Orange Juice on DCL - only from concentrate, not squeezed?

WoW! I can't remember the last time I had fresh squeezed OJ or lemonade for that matter.

I am just having a hard job picturing that? Where are you from that they have fresh orange juice? Or do you do it yourself? Maybe I will try it for a treat. Here in Ohio we just have fresh milk from a cow - yuck.

Is this serious, that you don't get fresh orange juice in Ohio? Or maybe I'm missing some regional joke because I'm not from the US?

It's just I buy fresh squeezed orange juice at the supermarket near my home, here in the UK. In fact, I go to a particular supermarket to buy 'Florida's Natural' which is imported from Florida because I love the taste. But 'Tropicana' is available in every supermarket and is also fresh squeezed, not from concentrate.

Anyway, for the record, I think the OJ on DCL is dreadful. Always seems watered down to me. Seems crazy that I can get really good OJ in my local supermarket, thousands of miles from Florida on the other side of the Atlantic, but the stuff on the ship whose home port is Florida is nowhere near as nice.

I think it is a language thing. I call the Nature's Best--not from concentrate; the rest from concentrate.

I call fresh squeezed, juice that was just a few minutes ago in the orange--so the restaurant squeezes it, not the company.

What an unusual thread this is.

I think you nailed it. However, even the "not from concentrate" is pasturized, and some find the heat changes the flavor. We had a ton of oranges on our tree this year, so I'm a little "fresh squeezed" out still.

As for the food , remember, the same crew that cooked on the Magic in the Caribbean is cooking in the Med, only the food source is different. Not saying that's bad, just different.
Even here in the U.S. we have regional differences. I love a good Pork Steak when I am in the mid-west, but the butchers here in Californnia don't even know what cut of meat that is.
Or, do you drink soda, pop, sodie pop, a soft drink or coke?

You got it :)

For me fresh squeezed means right from fresh oranges with all the orange bits in it. I've turned that down at restaruants and the server'd look at me funny. But for me I want a liquid beverage, not a shredded orange. As you put it not from concentrate, or even if it is a cartoned juice labeled as from concentrate I've not had an issue, the type where it does settle out as described earlier, which must be from those frozen things you can buy at the store? Don't think I'd like that either.

And on the food, that is exactly what I was trying to get at, I think they were unprepared for the differences from what they have always gotten from Port Canavaral.

:lmao: I'm originally from MN and we "Have a Coke" which can translate to coffee, tea, soda of any kind.

:rotfl: I have lived in Ohio my entire 37 years of life, and I assure you that I've had access to it...even in the little hometown I grew up in. Perhaps where she lives, it's just not common.

Of course we have OJ that is from concentrate and OJ that is not from concentrate in the grocery store. However, there is not a choice for FRESH Squeezed. I got this from Florida's Natural website--

Not-from-concentrate juices have that right-from-the-grove, fresh-squeezed taste. And, just like fresh-squeezed juice, there’s no water, sugar, or preservatives added, only 100 percent pure premium quality pasteurized orange juice. One sip, and you’ll taste the difference it makes.

What is the difference between a from concentrate and not-from-concentrate product?

The difference is in how the fruit is processed. A not-from-concentrate product means the fruit is squeezed, the juice is pasteurized and then packaged. A from concentrate product means the fruit is squeezed, the water is extracted, which produces a concentrated form similar to that you see in the frozen food department, then at a later time the water is added back and the juice is pasteurized and packaged.

The word fresh means not altered by processing. --I don't consider OJ in a jug/carton from the grocery store as fresh. I thought the OP was asking DCL to prepare freshly squeezed OJ for him - straight from the orange. Not provide not from concentrat OJ.
For an example, I can go to a farm here and get fresh milk, straight from the cow. I can also go to a orchard and get fresh apple butter or apple cidar. However, we do not have anywhere with 'FRESH' squeezed OJ.

I am asking one of two things:

i) for DCL to freshly squeeze oranges

OR

ii) for DCL to purchase plastic cartons of squeezed orange juice (eg Tropicana or Minute Maid).

In the second scenario, the OJ may or may not have pulp in it., depending on the individual's preference.

Am I guessing correctly that you really mean you want:
i) Disney to serve orange juice squeeze from oranges on the ship
OR
ii) Disney to purchase orange juice that is NOT made from orange juice concentrate

I think Disney uses Minute Maid concentrate (made by Coke) when they cruise out of Orlando.

Good idea - am writing a letter to Disney at present pointing out about the food problems we experienced and will add about the juice also. It left a sludge in the bottom of the glass which was not good.

Would just like to clarify once again it was not the food or quality of food we had problems with (husband eats meat I do not) but the fact it was served dry and the vegetables uncooked and cold. Perhaps you were on late dining we were on early and that has made the difference but the lack of gravy or any sauce with the meal and rice dishes was not down to availability of produce.

You are correct.

Wow- I never realized what a debate some OJ could cause. A bit of irony, I'm from California, and last time I was in Florida, I walked into a SuperTarget, and saw some oranges. I said to my girlfriend, "look babe, Lets get some Florida oranges, to see if they taste different than ours"....well as we approached the display, every single orange had a sticker that read "California Grown"- needless to say we didn't buy any, but oh well just thought it was funny they had California oranges in Florida.:confused3

This reminds me of a story from my husband. He lived in a small town in NC near his grandparents; his grandparents went to Hawaii and brought him back a T-shirt as a souvenier--it had been made in their home town!

I am surprised that more DCL customers have not complained of receiving orange juice from concentrate - I would guess that its sales would lag those behind prepackaged squeezed orange juice in North American supermarkets.

According to the University of Florida, sales of NFC (NOT FROM CONCENTRATE) Orange Juice have doubled in the past 10 years to 32.7% of all sales.
So, you shouldn't be surprised since 67.3 % of all the Orange Juice sold in the US is from concentrate, a preference of two to one.
I think the posts talking about wanting pulp free orange juice are a clue to that. The sign of a good fresh squeezed orange juice is huge chunks of pulp.

Sort of like butter versus margarine. It USED to be illegal in some states for restaurants to serve anything but butter. But sooooo many folks now have grown up with margarine, they actually prefer it to butter.

another little FYI:

with concentrate you also do not know how much actual juice you are getting: "100% juice from concentrate" does not mean 100% of what is on that carton is juice, it only means 100% of that product came from a concentrate...it could actually be a very small amount of real juice

with "100% juice NOT from concentrate" you get just that - 100% juice.

also - with Tropicana you get to pick the level of pulp: from lots, to little, or none!:thumbsup2

I think this is may be why juice is linked to obesity in kids - so much of it has added sugars - I believe in most cases you may as well give a kid a soda as give them juice from concentrate....we only buy not from concentrate!:)

I am with the OP - I would love to see fresh squeezed - I am pretty sure that is what we had on Royal Caribbean (years agao though - may have changed). I thought there was a push to healthier food at Disney - or was it only lower fat??? Fresh squeezed - or at least not from concentrate - would be a good step!!!

No, by law, if it says Orange Juice, even if from concentrate, it has to be 100 % juice. They have just re-added the water they took out. Now if it is Orange Drink, it may have little, or no juice in it. But if it is Orange Juice, it is 100% juice.

interesting - Thank You!:thumbsup2 :)

so I am confusing "100% juice from concentrate" with "drinks" like juice boxes. That is good to know - I had thought the two were no different! (don't know where I read all that other stuff.....sigh!) Again, thank you!

You have to read labels for sure. When you go to the grocery store you basically had 3 choices......fresh squeezed OJ, OJ not made from concentrate, and the vast majority, OJ reconstituted from concentrate.
You can get juice box individual servings of OJ that is 100% juice.
The OP was asking about whether they offed OJ squeezed on the ship. They did have that available at Topsiders on our cruise, but the OJ in the dining room, and from the fountain the OJ was from concentrate.
I love OJ, and I'm fine with fresh, not from concentrate , or from concentrate OJ. I really don't care for OJ that they sell in little cans and big cans that doesn't need refrigeration. Just doesn't taste as good.
