Your best friend's mother died unexpectedly...her funeral and memorial service is on Saturday. Conflictingly, your nephews daughter's first birthday is also the same day and time. What do you do????? Let me specify here, your best friend you have known for 20 years The nephew is on your in-laws side So.....

I would be there for my best friend. The child will have many more birthdays, won't remember who is there anyway, and is clearly not neglected.

I would absolutely go to my best friend's mother's funeral. I would think (and hope) that your nephew's family would understand.

absolutely go to the funeral. Your nephew will never remember that you weren't there for his 1st birthday party he will have many more to come that you can attend. Your friend clearly needs you more right now, and there is only one chance to say goodbye!

Was someone giving you grief over this? I just can not possibly imagine anyone putting a birthday party over a funeral.

yeah, I sure did , Tim.....some people think that family is thicker than friends no matter what the circumstance sorry, I tend to disagree
