My ds is really considering the ipod nano 2gb. It says it holds up to 500 songs. Once you have reached the 500 songs, are you able to delete old songs to put on new ones. Also is there anyplace selling them cheaper than the $200.

Yes you can change out songs - and you might want to consider paying a little more to double the memory. Full price it's only $50 more to get 4 gig instead of 2.

Is DS a student? Or do you know any students or educators that you could give them the $$$ to buy the iPod? Apple has a discount for students and educators. Just go into any Apple store and show ID. You can also order online and get the discount. I just looked up the nano last night and forget already how much it saved, LOL. Sorry. I've heard on deal boards that you can order online and just *say* you're a student at a certain school/university and they don't check - but that's up to you if you want to risk it. You can go to AppleStore and click on the link for the education store and you can look up the price of the nanos.

Right now, since the Nano is new, you're not going to find one too discounted yet (at least not legit or something that's not stolen) if discounted at all, except for that education discount.

Here's a link to the Apple Store for Education so you can check out prices:

2GB model is $179, 4GB is $229. Free shipping and engraving. Tax added if you are in a state that has a bricks-and-mortar Apple Store.

When I was going to buy my IPod at Best Buy the saleperson was very helpful and pointed out a flaw that I hadn't considered. It actually made me rethink my decsion.

The rechargeable batteries in the IPod are not reachable by the user. So when they completely die (and rechargeables do die eventually) they cannot be replaced. Apparently the batteries last for about a year and a half. Apple will replace them for you for $99US if you send them the system. Also becasue of this problem there are independant companies making solutions (they run between $79 & $99CDN). Apple apparently has a lawsuit filed against them about this so you should be able to research it further on the web.

I ended up getting a 256Mb MP3 player by SanDisk that runs on AAA batteries. It is small and there are larger ones but I figured that I could see how much I use it.

That whole battery debate with the Ipod is so old. I've had Ipods in our house for over a year and nothing has happened to it. That was more of the problem with the first few generations of Ipods, but it seems to have been corrected with more recent ones.

Of course I have bought the extended warranty (on a discount of course), so that helps with any issues or problems.

If your have a problem, and your Ipod is out of warranty, there are many many websites that show you how to fix your Ipod battery. I've seen the steps, it doesn't look too hard.

Cindy is right: the Ipod battery issue is for the old 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation. They don't even sell any of these anymore. The nanos are fine.

DH has an ipod from back when they first came out...2000, 2001...I forget, but its a first generation one. We use it constantly, and have only recently noticed the battery showing any signs of wear. When it does finally die (DH is not so secretly hoping is before christmas this year, but thinks he can get another year out of it at least), we'll just replace it with a new one.

actually, it's not true that the battery replacement costs 99$ dollars. ever since the lawsuit that apple faced for the poor rechargeables in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation ipods they had to lower the price of the battery replacement to 59$. apple ipod battery replacement program

this might also be useful for those of you with ipods. it's very important to know these things in order to keep your battery living for a long time. i've used these suggestions and the battery on my 2nd generation ipod has just started failing (it's over 4 years old now).

Let me ask for some details on this. I would be buying this for a "student", my dd13 who is a 7th grade student. I believe they actually mean college student though. I did follow the link and look around and it looks like you could just choose your school and go for it. I would like to save the $20(who wouldn't?) but I don't want to be dishonest. Do they do any kind of verification? Would they mail some form to the school? How exactly does it work? Have any of you done this?

You don't need to be a college student . You can be a K-12 student. Put in your zip code. With any luck, you will have tons of schools come up for your zip. In my zip alone, there are four elementary, and a few paroichial schools.

I also work for a school district. I have a school ID (I'm a substitute teacher) and pay stubs that say School District of ...... I go into the Apple store and use these for an educator discount as well as a copy of my license.

I've never ordered online, but they did require these paper items on an actual in store purchase. Years ago, many years ago, you did have to fax a form to Apple, but this was pre internet. I always buy my items in store, so I don't know how they verify online.

University bookstores which are sellers of Apple will sell the ipod at educator prices. Check with a nearby college or university.

Do yourself a favour and hold off on the Nano for a few weeks. Apple is possibly about to do a re-call of all Nanos due to a small defect. Or a solution will be offered.

Basically they scratch very easily. Normal everyday wear and tear can make your Nano look months old in a matter of days, due to this it makes the screen almost unreadable.

My boyfriend bought the Nano and loves it, minus the fact its a week old and looks like its had a hard life.

In regards to the battery life ... its fixed, get over it.
