This may sound crazy but I've never ridden Space Mountain, I know right! I'm heading back in July and plan to just walk on and never look back. But I was curious, on a scale of 1-10 where is Space Mountain. In terms of thrill. I've been on Thunder Mountain Railroad once before, really didn't like the feeling it had. It felt like I had been shaken all over, though I'll probably end up doing it again. Additionally, I've added a poll. Please tell me about your experiences on the ride, and how you would rate it. Rather than make the choices on the poll 1-10, I'll add descriptive responses just so its easier.

I'd rate Expedition Everest as a 6, Space Mountain as a 5, Big Thunder is a 4, Barnstormer & 7 Dwarfs are a 3.

space is quite jerky, in the dark and loops around a lot. It doesn't have any backwards or upside down though.

Space Mountain is completely different than Thunder Mountain. MUCH less shaking around. It is completely dark but otherwise it's pretty tame, a few drops and bends, but's it's the darkness that makes the ride what it is. Give it a try for sure. It's one of my families favorites

Thanks guys. If all goes well I'll give it a try. While I've done quite a lot at WDW during previous trips there's also a lot that I haven't done. No reason to miss out. :earsboy:

I give it a 6, just because of the unknown factor as you hurtle through the dark.

That's the only thing for me. If it weren't for the darkness I'd have no trouble going right on. Then again, it's called Space Mountain for a reason.

Agree with many points here. If the coaster was outdoors, I'd consider it mild. But the darkness adds a dimension to it that (at least the 1st time you ride it) makes it pretty thrilling.

I would not say "mild", but I would not say "quite the thrill ride" either.

Agree with everything tink said. Rock n Roller Coaster would be a 7 or 8. Space Mountain is definitely jerky, which is made worse by it being in the dark. On our last trip, on a day when BTMRR was being refurbed, we rode Space 4 times in various seats. We both agreed that the back car (there are two cars, three riders each) was more jerky than the front car, and the very first seat was more thrilling/scary because you've got nothing in front of you.

My 11 year old daughter finally got up the nerve to ride SM on our last trip, which means that I was finally about to ride SM as well. The ride itself seemed to me to be about the equivalent of Primeval Whirl in AK, in that it's basically high speed curves and small drops, but the difference is that the SM is in the dark, so you can't really prepare yourself for what is about to happen. Turned out that she loved SM and was kicking herself for waiting so long to finally ride it.

The only two thrill rides that she has yet to go on are ToT and RnR. I have a feeling that RnR might be next - not sure I see ToT happening (which I'm actually ok with - not a big fan of sudden drops myself).

I feel the opposite of many people....I am not a roller coaster person but I enjoy Space Mountain. I have a fear of heights. I like that Space Mountain is in the dark and I cannot see how high up I am! Otherwise I probably would not even attempt it!

I voted quite the thrill ride because I normally view it as a normal coaster nothing too crazy but also not a kiddie coaster but I keep forgetting how rough it can be. I feel like every time I go on it, it feels faster, jerkier and longer.

Overall thrill compared to other parks, about a 4

Thrill compared to other Disney rides, about a 6.5

Terms of Disney rides only..
Big thunder a 6
Rockin Rollercoaster a 9
Expedition Everest 8
ToT 10
Splash Mountain 5
Barnstormer 0.5
7 dwarfs 5

Really the dark is what gets people. It's a kiddie coaster track. I love roller coasters so Space really isn't much "thrill", more so just fun since it's dark.

The problem for me in rating this for me is that I did not start riding roller coasters until just the summer before my first ride on Space Mountain. That summer I had jumped in feet first with looped coasters with large drops. At the start of Space Mountain, I remember being slightly worried so it had "quite the thrill" feel. By the time I was done, I felt like it was "piece of cake" compared to what I was used to.

If you are not used to roller coasters, then at the start of Space Mountain, it is going to have the "quite the thrill" feeling no matter what. By the end, it might be the same or it might be slightly less thrilling.

It's pretty rough, but they added a brake system recently to smooth it out considerably. For a first time ride, try to hang on to the lap bar.

If you're a big thrill ride fan, it's probably like a 6. If you don't like thrill rides, you're gonna absolutely hate it.

I hate big drops but don't mind roller coasters without big drops. So big thunder mountain doesn't scare me but Splash mountain scares me. I find Space mountain fun. No big drops but cool being in the dark. The dark does add a lot of thrill to it, otherwise, it's pretty mild.

I mean it's no RnR, but it's a pretty rough ride. I love it. Has a lot of turns, twists and drops and you can't see more than a foot in front of you. It's the best. I'd rate it a 5 for intensity. It's a wild ride, I really didn't start noticing it until I grew a bit older ;)

I would rate it between mild and thrill. The darkness is what makes it. Get in the front seat of the front car so you have nothing in front of you and it's even better.
