Old Navy Changes their return/exchange policy

I just had to return a swimsuit at the Disney Store and an employee gave me a hard time about it becuase the tag was not attached. The tag had just been pulled out off the van and the little plastic thing was still sticking out of the swimsuit and I had the tag and the reciept, it had obviously never been worn (save for trying it on) let alone washed and she was a real b*&%# about it from the second I said I needed to return it. Then she turn snottily to the manager and says "This HAS to have the tag ON it right? I can't return it like this right?" The manager came over, looked at it and said ' no, you can return that she has the tag, reciept and it hasn't been worn'. Then the employee spent the entire transaction grumbling about store policy and how things have to have tags ON them. I very nicely told her that my 2 yo had pulled it off in the van and I'm sorry I ruined her day. Ugh. The Disney store is far enough away from my house that I had to make a special trip there in the first place and then another special trip to return it and I would probably have bought some other stuff that day if she wasn't so flippin rude from the get go.

I was in the Gap and they had a sign saying they were changing their policy. It is the same as the new Old Navy policy which makes sense since it is the same company. The wording said that if you didn't have the original receipt and you wanted to exchange something that you would get the voucher mailed to you. I asked the sales person if this applied to gift receipts since the policy specifically stated that you had to have the original. They said yes it did. So if you were given a gift with a gift reciept it wouldn't really help you. I hope that the person was mistaken. Why would you give a gift from these stores if you knew that the receipent would have to go through all of this? I understand the issues with theft and why it is important to make these changes but since when isn't a gift receipt enough proof?

QUOTE=brendat22]Also someone said that when they made a return Old Navy would not give them back the tax that was paid - this also would never happen - it is illegal!! The computer would automatically refund any tax that was paid. QUOTE]

How can you say that this can never happen, when i am telling you that it did. Maybe it is different from state to state?

Abbie 13_15: I don't mean to offend you - that is not my intention at all. The reason I said it could not happen is because Old Navy had problems with this problem when they had there old registers. Employees had to manually input the state code and hit the "tax" button everytime we rang up something taxable. (this was done because in some states, MN for one, clothes are not taxable but notebooks, jewelry, etc... is). This would cause problems when we had returns from out of state and sales associates would not pay attention to the state the original purchase was from and just assume no tax was paid. Old Navy actually had to pay a huge penalty to the government because some sales associates were not charging tax on things like purses/notebooks/jewelry/etc... This caused Old Navy to get new registers nationwide that are much more up to date and automatically take care of tax - so there is no more operator error! When a return is done it automatically returns tax paid - it is all computerized. We never had that problem again - unless your return was about 4 years ago I don't know how this could have happened? Please don't take offense - I worked there for 9 years and am pretty knowledgeable on this subject. I know that some sales associates can be rude - and I'm sorry if that happened to anyone - but Old Navy as a company is very Customer Service oriented.

Now that makes sense to me.

I will let you all know: although Nordstrom is expensive, the will REFUND w/out a receipt! They've done it more than once...but I've spent more $ there than I care to think about!

I agree it is expensive, but I do find some things on sale there cheap. Thats very trusting to do it without a receipt.

First of all, I work in a store that does not accept returns at all, end of story, and we only accept size exchanges for an identical item within 90 days of original purchase w/ original receipt and tags in tact. That being said, occassionally management does make exceptions. Policies such as this are in place because of the HUGE amount of abuse!! Some girls will buy a formal gown, purse, specialty bra, etc., wear it to their event, and then try to return it. It happens way more often than most people would think.

That being said, I do not shop anywhere that will not let me return for a full refund w/ receipt. I also always (or at least mostly, other than below...) keep the receipt and tags in tact until I am ready to wear/use the item, just in case I decide I don't want it.

And I actually exchanged a top for a different size at Old Navy yesterday--with no tags and no receipt. I was going to just buy the different size anyway, and I mentioned to the girl that I had a larger size at home but I had already thrown away the tags and receipt. She told me to just bring the other one in and she did exchange it.
