Hi,

Has anyone been to Kings Dominion in VA lately? Is it worth it? Fun things for little kids? I'm not really interested in roller coasters or adult rides. Thanks!

We went last year the Sunday after the 4th of July. My DD was 7 and able to ride almost all of the rides. She had a great time. My DD was 3 and wasn't able to do that much. There is a section that is devoted to smaller children. He does not want to go back until he is bigger.

We did not go to the waterpark part of the park. My kiddos were ok with that. In June we went to Sesame Place, Hershey Park, Busch Gardens, and Water Country. Personally, I was over amusement parks; however, my kiddos love them.

Thanks for the info. My girls love amusement parks, too! I took them to the zoo yesterday and my oldest kept asking where the rides were. Which park did you like best for your 3 year old? My oldest is almost 4, and so I thought with Dora, she might like Kings Dominion, but if she can't ride a lot, she won't be happy.

We just got back from Busch Gardens. My DD is 7, and we had a great time. There is a huge section of "kiddie" rides, that would be great for a 3 yo. My 7 yo even enjoyed some of them. They also had some shows that a 3 yo might enjoy, like an animal show. Never been to Kings Dominion before, so can't help you there! :)

for the 3-5 yr old crowd, KD has a kiddie area with little roller coaster (mild and Moms can go on it too), and about 7 kiddie rides--airplanes, cars, etc. There is also a new scooby doo ride that is like Buzz at WDW MK--you shoot little lasers---your kids can try to shoot or just ride around (car seats 4)--it's pretty fun. Also, there are 2-3 shows a day where kids dress up and act out stuff. There is a Dora live show in a covered arena. They can ride in the old fashioned cars-you have to drive. Carousel, too. Also included in your ticket is the waterpark which has really good little kids areas. I suggest getting a day ticket (cheaper online) and then if you loved it, trade it in before you leave KD at guest services for a season pass--which is only about $65 or so.
Now BG---we like it better than KD--more shade and more really nice shows--but most would not interest 3-5 yr olds. For younger kids, KD actually has a better area and it is not nearly as crowded as BG kids area. So, if you are close to KD, go there and if you are closer to BG, go there--at BG, for VA residents, one day is the same as a season pass. BG does not have a waterpark--it costs extra---b/c it is included at KD, I would probably lean towards KD. We alternate every other year at one or the other.

We live in Norfolk and have passes to BG and Water Country. Water Country is my DS 4 favorite park, then BG. Last year I think he would have enjoyed Kings Dominion more if we hadn't just been to Sesame Place and Hershey Park. At Sesame Place, everything is designed for his age/size. This was perfect for us last year. DD was 7 at the time and still enjoyed herself; however, the trip was for DS who was 3 at the time.

Then, we went to Hershey Park for DD. This park allowed me to take DD on big rides, while my mom took DS on rides that he could go on. Busch Gardens is set up this way somewhat.

The problem we encountered at Kings Dominion was that most of the rides are in one part of the park, and DD and others wanted to ride things all over the park. If we could have stayed just in the one part of Kings Dominion, DS would have had more fun.

Since we love amusement parks, we will be going back to Kings Dominion. We will just wait until DS can ride more of the rides. This summer you can find us at Busch Gardens and Water Country.

We live near KD and get season passes every year. There are quite a few rides for little ones. There are a lot of ride around in circle types, which my kids were fine with: boats go in circles, cars in circles, etc. There are bumper cars for kids and little jeeps that they 'drive" but really go around a wide track. A small rollercoaster (you can ride with). There is a large "construction company" with tunnels and slides and ball pits(-this always made me nervous as I couldn't always see my kids and some others were pretty aggressive), the shows are cute, there is a splash, water fun area area right at the edge of the kids section -- great for little ones and you don't have to make the hike to the water park. My kids are older and we still have to walk through the cave. :) The scooby "shoot the ghosts ride" (like buzz as pp said) is a fun family ride. There is a standard carousel. There are several rides the whole family can enjoy.

it's a fun place. it is hot in the summer and there isn't a lot of shade or air conditioned places (gift shops and a few restaurants).

There are scheduled meet and greets so chances are you could time a meeting with Dora. They also sell a lot of cute merchandise for fairly reasonable prices with the characters that you can't find elsewhere.

Unsure of your timing, but at the fourth of July they do fireworks for three consecutive nights. it is a nice show.

I don't like that there are so many carnival games and the kids who run them are on microphones asking people to play --it gets obnoxious. JMHO.

Although you didn't ask, KD is much cleaner than it was in the past. It was purchased by Cedar Fair Parks and they have cleaned it up a lot. (It still isn't Disney clean, but it is much improved).

They also have formed partnerships with some food franchises: Starbucks, Cinnabon, chick-fil-a and subway (subway has been in place for a while).

I do think it is worth a visit :thumbsup2

Feel free to PM me and I will try to answer any other questions you may have.

Thanks for all the replies. I think we'll try it tomorrow to see how we like it. I found a good code online for discount tickets. I'll report back in case anyone's interested.

Just for anyone who was thinking about KD, we went yesterday and had a fantastic time. I only have little ones, 3 years and 1 year, so we focused all of our attention on them and kiddie land. The kiddie land was empty and we could ride anything without too much of a wait. There was some wait for rides that the whole family could ride or that bigger kids could ride. The Dora show was cute and my girls loved the water park. We spent 4 hours there alone doing the kiddie beach, the big wave pool, and the lazy river. If you have older kids it might not be as fun, because the water slides were CROWDED as well as roller coaster lines. Plus they are not as efficient as Disney on getting people on and off the rides, so it takes longer. We are glad we went and thanks to all who helped!

I am glad to hear that you enjoyed yourself. My DS 4 who did not have too much fun last year, asked me tonight if he could go to KD and ride the Scooby Doo rollercoaster. I told him next year.

When we went to KD in 2005, it seemed like it attracted a lot of riff-raff unaccompanied teens, horny teens at that. It was my son's 11th birthday party with 5 of his friends and us two moms as chaperones. Everywhere I turned around there were teenagers groping in the shadows or swearing. I haven't been back since, it reminded me of Six Flags Astro Land in Houston.

We did buy season passes to Busch Gardens just 40 miles down the road in Williamsburg. It's the best Disney substitute I've found. Lovely park with lots of kiddie rides, many mixed into each "land" with the bigger rides, plus a treehouse rope climbing slide lollapolooza adventure for the little ones. Best money we spent this summer.

Were it me, I'd choose Busch Gardens over King's Dominion anyday.

Princessroo --glad you had a good time!:goodvibes

Littleroo-I will agree there are a lot of teens that need, let's say...umm...some supervision (although, not so much in the kiddie land). That remains. But, in 2006 when KD was bought out, it was cleaned up a good bit and moreso this year. It was so dirty for a while and seemed like it needed a good scrubbing. It is so much better now.
We enjoy Busch Gardens, but don't go often as KD is closer and some of the family likes the really intense coasters. If someone is coming from the North for a day trip, KD is fine, IMO, while BG will take you another 1 to 1 1/2 hours to get there. Add to to it that the water park and amusement park are on the same ticket, makes it a good deal. But, sorry your son had to be exposed to so much over the top PDA -- I know they don't now, but could security have a policy to break up that sort of thing? Just curious. I also hate the cursing.

If I'm not mistaken, BG Williamsburg has often been named as one of the most beautiful parks for several years. It has a much different feel than KD for sure. If we lived closer to BG than KD, we'd go there more often.

I was there same day... we have season passes to KD since moving from Norfolk to Richmond. This was the first day since childhood that I've spent pretty much a whole day in this park.. we used our disney philosophy for tackling the park and noticed almost no crowds until 2:00 when we went to the waterpark... it was just myself and a girlfriend so we just did the adult rides, then the lazy river and wave pool... everything else in the WP was too crowded, just like you said. I have a problem with KD in comparing it to Bush Gardens and Disney.. this park just isn't that great when compared... sure it's got roller coasters galore and the Nickeloden side for kids, but there's no theming or "story" to the different areas..I miss when paramount owned it and everything at least had a purpose (the Hurler coaster was in a Waynes World "land" and had the WW theme ect). the workers aren't friendly at all and in general the crowd there isn't really very great (when you have to have secruity guards stationed throughout the lines that kinda worries me) Anyway.. wonder if we bumped into each other in the lazy river :) Glad to hear you guys had a good time.... you should take the hour drive and go down to Bush Gardens... that park always makes Disney feel closer to me

Sailors wife- I definitely agree when comparing it to Disney. We try not to compare anything to Disney. But for a day trip it was worth it since my husband noted that we all got in for the price of one person for one day at Disney :) I'm sure BG is prettier as well, because all of Willamsburg is gorgeous. I don't think KD would have been as great without the water park, either. My girls loved playing in the water. I miss the theming of Paramount, too. I was excited to go to Yogi's cave and now the cave has nothing in it besides a treasure chest. No bears, no fun music, nothing. It was a little sad remembering it from my childhood days.

If you know someone with a Platinum Season's Pass they can bring a friend for $25 off per ticket. We have season's passes and have been twice already this year and our kids are 12, 10, 5, and 3. We usually split up I take the younger ones and my DH takes the older two, then we meet up for lunch/dinner. It works for our family since I don't ride the rides.
