Oh, The Places We’ll Go! From the “stars” to the “sea”: Universal, SeaWorld & beyond - Spring 2016

I think I have fallen behind. My apologies. I have been running GC's shows for three nights this week and then we had a year end party last night. The party was epic, it ended at 7pm  . Yes, early but after 3 days in a row of being at work all day and then going straight to the theatre until after 10pm each night I am beyond exhausted.

I think I missed two days, so here you go......

Good luck on the job!

as far as Cracker Barrel goes...we may have a few of those peg games (and other assorted items from that gift shop) floating around the house...

How do you look so cute despite having wet hair?! Also, I love those sunglasses!!!

LOL, you are such a sweet heart :goodvibes. I looked at all the pictures we had taken by the park photographers that day and that was the only one I was willing to share :rolleyes1. I surveyed them all and thought, I look like a drowned rat!! It's hard to have a good hair day at a water park, as you most certainly know :rolleyes2.

Those glasses are one of my gojane.com purchases. I think they shocked Jake. He was rather gobsmacked that his aging mother would buy something that was much more youthful than her normal black framed sunglasses from Walmart.

Aquatica looks like a fun waterpark...I will definitely want to try it sometime! The buffet looked good too...I'm sometimes leary of buffets but I'm glad you had a good experience this time!

This was the best Aquatica buffet experience we've had. Previous visits have been hit-or-miss, at best. I was happy to see they have taken the right steps to improve both the food items and the cleanliness of the buffet stations. I now also see that they are serving breakfast, too....something new since we were there on May 1st.

Because I suck with the quotes, we don't have anything for sure planned soon as far as Florida. My mom and I are looking at going down in January/early February. I have over $100 in flight credit to use...so it can't go to waste. Plus I can work from wherever. We won't really hit the parks too much if we go.
I do have a trip to DC planned in September.

Now those buffet pictures are making me hungry and crave the bad food!

It would be a shame to see your flight credit expire.....that's a great reason for a trip all on its own. A little resort getaway in the dead of winter sounds like a perfect escape!

See, in this end of the province we have debates over Swiss Chalet vs St Hubert. And Tim Horribles vs. Starstrucks coffee. And hockey...

Okay there is a difference between who I root for and who has the better team, and it can vary by year. But being a native Torontonian, who spent his early childhood living in Montreal, and most of his adult life in Ottawa. I would have to say that in most years Montreal mounts the better team. And it has the most passionate fan base. I am still an Ottawa fan, but have to look at the records and history.

We have St. Huberts in Canada? :confused3 I had no idea! It's been a while since I've been to the nation's capital (not much reason to go there since Jake's high school sports career ended) but I think I may have to look it up the next time we venture east.

Great picture of you guys at Aquatica! ::yes::

Sending you some pixiedust: for your job interview. It sounds like a great opportunity for you, Gina! :goodvibes Please don't stop writing trips reports though! Even if it takes a whole year to write it, we'll still follow along! ::yes::

If the new job does, indeed, pan out (and there's no guarantee that it will), I will do my best to keep up the reporting in one form or another :goodvibes. I probably put more pressure on myself to adhere to a consistent timeline than anyone else does.....its the perfectionist in me shining through. An October PTR should be workable either way. After that, we shall take it as it comes :teeth:.

Fingers crossed on the job front. It's a big decision to leave somewhere after 18 years :goodvibes

The buffet actually looks good value with plenty of choice. Your day is going swimmingly well!

Yep, I am not ashamed to admit that it's been quite a moral dilemma for me. Tough to leave the "known" behind to embark on the "unknown", especially when my current employers have treated me like a member of their family. I have faith that whatever should happen will ultimately be what does happen, though, so for now....I'm just trying to be patient until the new company makes a final decision. My only problem? I'm not a very patient person by nature :rotfl:. But I'm working on that!

Good luck with the job interview! I hope it won't mean the end of all trip reports if you get it though :)

Thank you, my friend! It may end up being a non-issue entirely. If I get turned down for this new opportunity, I might be here on the boards even more often......I'll need something to cheer me up!

Really......now tell us Gina, what are you looking at? Is it their 'winning smiles'?

Well, OF COURSE that's it. What else would it be? :littleangel:

I have to say, the pocket lint one is especially interesting. Do you pronounce the "G"? ("guh-nurr" or just "nurr"?)

Good luck on the interview

Thank you! I will be sure to keep you all posted. If you see a post later this week that's just a series of crying faces, you'll know I didn't make the next cut :rolleyes2.

Good luck on the job!

Thank you :goodvibes. Fingers crossed!

I am seriously going to pick myself up one of those peg games in October :thumbsup2. Maybe even one for my mom, too :) . I never know what to bring her home (after our 10 trips down south, she has enough Florida t-shirts, mugs and other cheesy Orlando souvenirs to sink a boat) and I bet she'd have a ball with a peg game.

A) Good to hear about the tour boat!
B) Yes, Westwood; we HAVE stayed there; just not as often as the Lake Buena Vista one.
C) Well, there is the age gap for him and I; and a bit of a gap as to location as well ;)

Oh, the last one would be super easy to fix.....we would be happy to just move :teeth:.

Not sure if I will get an update posted today.......we are off to a Father's Day barbecue at my brother's house this afternoon. I didn't want to miss the opportunity to send out Father's Day wishes to those dads who are regular visitors to this thread, however: I hope you are all celebrated and honoured today as you so richly deserve :).

For those of you whose Dads have passed on , I send you each a big hug . No matter how old you are, or how long they've been gone, the emotions of special days like today are just so much more raw.

Treasure those awesome men among us today! :thumbsup2

Happy Father's Day Steve! What a cute picture of three generations of handsome men!

Aquatica seems well landscaped and not a bad place to walk around on a photo hunt. Do they require lifejackets in the lazy river? Or is it just more relaxing that way?

Good luck on the job! Maybe your current employer will increase your pay by 25% to keep you!

Thanks for the Father's Day wishes. I'm looking forward to a hot day of washing my car and puttering on the trailer. Car washing is my Father's Day tradition, starting back when I used to wash my dad's car every Father's Day. And yes, I do miss him more intensely on this day; we lost him to his battle with HD over 25 years ago now. But my own kids make it a joyful day, and I am BBQing up a whole mess of fajitas for dinner tonight for a special fun dinner.

And I don't think Gina necessarily needs a 25% pay increase. I think a 25% vacation time increase would serve all of us in the peanut gallery well! :goodvibes

Much as I'd like to think that my current employers would be able to match the salary increase, I know it won't be possible. The new company is a large firm with deep pockets, while my current office is a small partnership with more limited resources :(.

Life jackets are optional in the lazy river (unless you have small children, for which they mandatory them) but we enjoy the experience more with the jackets.....that way, you can just lift your feet and enjoy being swept along. Definitely much more relaxing and fun! :thumbsup2 Most folks, I think, find that wearing a jacket is the way to go: probably at least 80% of the people in Roa's will be wearing them.

LOL, if I somehow ended up with 25% more vacation time, I'd need a pay raise of 50% to fund it!! :rotfl:

Glad to hear you had a nice Father's Day weekend......awesome that your kiddos made it special in your honour :goodvibes. You certainly had some good weather for car-washing.....I betcha it dried almost instantly in that heat!

Loving the dolphin tour :)
Congratulations on your anniversary and upgrade :)

Thank you, c3h3a3r! :goodvibes

Sunday, May 1st: continued

After a hearty lunch, we headed back to the cabana for a little post-meal rest and relaxation :cloud9:.

The boys stretched out on the lounge chairs and were literally snoring in a matter of seconds :faint:. The water activities combined with the high heat and the big lunch had done them in. Apparently, it was nap time :rotfl2:.

THIS is the reason we love to get a cabana ::yes::. A nice, private place to stretch out in the shade and enjoy a little rest when a rest is called for. I left Junior and Senior sleeping while I went on tour once again......as a general rule, I'm not much of a napper......especially when there's so much other fun stuff to entertain me.

I stopped over to see the massive turtles who were smartly seeking solace from the sun in their shaded enclosure.

I also took some time to admire the tropical birds who call the park home.

I visited the Adventure Photo kiosk to have our pictures added to our Photokey AP....a process that only takes a few minutes if there aren't 20 other people waiting to chat with a team member. We have learned from experience that it is much better to do that before the end of the day, when lines are always ridiculously long.

Winding myself back towards the cabana, I stowed the camera in the locker and headed to Roa’s Rapids for a couple of leisurely (?) rotations while the boys rested....seriously, I could spend all day there and never get bored. I let the fellows sleep for about an hour before I finally roused them so that they could enjoy the park for a few more hours before closing. Once they were up, rehydrated with the bottles of water from our cabana fridge (the rental included 12 bottles of Dasani) and re-sunscreened, we were on our way for more water fun.

Since the guys had done all of the slides that morning with their Quick Queue passes, we stuck mostly to the line-free attractions during the very busy (and ridiculously steamy) afternoon. We pretty much rotated between the wave pools, Roa’s Rapids, and Loggerhead Lane, with the guys taking short breaks to grabbing more beverages and snacks from the buffet from time to time. Unlike on previous visits, when the park grew noticeably emptier after 3 pm, the crowds were in full force until the rides closed promptly at 5 pm. Even as the reminder announcements rang out every fifteen minutes from the one-hour-until-closing mark, hardly a soul was seen leaving the park. It was a spectacular day for water activities and everyone (including us!) was choosing to squeeze every single minute of fun out of the day that we could :beach:.

A few miscellaneous thoughts on our day at Aquatica:

* considering the crowds and the heat, the cabana was still a Godsend, even at the higher-than-we-are-accustomed-to price we paid ($134.99). If I cringed a bit when I was entering my credit card information during the booking process, I was patting myself on the back as we left the park at the end of our day.

* the introduction of Quick Queue is a superb idea, especially when they restrict the number sold to a very small amount. That said, it was so new that most guests didn't yet yet know that it even existed, and guys received more than one dirty look or nasty remark as they excused themselves to get past the people waiting in the general line (the QQ entrance was often well ahead of the end of the standby line, which necessitated a squeeze past of those who were waiting without QQ). I am sure this will change as more people learn about the new add-on and additional signage is incorporated throughout the park. We had an amazing day despite the crowds, but I'm not sure we would have had the same opinion if they had spent hours and hours waiting in a line in that heat just to ride a slide. In fact, they probably wouldn't have done many slides at all without the QQ passes.

The parking lot was completely clogged as the masses all exited at once…….it was as if we were back at Tropicana Field after the Rays game let out. It took us forever to get out of the lot, so we were very grateful for the super-short drive back to the Residence Inn.

We were all pretty weary as we dragged our waterlogged bodies into the elevators and up to our suite. And speaking of the elevators, I thought it was pretty cute that this property painted a SeaWorld scene on the inside of each of the doors: so, as you rode the short distance up to your floor (or down to the lobby), you had something cheery and fun to look at :):

With all of our grazing at the buffet that afternoon, no one was hungry or ready for dinner by the time we returned to the hotel: we would need at least a couple of hours between now and our evening meal. We hung up our wet swimwear and the guys stretched out in their respective rooms to catch up on the sports scores as well as their Facebook and email messages while I took a stroll around the property to take some photos of the recreational areas.

At that point in the day, it was pretty quiet in the common area off the main lobby. This is the section that is mainly used for breakfast seating in the morning, but you will also find guests relaxing there during non-breakfast hours, watching the news on one of the many flat screen TV’s or reading one of the complimentary newspapers :coffee:.

There are actually quite a few nice, relaxing places at this particular property to sit and recuperate after a long day at the parks. I especially love the rocking chairs that are all round the main level. So homey.

For guests wishing to enjoy their lunch or dinner right at the hotel, there is a lovely courtyard with tables, chairs and umbrellas, as well as a selection of gas grills for barbecuing.

For those that wish to leave the cooking to the experts, there is also a Pizza Hut Express onsite (located adjacent to the outdoor, covered bar). Prices are higher than your stand-alone Pizza Hut, but not crazy.

There is a large sport court (newly resurfaced since our last visit in 2012) with basketball nets on the opposite end of the courtyard from the pool and hot tub. The front desk has an assortment of sports equipment (basketballs and the like) for guest use: you just have to drop by and sign out the items you need.

These sofas, located near the sport court, looked pretty comfy. Maybe a good place to sit and enjoy a good book?

The pool, though, was definitely the most popular of all the recreational areas……especially for the younger guests.

The pool was zero-entry and featured several spitting fish that the little ones enjoyed being sprayed by. On that unusually warm May night, it was no wonder that the pool was the official “hot spot” of the hotel! ::yes::

As I returned to our suite, I passed the guys getting into the elevator. They wanted to spend a little bit of time shooting hoops on the sport court to work off a little of their Aquatica indulgences before we set off in search of dinner. That worked perfectly for me: I had enough time to enjoy a leisurely chat with my mom (who by now was missing us like CRAZY and literally counting the hours until we returned home) and attempt to tame my crazy waterpark hair before showing my face in public .

It was just after 8 when we headed out in search of dinner. Longhorns had been on the official itinerary for this night (which we were VERY excited about, as this would be a first visit for us) but it was PACKED when we arrived :crowded:. Checking in with the greeter at the podium, we were informed it would be at least an hour’s wait for a table…..and we were just too dog-tired to whittle away an hour or more before even being seated. Being the super-planner than I am, though, we had Plan B in our back pocket….and that restaurant wasn’t far away :thumbsup2.

Dinner wouldn’t be the new experience that we had anticipated, but a family favourite is often just as satisfying. Right?

The conclusion of our Sunday is next.

the crowds were in full force until the rides closed promptly at 5 pm.

That seems really early for closing time? I guess everyone was tired anyway...but you would think when it's so hot they might stay open later?

Curious to see where you ended up for dinner. Longhorns is also somewhere I've thought about trying in the US...but always been too busy...

Sunday, May 1st: the conclusion

I could tell that my men were rather disappointed as we returned to the car…..they had eagerly been looking forward to trying Longhorns for the first time :sad1:….but they quickly perked up when they heard what I was suggesting as an equally-as-pleasing alternate. I only had to get the words “Olive Garden” out of my mouth, and Steve was happily navigating the Kia toward Palm Parkway while Jake smiled broadly in the backseat :teeth:.

The restaurant was busy when we arrived (we have yet to visit that location when it’s been slow or quiet) but we were able to be seated immediately, much to everyone’s relief. You could tell we were getting close to the end of this epic vacation: the weariness was slowly (or maybe not so slowly? :rolleyes1) taking over. Poor Steve was so tired as we settled ourselves in our seats that he claimed he might just fall asleep in his soup :faint:. I guess the afternoon siesta wasn’t quite enough!

We had a wonderful young server here who was so darn sweet and full of energy, we again wanted for nothing throughout the duration of our meal. She was like Tigger in human form, bouncing back and forth between tables with a big smile that never left her face :tigger:. She took our beverage orders and had our drinks on the table in short order: water for Jake (we couldn’t convince him to be adventurous) and strawberry Italian sodas for Steve and I.

These were pretty (and non-alcholic), but the presentation and looks was better than their actual taste: there is no other way to describe them but bland :(. They didn’t come anywhere near the amazing flavour of the Italian soda I had at Carrabba’s on one of our 2015 vacations, so I will admit I was a bit disappointed in these drinks. The fresh strawberries used as garnish were delicious, but unfortunately, the only notable highlight. Neither Steve nor I would order them again.

Our appetizers followed shortly thereafter, though, and as always….we loved them all. While the pretty drinks were a bust as far as taste were concerned, our Zuppa Toscana and fresh bread sticks were heavenly :cloud9:. I could easily make a meal on those two items alone, and always have to be careful to enjoy them sparingly so I have room for my entrée.

Jake had opted to take a pass on the soup, and instead ordered a plate of his beloved fried cheese. While this is an appetizer he orders frequently at other establishments, it was a first for our Olive Garden visits. He and Steve were eager to see how their version matched up versus TGI Fridays or Chili’s.

Jake was quick to test the stretchability of the first piece, and it met (even, perhaps, exceeded) expectations!

Poor, sunburned Steve summed up his review of the fried cheese this way :p:

Smiles all around! The fried cheese was a hit :thumbsup2 (and maybe even a new Olive Garden favourite).

By the time the soup, bread and fried cheese were all devoured and the table cleared in preparation for our main courses, we wondered aloud why we even bothered to order entrees in the first place : we were already feeling full and our pasta dishes hadn’t even arrived yet. You would think we would learn from past experience, but apparently not :o.

Our entrees were tried and true favourites all around: Steak Gorgonzola for Steve….

….and chicken alfredo for both Jake and myself:

Absolutely, positively mouth-watering and delicious. The meats were flavourful and cut-with-a-fork tender, Steve’s steak was prepared to his exact specifications, the pasta was cooked perfectly, and the sauces were rich and creamy. While there was no way Jake and I could finish our plates, we had no hesitation in having the left-overs boxed up for possible late-night enjoyment either that evening or the next. That food was too yummy to go to waste.

Dessert was an impossibility :crazy2:. Much as the spirits might have been willing (that caramel lasagna on the menu looked heavenly!) the stomachs most definitely were not. We covered our bill ($63.33 including tax, tip was additional) and dragged ourselves back to the Residence Inn.

We were most certainly “done like dinner”, as my mom used to say.

I think we were all passed out cold by 10:30 pm, but that was quite alright with all of us…….tomorrow was set to be a busy, exciting day at SeaWorld, and our final full day in Orlando. Determined to make the most of our last day of vacation, we had the Behind the Scenes tour booked for the morning, reservations at Dine with Shamu for dinner……and unbeknownst to us at that particular moment, there would be a “dolphin tale” emerge in the midst of it all :fish:.

The first installment of our final day of fun in the sun :sunny: is next.

May is still considered "off season" for Orlando, which means no extended hours at the water parks. I am pretty sure they don't close until 7 pm once Memorial Day rolls around, and keep the longer hours right through until after Labour Day.

Steve and I are hoping to incorporate Longhorns in on our October plans, since we missed out in the spring. I have actually been tweaking our autumn trip itinerary a bit over the last few days.....over the weekend, I added an ADR for Trail's End for our arrival day (thanks to a hearty recommendation from @Inhislove and my Florida bestie :goodvibes). We're down to 115 days until the next adventure: fall trips always seem to roar up quickly. It must be because summer always flies by?

Oh dear, Poor steve looks so red! Reading about your water park day has me exhausted just thinking about it.

That poor guy burns just thinking about standing in the sun. Even with SPF 100 sunscreen re-applied liberally throughout the day (and a hat on for a good portion as well), he ends up crispy!!

Oh dang! We packed 15 and 30, but I only wore it about a day or two. Thankfully no one burned, but I guess we are lucky. Everyone worked on a base tan before hand.

It's so hard to leave room for dessert at Olive Garden! I actually managed to last time and got a delicious apple crostata but I saw that caramel lasagna too my aunt tried to convince me to get it so she could try a bite :rotfl2:

What a great day at Aquatica, you think it's going to be a relaxing day but somehow end up just as tired as been at the parks.

We too enjoy Trails End at FW and often go when we are looking round the decorations at Christmas or Halloween. The only thing I have found is that we have never been seated near the buffet, always down the steps, though I don't suppose a small walk hurts when eating all that food and you don't get as much traffic past your table!
