I'm having oral surgery with IV sedation tomorrow. I am a HUGE baby when it comes to my teeth. I got a crown done 6 weeks after I'd had a c-section and I'd go through the c-section any day before the dental work.

I'll supposedly be in "la la land" when it's done and not remember anything. I have this fear that I'll be totally aware of it when it's going on and then just be given something afterwards to make me forget.

If you've had oral surgery with IV sedation, please tell me I'll be okay. DH has had it twice and says it's nothing, but he actually ENJOYS having his teeth cleaned, so I don't trust him.

Been there done that. DD's been there and done that too. You'll be absolutely fine. Won't remember a thing.:D

You will be fine!
That is how I had my wisdom teeth removed. Although I was slightly (and I mean slightly) aware of what was going on, I felt no pain or discomfort. They gave me a discman to listen to during the procedure as well. When they woke me up after they were done I couldn't believe it as it felt like they had just started!

I had my 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed while under IV sedation.

My oral surgeon had me bring headphones...she put the needle in, I put my headphones on, next thing I knew, they were waking me up - it was all over.

I dont' want to scare you about this - but I do have to say it. I did "wake up" at one point during my surgery. I remember opening my eyes and seeing my oral surgeon straddeling me and I heard this ungodly noise I won't even describe to you. however I couldn't feel a damn thing and closed my eyes and was out again. At least - I THINK I did all this...they never mentioned me waking up - but I have a very vivid picture of her straddling me. hehehe. It might have been a dream - not really sure.

I was in ZERO PAIN during the surgery...it wasn't until all that medication wore off that I started to feel pain in my mouth.

you will be fine...you will be in la-la land.

best of luck to you - don't be nervous. :)

you'll be fine! i just had oral surgery in september and it was just like poohnpglet said: you are slightly aware of what's going on, you feel no pain, and time flies. :)

I did it. I was not aware of anything. I don't even remember walking from the OR to the recovery area.

I don't want to be even slightly aware. I hate the sights, the sounds, the smells of it all.

missypie,

What I was slightly aware of was the music in my headphones and that I was lying down. That was about the extent of it. I HATE the dentist and if I could get them to put my under for every treatment I would!

I will keep you in my thought tomorrow, but I am sure you will be totally fine!

Ditto!::yes::

Let us know how you do, I'm sure you will do just fine! I had mine out many years ago and I'm sure they have come a long way since then. My DS 17 has to get his out soon 4 impacted, I'm more nervous for him than I would be if it were me.

YOU'LL BE FINE!!

I was petrified because I had never been unconscious before. It didn't even hurt when the nurse started my IV..they gave me nitrous through the mask to "pump up my veins" and boy, did it work! The next thing I know, I woke up in the KMart parking lot drooling while my mom was inside at the pharmacy.

It is rather ironic that you should post this question. I was going to post the same question myself. I have to have tooth removed by an oral surgeon in a couple of weeks. I am the same as you are, a total baby when it comes to going to the dentist.

I had my wisdom teeth removed under sedation last year. I know the anxiety you are feeling. I was scared to death as I had never had ANYTHING done before. I made my DH stay with me because I was so scared. I started to cry as they put in the IV. I was out almost instantly. I remember my DH rubbing my legs to calm me down and the next thing I know, the nurse is telling me its all over. I thought she was joking and then she showed me my teeth. I was amazed. I had 4 teeth removed and I was literally in and out within 20-30 minutes. The sedative made me cry a lot for awhile and I was a little loopy. Later that evening I got very sick and could not keep anything down. On the other hand, the pain pills were great!! :p

Well, I had 2 impacted wisdom teeth removed many years ago under sedation, and just last week my dentist said I need an upper wisdom tooth removed, and referred me to an oral surgeon. I have MAJOR anxiety about my teeth, and the further they go back into my mouth, the worse it gets. I have a very small mouth (physically, not vocally), and several dentists have told me this. :( I need to set up a consultation with the oral surgeon first, to decide whether to have local or general anesthesia. I think I'd rather be OUT!

In short, the surgery will be fine, no sweat. Just make sure you get good meds for the recovery, and buy some straws. ;)

I made it through, you will be fine. I am terrified of needles so I was afraid of the IV. I remember laying down, putting on the headphones, and waking up as my dad was pushing me out in a wheelchair. I didn't even remember the IV but I had the bruises to prove it was there!!! I didn't feel any pain until the next day.

NO straws I think!!

Back when I had mine done, you used a straw but nowadays I think you don't. I think the straws hinder the clotting process. (??)

Good luck, you'll be fine. I don't remember a thing. I hate having dental work done. Too expensive and too nerve wracking!

check with your oral surgeon on that one first. I wasn't allowed (well - I was told) not to use a straw for like 2 weeks after I got my wisdom teeth removed...something about the suction pulling at the holes/stitches in my mouth...so just be on the safe side and ask if it's ok to use a straw before you are go under.

Good luck again!
