DH and I are going to be in the Orlando area next week while I interview for a potential job. We will have one free day and are thinking about spending it at Disney, but we don't know which park to choose! We have been before, but mostly for 3 day trips with the high school band (he's the director.) We have never been to AK.

Which park would you go to and why?

You're from Memphis, so you understand humidity. The heat, however, can be a little more intense. If you usually go to EPCOT or Magic Kingdom, I'm going to recommend Animal Kingdom, for the following reasons:
  • More shade while walking around, especially early morning and late afternoon
  • Good indoor theatre shows when you need a break (Finding Nemo, Celebration of the Lion King, Bug's Life)
  • The lush landscaping seems to fit with the heat. Maybe it's the Asia-Africa-Arizona themes, but he heat seems more appropriate at AK than, say, the Canada section of the World Showcase.
  • The uneven pavement makes great puddles for splashing after the 3pm rainstorm!
  • Safari Amber. You can't buy a beer in the Magic Kingdom.
  • Kali River Rapids will cool you off.
  • Best lunch at Disney: 1/2 roast chicken at Flame Tree BBQ. Get a double order of beans instead of the coleslaw.
That being said, you really can't make a bad choice. Star Wars weekend at Hollywood Studios last week was a blast, but there's always something going on. Don't forget to wear a hat, use 50spf sunscreen and keep a poncho in your back pocket.

Welcome to Florida!

I would have to agree with Businessgypsy that you should visit AK; especially since you have never been to this park. Personally, I really like this park for the overall theme, rides, shows, and of course, the food. Here are my personal "MUST DO" when visiting AK in no particular order:

Rides:
Kilimanjaro Safari (outstanding)
Expedition Everest (a thrill and the queue is unique)
It's Tough to be a Bug (inside the Tree of Life!)
Kali River Rapids (you will get wet!)
DINOSAUR (incredible ride)

Shows:
Festival of the Lion King (must see!)
Finding Nemo
Mickey's Jammin' Jungle Parade

Food:
Flame Tree BBQ (my personal fav at AK)
Tusker House (if you want a sit-down lunch or dinner)
Yak & Yeti (my personal fav for a sit-down lunch or dinner)

This is a really fun park to visit but wear comfortable shoes. Enjoy it and have fun!!!

Michele

It all sounds so wonderful! I know after my interview I will need some fun! Even though we live in Memphis, we haven't been out in the heat too much, so shade will be needed. Now, I need to get the job so we can buy AP!

Good luck! Disney fans should get an employment preference for being smarter and more fun than the average bear. Wait 'till you get a Florida license and go for the Florida seasonal annual pass. Incredibly cheap, and only blacked out when it's too hot or the crowds are too big. (Mid summer and major holidays). If you are diehard, a Resident's regular AP is $120 more, and you get free parking ($14/day, unless you know the free lot - and I'm not telling!)

AK secret: behind the fastpass machines for It's Tough to be a Bug, there is an unmarked paved path to the left of the roped off attraction entrance pathway. It winds around the base of the Tree of Life, giving you an up close view of the incredible detail there. The path comes out behind some benches almost in front of Pizzafari, close to the bridge to the Africa section. Unmarked from that direction also.

Here's a pic I took there last weekend:

Try to ride Kilimanjaro Safari first thing in the morning and/or at the end of the day. The animals are most active then. The Expedition Everest ride is the best thrill ride in the park. If you love it as much as I do, after you've gone through the stand-by line, you can also go in as a single rider, but do the regular line first, because there isn't much to see in the single rider line.

If you do both animal walks (one in Africa, one in Asia), you can use Flights of Wonder as a break between them.

My favorite meal in Animal Kingdom is an order of corn dog nuggets from the little stand near Yak and Yeti's with a frozen Coke from the slushie place across from Flights of Wonder. I usually take my meal down to the little eating area next to the slushie place and sit facing the river.

You can also check with a CM or (maybe) Guest Relations to see if there are any animals being treated at Rafiki's Planet Watch/Conservation Station. Those are morning events, too, so I would head out there after doing the first Safari ride.

Since it is apparent that everyone wants you at AK, here is my advice: see if you can track down DiVine at least once in the day. My experience when I went was that four out of five CMs had no idea what I was talking about, but if you talk to one in her area, they should have a secret times guide to let you know when she will appear.

Wow! Thanks for all the great information! We sure wish we had more than 1 day so we could do all the parks! Should I make ADR's if we decide to do a sit down lunch or dinner? Or do you think we can walk in without a problem? I think after 18 months of no date nights, we will be so happy to be spending time together we won't really care what we are doing! We probably won't get this opportunity very much in the future after our DS understands what WDW is!

If you have any more words of wisdom you want to share, please do! I love the one about looking for Divine!

MikeinBoston - I think you read my mind! We actually ended up going to MK because the park closed later and I wanted to see the Summer Nightastic. We had a great time and are hoping to return later this year with our son to spend more time and see AK.

If you decide on Animal Kingdom, be sure to see Festival of the Lion King. It's the best show at all of WDW.

This must be a great show b/c everyone says that!!! I have been several times to WDW and AK and still have not seen it :confused3

Divine "hangs" out on the path between Asia and Africa, just before you get to Harambe Village. There is a secluded overlook for the Discovery River across the Path, currently Flik is there taking pictures.

I love Epcot... my favorite rides.. It has it all, great rides, great food from multiple countries and of course it will take all day to get through the park.. Animal kingdom is great but much hotter than all the other parks because of all the plants.
