Orlando's Sanford Airport to bring in private security

I had not heard this until now - I know this has been discussed as a possibility open to individual airports in some of the AIT scan threads. It sounds like even though they'll comply with TSA regulations and eventually have the same scanners, use of a private firm will allow them to change the pat-down procedures. At least that's how the commentary explains it, though I'm not clear why that is possible.

There are already airports that use private security at the checkpoints. SFO is one. They are required to comply with TSA procedures. Based on my limited experiences at SFO, plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

My understanding is private security must follow the same, or substantially the same, procedures as the TSA. My understanding is some airports think they can either save money or handle staffing in way that results in shorter lines.

To add to pp's list (ITA)

- some airports have a very poor relationship with the TSA on site. Particularly with how TSA deals with airport/airline employees with badges authorizing them to bypass screenings. Like the SWA employee who rotates from checkin to baggage handling to being at the boarding gate.
