Where to place the fireplace?

Should we have it angled in the corner or have it just against the stright wall? This is going in our family room, there will be no TV in this room.

It is going to be a white jefferson marble, direct vent gas, for our new house we are building this summer. Thanks!

We have our woodburner in the corner of our family room(with a stone hearth built around it). I like it that way because it takes up space that isn't usually needed. When you put it on a straight wall, you limit that space somewhat. I think it also depends on the look you are going for. We were going for rustic/cozy, rather than formal. Mainly, because this is the most 'lived in' room of our house.

I am sure there are pros and cons either way.

I like a fireplace as a dominant feature in a room(except a bedroom) and I think that it looks nice centered on a wall.The previous OP's wood burner looks very nice in the corner.

And, of course...since a fireplace doesn't stick out as far, it can really look great centered on a wall and not take up tons of space.

One thing I would suggest, since you are in the planning stages, is to add a spot light or two above it. (ours is a recessed can light that is on a dimmer switch). Just adds a really nice effect, showcasing the area, especially when you decorate during the holidays.

LOL, my DH is an electrician, you can never have too many lighting options.

Go into a big bookstore, like barnes and noble and order a cup of coffee and just flip thru the pictures of all the architectural digests, remodel, new home plans etc magazines they have. A big book store will literally have 30 different magazines at any given time...not all that you want to buy, becasue they can cost $12 each! My local store does not have any problem with this. They have tables set right there between the coffee and the racks! You have to figure out your personal preference. My choice in your situation would be make it a focal point! Have fun!

NO TV in a 'family" room? lol! I thought that's what a family room was for!!!
jk really. I have no idea what 'Jefferson Marble" is. Assuming it's a colonial mantel-hence 'Jefferson', I'd say it belongs in the center of a wall or as the centerpiece of a discussion area in the room itself. This is your big chance to decorate exactly as you please. I agree that AD and the bookstore with lots of coffee and some biscotti could give you tremendous help.

We have a dual sided gas fireplace in our family room. The other side is in the living room. They're on short walls but centered in the room. I know you said you're not planning to have a TV in your family room but you might want to think as though you might some day.

I much prefer a fireplace against a straight wall, but I am pretty traditional when it comes to decorating.

i think it depends on the size and shape of the room. our former home had a fireplace on a large wall-it worked well because we had room on either side to use as we needed. the current rental we are in has it as the focal point on a small wall (it's a smaller family room rectangular in shape). as a result we can't put anything on either side and we have lost space. we also can't put a christmas tree in the room because it's not safe to have it near the fireplace, and the only other open space (not taken up by seating which can't be changed due to size and configuration) would block a walkway.

i think you need to look at what you want to do with the room, the furniture you are likely to put into in-and any changes to the room that you might choose to do down the line. the other consideration for me would be how the placement would affect how the gas line would be plumed. if it was considerably easier access with one over the other i would probably opt for that (in the home we had built the gas line would have gone under flooring-so in the event we had gone gas having a direct line vs one with multiple 'turns' would have in the event of repair been much less costly to deal with).

The garage is not going to be on that side.

The family room is the one we want to put the fireplace in. The livingroom is going to be where the TV is.

I had planned on placing the fireplace in the side where there are no widows in the family room, but in the corner, now I'm just not sure if I want to place it in the center of the wall. We also want to be able to place the christmas tree in this room.

If this was going to be YOUR choice, where would you put it??

If you center it on the long wall, you will still have room for the xmas tree in the corner, or between the two windows.

I would probably put it on the long wall since you are not having a tv in there, it would be the focal point of the room.
