Hi everyone,

I just made up a shoebox of disney stuff, school supplies, books, etc. for the Operation Christmas Child program. It is sponsored by www.samaritanspurse.org

Has anyone else sent boxes for kids thru this great program?
The instructions for packable items are on this website. Our church locally is sponsoring this program and all boxes made up here will be sent to Mpls for distribution overseas.

Gave away all my mickey mouse soaps, yay!

We are doing this both at my church and at the daycare I work at.

Personally, I think it is a GREAT program! ;) (That is where I work.)

How close are you to the processing center in Minneapolis? Your church or even a group of friends might want to look into volunteering at the processing center for a day or so. It is lots and lots of fun.

I work on the computer end of things, so I do not get to see too much of the processing. But when I do get the time to see it I am always amazed.

Remember - don't put chocolate in the boxes. They have to take it out because it might melt and make a mess or go rancid. Then we HAVE TO help them dispose of it! ;)

Boots,

Great idea for daycares to be involved!

DS's school participates in the program every year... I think it's a wonderful thing for the kids to get involved in. Last year, they were invited to help at the primary collection center for our region... that seemed to have a big impact on the kids... I think it helped them feel as though they were truly involved in helping these kids. I'm glad you posted this Herc...I'd forgotten that our boxes are due at the school in just a few days!!

My Girls Scout Trip filled approx 6 of these a few years ago. We used Rubbermaid shoe boxes in the hopes that they could be utilized in some way by the families.

Lots of people use those boxes and they work wonderfully! They hold up very well and can later be used like you said.

Hey, good idea to use the rubbermaid box. I'll get one tomorrow.

chellnjr, what a great place to work!

I am about 90 min from Mpls. Our chuirch is looking for colunteers to go up and help with distribution. Maybe I should go.

I use lifesavers for candy. That chocolate must be a mess to deal with.

They do processing on Saturdays if that works best for you. When watching the processing of the shoeboxes I am just amazed at all the hard work people put into making them and making filler items. Some people work all year long making dolls, scarves, hats, etc. to be used as filler items.

It is an experience you will remember for a very long time!

When sorting the shoeboxes they take the chocolate out so they don't have to deal with the mess later. I guess they learned the hard way during the first few years.

This is the first year that our church is coordinating sending boxes. I am working on our family's since it is due at church this weekend.

All of our church programs (Church, Awana, Preschool, Sunday School, etc...) particpate in this. I really love this program. Our family will be filling at least 2 shoes boxes. Our Sparks Awana filled at least 8 boxes last week!

My DD school did this one year. It was fun I think I will do it again:D

Our youth group stuffed over 500 boxes last year and is looking to break that record this year. We just saw a video at services on Sunday of smiling happy kids in very poor environments with their boxes.

Wow Robin, 500 boxes, that's amazing! Our church also saw the video of children receiving their boxes and their sweet, smiling faces. I think this is such a good work, a very practical one that our kids can get involved in. I love taking my kids shopping and having them pick out useful, fun things, as they think about the child that will receive it. It makes it very personal. Great to hear how many from the DIS are involved!

Wow, I had no idea so many Dissers were involved in this program!

Rock'nRobin...500 boxes is awesome.

Hmmm, this would make a good year round project, too.
