I looked thru my moms stuff took out what I needed and just pitched it. Why shred? I sent her death certificate to three main credit reporting agencies and i didn't see the need to shred countless papers. It's been 3 years and no reprocussions.

I guess I'm a little more paranoid about this stuff. Mostly because I had *my* identity stolen about 8 years ago. You're probably right to believe it's no big deal, but I don't think my brothers would go along with just tossing it either...

I feel your pain, when we had to put my grandmother in a nursing home, I helped my mom clean out her apartment. She was also a pack rat who saved every single canceled check! Be very careful though, my grandma would hide money inside the envelopes, we found over $1,000!!!

Check pockets, too. When we had to clean out my mother's things, we went through all the pockets of her clothing and found some $$.

My dad died in 1993. We found a pay stub from 1952. Now keep in mind we moved every 6 months or so so we had been lugging around all this stuff for YEARS!!! I can totally relate!

Also be very careful to check suit pockets. In my late FIL's suit pockets we found MIL's good pearls, tucked away after an evening out.
