On Keto, going off for 2 weeks: what happens?

I just began a lifestyle of Keto recently and I love it a lot!

But when I'm at WDW for 2 weeks in February, and possibly at DL for a few days in January, or any other trip that I go on in 2019 (about once a month starting in January), I do not want to be on Keto while I'm there. It's largely beer I want to be able to drink. One of my favorite things about going places is trying new breweries. However, while in DL and in WDW, I will be breaking it for more than just beer.

Will this be a bad thing to do in general? Should I rethink cheating or being on Keto in general?

As I understand it, you either achieve ketosis or you don't. Without the fat-burning benefits of ketosis, a keto-type diet can be extremely calorie dense and if you're roughly still eating that way and consuming carbs, I imagine you're going to feel super-sluggish and re-gain weight. You can actually gain quite a bit in a two week period.

Are you Keto now because of health reasons like needing it for something like Epilepsy? Or are you doing it for a fad diet type thing?

If it's the latter you should be good. But don't be surprised if you start taking in large amounts of carbs again that you start Carb Dumping which is very unpleasant to say the least.

I eat a low carb diet in my day-to-day life. I don’t usually follow that diet when I am away. When I am on plan, I lose weight. Lately I have been out of town every weekend and I have not stayed on plan while away. I usually gain a pound or 2 during the weekend. Even on longer trips, when I have gained more, I find that if I go back on plan when I get home, those pounds seem to come off quickly. My joke these past few weeks, is that I keep losing the same 2 pounds every week...because I lose them, put them back while away each weekend and then lose them again. There’s not much I can do about it though. I’ve been visiting my colylege kids and it’s very hard to eat well in small college towns.

A couple other thoughts...a lot of the time the couple pounds that I gain, I believe is due to the high sodium you get when you eat out. I think It makes me retain water and that is why I lose it quickly after. Also, I have found that a mini-cheat day seems to often kick start my weight loss when I go back on plan.

Those couple of pounds aren’t actual weight. You’re correct, it’s just water. Keto depletes your glycogen stores and when you eat carbs they rapidly fill back up again. Do you have a medical reason for doing Keto?

Tricky question... I have Hashimoto’s. While I don’t officially test in any way that requires me to eat this way, I feel much better when I stay on this plan. There is a lot of research that connects Hashimoto’s to gluten issues. Also, due to a severe lower back issue a couple years ago, and my thyroid/autoimmune disease going haywire, I put on about 35 pounds. My back still isn’t 100% and the vote is still out in my thyroid (retest in 3 months). I am thankfully only 20 pounds overweight (I was in pretty awesome shape when I got hurt and then my thyroid numbers started going crazy again), I drew a line and the sand and had to do something to 180 my weight gain.

Thanks for your replies!

Keto is out of choice not a necessity, for me. I guess I'm just nervous that if I randomly eat like foods that I will at Disney (where I know most of my carbs will be from sauces and drinks), will I get sick? I know I'll gain weight but will I be miserable otherwise?

I’ve been doing Keto for almost 2 months and have had two cheat days. I was also worried about being sick when I ate carbs again but had zero issues. I also plan to take. Keto hiatus af WDW. My plan is to start a few days ahead of time just in case, but I’m not anticipating any problems.

I’m not keto, but I’ve had a lot of stomach problems when I go off of my diet at WDW I eat a daily calorie allowance that is in proportion with my weight. Right now, for example, it’s 1700. I get really bad gas and indigestion— it would wake me up in the middle of the night with excruciating pain. I’ve managed to avoid it now by taking some simethicone and pepcid before bed.

I would bring antacids or simethicone in case your stomach can’t handle eating more than you’re used to.

I think you'll be fine. I'm not keto either, but I am into nutrition. When I'm on vacation, I still eat a clean "base" of foods, but then I'll add in whatever I want. Cookies, cake, ice cream, chips, fried food, you name it I'll eat it. I may gain a few pounds, but I'm OK with that. When I get home, I don't "diet", I simply go back to my normal nutrition and the few lbs come off really fast. Actually, I often even wind up losing an extra pound or two...my metabolism spikes while on vacation, and that lasts a little while after getting home.

Go, enjoy, eat, relax.
