking her lips.

My DS11, almost 12, used to lick his lips ALOT! And his lips, as well as the skin all around his lips would get really chapped. First I gave him many Avon Moisture Therapy lip balms to put in his coat, backpack, desk, etc. My kids and I are obsessed with Avon Moisture Therapy lip balms--we use them all the time. But secondly, at night after DS fell asleep, I would (I know it sounds gross, but it works) slather a thick coat of Vaseline petroleum jelly on his lip area. He generally has pretty dry skin in the winter, so I would put it on his cheeks and knuckles as well. This winter is the first year that his lip area has not gotten really chapped, but he still uses the lip balm, and I have not had to resort to the glob of Vaseline after he falls asleep. I think that maybe he is not licking his lips so much? I feel that kids tend to outgrow this habit.
