Ot kobo or kindle?

I got my kobo the first day they came out back in the spring. My first one didn't work so I returned it to Chapters and I had no problems changing it. My second kobo is now not working properly. I'm still waiting to have the issue resolved. I think you will find their level 1 support very helpful but if they can't help fix the problem you're in trouble. Level 2 support is not that helpful and it is near impossible to contact them. I'm now waiting for the 2nd generation ipad to come out as I need a back-lit device.

Appreciate your comments. Hopefully our experience will be better. DH ran out yesterday and got the new one and so far is happy;). The new one is supposed to be quite a bit better than the old edition. The 100 free classic novels it comes with is a big bonus for us.
I'm still looking over his shoulder as I'm waiting for my airmiles gift cards to come so I can purchase it with those. At least I'll be out very little cash if I end up unhappy with it.

BUT it is not backlit and I find these 42 year old eyes cannot read it the same as regular text. Dont know why but it is just different enough to make it a strain. Also, I find the slight hesitation when you turn a page annoying, it is a nano-second too long!!!

Actually the ease of resizing fonts is one of my favorite features of the Kobo. DW likes lights out before me, so I turn on a fairly dim bedside lamp and bump the font size up a couple of notches. Can still read easily without disturbing her, and without a backlight.

My eyes are older than yours and very poor; coke bottle bottoms aren't strong enough for me.

Well, I guess I am the spoil sport here. I won a sony e-reader in the summer from a radio station contest. I was thrilled at first but after I downloaded a few books I find I really dont like it as much as a regular book. dont get me wrong, I totally get the ease of travel idea and being able to download whenever rather than running out of books to read (I read alot) BUT it is not backlit and I find these 42 year old eyes cannot read it the same as regular text. Dont know why but it is just different enough to make it a strain. Also, I find the slight hesitation when you turn a page annoying, it is a nano-second too long!!!I know, you are all probably shaking your heads thinking picky, picky but this is my experience and I thought I would add it for the original poster. Right now, I have shoved the ereader in a drawer and not sure when I will take it out again...

I bump the font size up and it works great for these 50 year old eyes. I tried reading on a back lit reader and found that the strain was much greater than with the non backlit.

On the topic of readers, I really like the Kindle (software), andcurrently I use the Kindle reader on both my iTouch and Blackberry (BB). Soon I hope to have the iPad with it (coming soon!). The knock out feature for me is something called Whisper Sync. If I read on one device, say on my BB while waiting for the bus, then later pick up my iPad or iTouch at home (or Kindle device if I had one), all the devices will be on the last page I read. Very cool.

I'm so glad I saw this thread! Now I've decided I need a Kobo:rotfl2:.
It looks like the new, improved one is supposed to start shipping anytime in October (doesn't sound like anyone has it yet). It looks to be on par with the nook.
So, now I've ordered $150.00 of Chapters/Indigo gift cards from Airmiles to pay for it and by the time they get here hopefully my Kobo will be in the stores:thumbsup2.

DH preordered mine for my birthday and I got it yesterday:lovestruc It came with the usual 100 classics and two free downloads off the top 50 book list.
It was easy to get it up and running and have been reading on it already. I like the new WiFi version, but do wish it had a light.

I got my $150 in Chapters/Indigo gift cards from Airmiles yesterday- Boy that was fast:thumbsup2 . So of course I ran out last night and bought my Lilac Kobo. I guess I'll be reading all weekend:)

jealous....cant wait for my chapters cards to arrive...How long did yours take! Are you loving your ereader?

I ordered my cards on October 10 and they arrived on the 21st. I thought that was pretty good turnaround time as it was Thanksgiving weekend and they likely didn't get processed until the 12th!

I'm "trying" to love my Kobo, BUT I was determined to download a library book today. It downloaded alright (you need adobe digital editions downloaded too) but I transferred it to my Kobo and it says it is Locked. I searched forums, adobe site etc, to fix the problem and can't get it to unlock. I've made sure my Kobo is "authorized" with my adobe ID. I've wasted too much time today trying to fix it. Does anyone here know what to do?

I think I'll take a break and read one of the classic books already loaded on it. Can't read Pride and Prejudice too many times right?;)

Ok, NOW I love my Kobo:thumbsup2. I figured out how to get my library book onto it and of course it was unbelievably simple. (just not exactly as described in all the the instructions I had read:confused3)

Wow....that is great to hear...i am hoping my chapters cards arrive tomorrow...i ordered mine 3 days after you! Sadly for me, the closest chapters is an hour away, so i may just order one online...I am glad to hear you figured out the library books, that is a feature i am very much looking forward to...I just may have to ask for your help...:lmao:

I'm so glad I started this thread and that everyone's enjoying their kobos, or other ereaders. I'm going to get one, but it's on my Christmas list. We have such a hard time buying gifts for each other at our age that we need to choose things we really want.

My DH thinks I should wait for better and newer technology, but I think if I pay only $149 for the kobo then I won't mind upgrading in a couple of years. Who knows where this technology will go, but I want to enjoy an ereader now! Last year I got a DSi and then of course they came out with a DSXL.....oh well. I use my DSi every day and love word games.

How long did it take to arrive after ordered, or do they have the new ones in the store? I'm excited to get one, but happy to have it waiting for me under the Christmas tree. I'll have lots of time to learn how to use it before our March trip to Florida.

Thanks everyone for joining in.

Nora

I ordered a new Kobo late last week, waiting for delivery.

The one thing that concerns me is that you apparently have to charge the battery by connecting the e-reader to your computer. I was hoping to take the Kobo on vacation with me, saving valuable packing space in my luggage by cutting down on the reading material I usually have--I definitely don't want to travel with my laptop!

So--how long does the Kobo battery really last?

I bought my Kobo in the store, so I don't know how long it takes if you order. One thing to know though, if you collect Airmiles, or Aeroplan miles you can order Kobo through their e stores (portal to Chapters/ Indigo) and get miles. I wanted to do this as I collect miles obsessively, but I just couldn't wait!

The Kobo is supposed to stay charged for 10 days ot 10000 page turns. Mine is still charged, and I charged it on Friday, so I think it would be ok on a trip.

They also have them at Coles if that is easier for you. If you go to the Chapters/Indigo site and go through as if you're ordering one they have an option to check stock in stores and Coles will come up.:)

Don't worry, you do not need your laptop to charge the kobo. Best Buy sells a USB adapter so all you need to do is connect one end of the kobo charging cord into the kobo and the USB end into the adapter and plug the adapter into an outlet. I've done this and it works.

Got my chapters cards yesterday, from airmiles, and went and bought my kobo...only cost me 16 dollars :cool1:...So far, i am loving it!!! Definately a great purchase and can only imagine how great it will be on a trip...

Good for you! I'm now realizing I need to buy a nice cover for it so I can carry it in my purse. More shopping;)

I was in Chapters the other day and saw a display of Kobo's but really had no idea what they were. I kinda knew that you read books on a Kindle but when I saw this thread I just thought I'd have a look and see what these things were all about. Well, now my Christmas list is up and it contains a Kobo! Thanks guys :)

Got the Kobo I ordered. It is up and running in good order. I also bought a gelskin to protect the Kobo, and a Roots leather sleeve for it. The gelskin was easy to apply, even for someone as clumsy as I. The Roots sleeve fits well.

Today I downloaded the Frommer's 2010 guide to Disney World! Yeah!!!! It cost about 60% less than the hard copy edition of the book.

I will definitely check into the USB adapter at Best Buy!
