ok, so I've got Beatles on the brain

actually, it was the cover of Abbey Road. the four of them were walking across the road. it was supposed to be representative of a funeral --- John wore white (the preacher), Ringo was the pall bear and George the grave digger. Paul was barefoot and carrying a cigarette -- the corpse. there were other "clues" too -- like John saying on the White Album that "Paul is dead". supposedly there were phone numbers on the cover of the White Album, and when you called you got more "clues". there were even rumors that an imposter was used for some photos for one of the album covers.

Check out the license plate on the car in the Abbey Road picture too. :)

I heard that somehow this rumor started and the Beatles decided to have some fun after they heard about it.

Some of the hints were supposed to be in songs too. Like "he blew his mind out in a car..." in a Day In The Life. Supposedly, you could play a few songs backwards and pick up phrases too. The picture on the cover of Sgt Pepper was supposedly a funeral scene with lots of deceased people in the crowd and a hand over Paul's head signifying death.

Someday I'll have to go to a record shop and study the covers.

it was supposed to have been a traffic accident that killed him, because he had his eye on a meter meaid. Lovely Rita?

some of the photos on one of the album covers were supposed to be of a stand-in named William Campbell instead of Paul.

Paul McCartney was "killed" in 1966 in a car accident and was "replaced" by William Campbell, a look a like. ;)

"Clues" start with Revolver and go onward. For example on Sgt. Pepper, Paul's back is to the camera on the back cover; on his suit he wears a patch that says OPD (officially pronounced dead, as opposed to Ontario Police Dept. which is where the patch came form). A Day In the Life tells Car Crash (He blew his mind out in a car) Magical Mystery Tour -- Paul is wearing a black carnation at the end of the film. All the others have red. "I Am The Walrus" also as a musical number and song has clues. During the movie there are policeman lined up during the song as there were after the "crash". Also the "Walrus" is a sign of death in some cultures (but nobody can say what culture that might be). By the "White" album John comes right out and says in "Glass Onion" -- "Here's another clue for you all...the Walrus was Paul." By that time they were "in" on the joke. Also if you play Revolution #9 backwards you hear sounds from the crash as well as "Paul is dead, miss him, miss him." (don't even bother to listen to it forwards). In the Ringo tune, "Don't Pass Me By" he sings "You were in a car crash, and you lost your hair" (a reference to the fact that Paul was supposedly decapitated). We round this all out with Abbey Road where Paul, dressed in his funeral grab and shoeless crosses the street with John in white (symbolizing the ambulance attendant), George in jeans (symbolizing the grave digger) and Ringo in a suit (the undertaker). The white volkswagon BEETLE in the background tells the tale with the license plate (28 IF) -- of course Paul was only 27 at the time, but...and the plate actually read LMW28IF...

The fact that Paul was hiding out with his then girlfriend, Linda in a remote location in Scotland (not far from Campbelltown -- which gave rise to the William Campbell tale) didn't help.

Ultimately, William Campbell and the rest of the Beatles didn't get along, so they broke up (the true reason. ;) )

Is Paul dead? Or is he still alive? Check out the license plate on the White Beetle on Paul's album "Paul is Live" ;)

and the truth is Paul has outlived John and George.

I suspect that many people did believe Paul died...and those same people now believe Elvis is alive.

There are webistes dedicated to the whole story and various "clues". It's been a few years since I have visited any of them but I'm sure a google or dogpile, et al. search will uncover them.

It is interesting reading...

Got some time on our hands, do we?

;)

Oh, it's okay to browse Disney boards but not to go to other websites?

:D

While the Beatles White Album did not have the musical genius of Spinal Tap's Black Album, I knew it had clues to Paul's "death".
