Oprah - Her head has done blowed up!

Which should have been enough to show the world her true colors. No way you can't look at her diehard fans differently after that event.

I do like Oprah but I sincerely feel that she is completely out of touch with reality. She freaked a while ago about people not having bathroom linens that matched. Is that person really living less of a life because they use different colored towels from their spouse and/or kids? :confused3 Her money has given her things that many of us could never imagine having/seeing/doing. She does great works with her charity but she also recently profiled a community south of Kankakee, Illinois, and, while completely deplorable, many people in this country live in similar conditions. It's not something that's going on behind people's backs. It was a tiny town with no infrastructure, and a very poor community at that. I didn't see an Angel Network donation to sweep the town into it's own zip code with funds to staff its own police, fire, and emergency departments, so I really didn't grasp her point on this one. :sad2:

Oh - come on - there have been other Oprah-bashing threads on the DIS. Either you like her or you don't.

okay that is what I though. Despite any big headedness she had---she was thrown in front of the train when the facts of his "memoir" were discovered and it was indeed her name on the line.

As well as her fame does for people especially those book club books--she chose the book for its honesty. His "new one" she ripped was well deserved IMHO.

Had he been on national news shows--a number one best seller (maybe he was??) and doing the circuit--noone would have given the journalists grief for calling him to the table when the truth was discovered.

Oprah's Ego aside--she has just as every right to save face as anyone whose endorsement was under false pretenses.

I find it interesting that her audience appears to be some sort of "Stepford Audience" They are almost always 20-40ish women, all made up and looking perfect. Does everyone going to the show get a makeover before they are on camera?

Also, the commericals drive me nuts.

Guest: Talks for about 1 minute on issue

Oprah: Interrupts and talks about her view/herself for about 1 minute

Cut to commercial.

This is why I no longer watch.

(plus her head done blowed up real good..... :rotfl: )

I have friends who have been to the show. You call for tickets. But they are hard to get.

Vettechick, you really need to read The Smoking Gun's expose on Frey's book. I'm sorry, but he did not merely "exagerrate for dramatic effect." He lied, outright, about everything from being in prison to his "crime spree" (that was actually no more than a parking ticket :lmao: ).

Yeah, I was just going to say the same thing.

I read the Smoking Gun's expose when the whole flap first started. I couldn't believe the "embellishments" Frey made. He claimed to feel partially responsible for his closest friend getting killed in a car/train wreck. I don't fully recall his account, but it was complete bunk. Two girls from his town were killed in a such a wreck, but he wasn't even friends with them and he was nowhere near them that night. :sad2:

From what I heard, he first claimed the book was a work of fiction but no publisher wanted it. As soon as he repackaged it as a memoir, a publisher picked it up. Dramatic license is expected in a memoir--blatant lying is not.

Oh, and Oprah? If her head were any bigger, she wouldn't be able to fit through the studio doors. Still, I felt her anger was more that of a reader who was moved by a book and found out she was duped, but that's just MHO.

That I can handle. Everyone is entitled to their opinion as a reader. What one person loves, another hates. No one is right. However, I can just imagine her going to work after the Larry King phone call and her finding out about Frey and them all egging her on, "You ain't gonna take that, are ya? HUH? HUH? You're Oprah. Nobody does that to Oprah!"

You have every right to enjoy or not enjoy a book, but the author was wrong. He lied. He sold the book under false pretenses. He even admits it. It was a huge lie, and a huge error on the part of the publisher and even oprah. This isn't just my opinion, it's fact.

Don't know anything about the book in question, but haven't liked Oprah for a very long time now.. She's about as self-absorbed as a person can possibly be..

I haven't been able to stomach her for quite some time. Her excess and flaunting of her "favorite things" far overshadow the charity work she does. I have a lot of friends that watch religiously though. The two sentences I dread hearing more than anything usually start with, "I saw on Oprah...." and "Dr. Phil says....."

:lmao: Don't get me started on Dr. Phil!!! :lmao: "And I'll tell you what I think you need to do to solve all of your problems after the break..." *break* "Ok folks, that's all we have time for today see you tomorrow". But back on topic, I used to love Oprah but lately (past year or so) it's become look how great I am and look how much I've done for everyone and everyone should aspire to be me. But at least she has gotten prettier over the years. I'll give her that. Billions of dollars will usually do that, well I take that back. It hasn't done anything for Bill Gates or Donald Trump.

If I ask nicer this time, will someone tell me what this means?

OK, I'm just really bugged by this. I don't know Oprah, and I have watched and enjoyed her show from time to time, but I'm not suggesting anyone else should watch and enjoy it, but to suggest that her Angel Network is outshined by a personality that you don't like? That's just not right.

That charity is not only one of the highest rated charities (meaning most of the money actually goes to help people) but it has raised awareness for causes most of us never even knew existed.

I don't care what you think of Oprah, in fact most of the big philanthropists in history, I've heard, weren't even the nicest people in the world but they made a huge difference to humanity, as Oprah surely will.

The Hermes incident, we really don't know what happened. People here will tell you that she had a hissy fit because they wouldn't stay open for her, but she says they were making racist comments, and I've seen some very racist things happen in France and it is certainly possible, especially if they didn't recognize her. But we don't know. And how do things like this negate the good that she does. Man, it drives me crazy!!!!!!!!!!!

I'M NOT GOING TO DEFEND OPRAH OR THE JAMES FREY BOOK, BUT WHAT I WILL SAY IS OPRAH'S NOT THAT BAD SHE IS ENTERTAINMENT JUST LIKE DISNEY. SHE HAS HELPED A FEW FOLKS ALONG THE WAY AND MADE PLENTY OF MONEY. GOOD FOR HER! WHO HER WOULDN'T JUMP IN HER SHOES IN A HEARTBEAT?
AS FOR THE BOOK 'A MILLION LITTLE PIECES' WAS OUT FOR ABOUT 7 YEARS BEFORE OPRAH SELECTED IT FOR HER BOOK CLUB AND IT SOLD ABOUT 10,000 COPIES UNTIL THE OPRAH SHOW ( SHE MADE THAT BOOK SELL) SO MAYBE SHE THINKS SHE WAS EXPLOITED. (I WONDER HOW MANY PEOPLE HAVE FELT EXPLOITED BY OPRAH?)
I WILL HOLD MY JUDGEMENT ON THE AUTHOR. I DID READ THE BOOK BEFORE THE CONTOVERSY AND IT WAS ENTERTAINING. IT IS A MEMOIR AND I HAVE A HARD TIME OTHER MEMOIR AUTHOR'S DON'T EMBELISH I.E HOW COULD THE AUTHOR OF 'ANGELA'S ASHES (FRANK MCCORT) REMEMBER THE DETAILS OF HIS LIFE INCLUDING CONVERSATIONS AT 5 :confused3

SOBRIETY IS A HARD ROAD TO WALK AND SHAME ON OPRAH FOR NOT UNDERSTANDING THAT. MY BROTHER DIED FROM ADDICTION AND I CAN SAY FIRST HAND NO ONE GETS IT UNLESS YOU HAVE LIVED IT OR LOVED SOME ONE WHO HAS.

I only watch Oprah when she has someone on I really like!
She seems WAY to into herself for me! :confused3
