Oscar Thread

I just got over here to the Oscar thread this morning. Some random responses and comments:

....

On the Oscar pre-show, they mentioned that Kate Winslet has the most nominations ever at her young age. (Five noms and she's only 31.) I sure hope she doesn't end up like Peter O'Toole! I'm sure she'll win one soon.

I hope so, but the Academy Award nominations and subsequent buzz tend to either love its "new hotness" stories--like Jennifer Hudson, for instance--as a way, I think, to increase viewer interest in the Oscars and hopefully ratings. Or they promote folks who've had long careers, like Mirren. The people in between, especially if they're known for always turning in solid performances, tend to fall between the cracks. These factors tend to influence the voting, by most accounts in the industry.

Because of her age Winslet is, I think, one of those actresses who falls in between and might be recognized by nomimations without actually winning an Oscar for a good deal longer. I hope I'm wrong, but it's happened to Meryl Streep, who's only won for Kramer Vs. Kramer (in a supporting role!). We just expect Streep to do good work regardless, as we do Mirren, Dench, and Winslet. That's why I suspect Winslet will need to put in a few more years before the Academy "remembers" to recognize her.....

And yes, I just compared Winslet to Streep et. al. She's that good.

Yes, yes she is. ::yes::

Very few can pull off everything like those two can. Winslet has been awesome I a few roles she didn't get nominated for as well.

Actually, Meryl did win Best actress for Sophie's Choice. :thumbsup2 Since then, she's been the most nominated actress in history for the Oscar - or as she says, the one who's lost the most times, and had to put on that "Oh, I'm so glad she won instead," face. :p

I agree, if anyone knows where a link to a vid of the "In Memoriam" segment they do is, please post it here.

They are always moving and tastefully done.

I've thought for a long time we need a trophy smilie. We need to tell the Webmasters to please include this smilie.

OK, I was taping and of course did NOT extend the time so I missed my favorite "In Memoriam (clip)".
Did they include Steve Irwin?

As far as I know, Steve never did a film. He will be included in the Emmy's "In Memoriam (clip)" for his TV work.

Oh, and didn't the Oscar's have a 3 hour delay on the West Coast? Why didn't the West Coast DISers start their own commentary thread while the Oscars were running there? :scratchin

Ok, I'm fine with the Oscar for Inconvenient Truth as a documentary, but how did the song win?? Any one of the three Dreamgirls songs was better. I like Melissa, but it really wasn't even one of her best songs.
Three songs from one movie would tend to split the vote by people supporting that movie. I am not surprised that the Inconvenient Truth won here given the split.

Ooops, that's what happens when I rely on my memory! How could I forget Sophie's Choice--it's not like the film was before my time! :rotfl:

Does anybody have a link to Forrestt Whitaker's acceptance speech?

TIA.

He did 1 movie, however not really a "quality" movie really.
I will have to look for the Memoriam at the Emmy's.:thumbsup2

Well, one year, they were reading off the nominees, and when they said her name, I thought, "Did she even make a movie this year? Do they simply automatically include her every year now?" :rotfl: I think it was for the film, Music of the Heart.

Yeah, she's one of the Hollywood royalty, the contemporary Katherine Hepburn and our version of the grand dames Mirren, Dench, and Smith--and let's not forget Andrews!

But it wouldn't be an Oscars night without some actor or director who's been overlooked (Streep and O'Toole), the retroactive awards (Scorcese), and the mad antics of Jack; what does he DO to deserve his choice spot at the awards, anyway?

did she get a nom for Eternal Sunshine?? I thought she was awesome in that.

West Coast here! No, the oscars is not on a three hours delay. We see it real time (the same time you did). For us it's great because we don't have to stay up to oh-dark-hundred to watch the entire thing (Barbara Wah-Wah comes on after the awards, not before).

I wasn't contributing because we were at an oscar party (a tradition our best friend started 20 years ago). Just a small group but I won the pool again this year. Lots of upsets this year and a few disappointments. My own observations:

* Ellen was good. Appropriately starstruck but still joked with the big stars like they were real people (which we forget they are). Personally, I would like to see a host rotation of Ellen, Jon Stewart & Billy Crystal.

* Pilobolus (sp?) was fantastic. Short and sweet transitions and really amazing.

* We (or at least some of us) knew ahead of time that it would be Martin and Jennifer's night. I do feel badly for Peter O'Toole as the academy typically hands out an "old trout" award to a performer who's been nominated repeatedly and deserved a win for a different performance but gets it for this one (I would say this is true of Martin Scorcese as The Departed was good but not his best work by any stretch). But Forest Whitaker's transformation into Idi Amin was amazing. Just like Helen Mirren...at some point you forget you're watching a movie and think you're watching a documentary about the real people.

* Melissa Ethridge. Hey, she was able to rhyme Inconvenient Truth (what was it...something youth?). I think this was a case where the three Dreamgirls songs cancelled each other out and Randy Newman has gotten the nod over the past few years (and how much can you stand to listen to the same basic melody with different words over and over and over...he really is the Allen & Marilyn Bergman of the last decade). Besides the academy will often recognize a popular commercial artist who has made a film contribution (perhaps with the idea to get more commercial artists to do film work...i don't know).

* Jack's head. :scared1: But after I got used to it, I thought it was sort of hot (in a Telly Savalas, Yul Brenner kind of way). I think he's been balding for a long time...good to see he's finally gotten rid of the toupe (although I'm not sure if the shaved thing is for a movie role).

* Memorial. I especially liked the image of the burning film with the stars images on it. Poignant. I wish this wouldn't have been at the very end though.

* As for fashion, in my opinion, it's gotten just a little too safe. Although it was ironic that Meryl was nominated for a fashion film and then shows up in a black schmata and clunky jewelry. I'm pretty much agreed with everyone else that it was a good thing Jennifer took off the Jetson's jacket. and personally, I hated that huge bow on nicole's shoulder. And what was up with Philip Seymour Hoffman's hair??

At the show is still just too f***ing long!!! The academy doesn't need to justify the role of films in society. Why do we need to see five film clip montages over the course of the evening ([Choose your topic] as seen in the movies)? Show me more longer clips from the nominated films (have those gotten shorter?) and cut out the rest. I liked what they did for the screenplay noms (reciting an excerpt from each) and the fashion noms (having models posed in the costumes). Just cut out the fluff that has nothing to do with the awards that year.

And here's a question: Jodie Foster introduced this segment, and she mentioned that she lost her "best friend" 2 weeks ago. She mentioned the name, but I didn't catch it and didn't recognize it. Does anyone know who she mentioned?

I agree completely. I think she is a phenominal actress and I can't believe she hasn't won yet.
