Oh, The Places We’ll Go! From the “stars” to the “sea”: Universal, SeaWorld & beyond - Spring 2016

I love that there were penguins in the elevator! Such a cute idea!!!

I'm surprised you got a table right away, as it seems like I always have to wait at the Olive Garden (regardless of the city, the day of the week or time of day. I once had to wait for a table at 9:00 on a Sunday night - seriously?!) But now I am totally craving Olive Garden breadsticks!

Well, OF COURSE that's it. What else would it be? :littleangel:
You do realize that 'winning smile' is code right?

We have St. Huberts in Canada? :confused3 I had no idea!

I have to say, the pocket lint one is especially interesting. Do you pronounce the "G"? ("guh-nurr" or just "nurr"?)

St. Hubert is in Quebec. While in the area we usual stay on the Ottawa side but there is a St.H right across the river. Maybe a 5 minute drive from the hotel we stay at.

I have no idea about that 'g'. I'm going to go with the silent 'g' theory.

Steve must be my brother from another mother. I can get a sunburn just by thinking about it. I go annually to a dermatologist to get the once over because my brother had skin cancer. She told me that the highest SPF necessary is 45-50. Anything higher is just a waste of money as it gives no further protection. The average person requires at minimum a 1/2 cup application and reapplication every 2 hours unless you are swimming or excessively sweating(then it's more often). Do I follow all that.....no, not really. I mainly avoid the sun as much as possible which is probably why I look so young. :rolleyes1

I was woefully behind but I am happy to say I was able to catch up this evening. I think if we stay at a Seaworld hotel for our next visit we would really like to try the Residence Inn. It looks great. I'm also thinking we want a cabana for our day at Aquatica in October. I love the park but I'm not much of a water slide girl so it would be nice to lounge and read a book while everyone else hits the slides over and over.

I couldn't believe how much Jake now looks like Steve back then in that photo you posted! Thanks for sharing the photo of your dad and Steve and Jake with us. :)I was happy to see Jake back to his cheese stretching ways as well!

I have big news...My parents very generously booked us all last week for a 10 night Caribbean cruise for the Christmas holidays (Dec 27th-Jan 6th). There are 11 of us going and we are beyond excited and grateful!!! This is an epic vacation year with Disney in May, Universal in October and now the cruise for the new year! That means definitely no Orlando for March break but I'm sure we will go back later in 2017.

Which Longhorn did you go to? Although, not gonna lie, I always get Texas Roadhouse, Logans Roadhouse, and Longhorn Steakhouse all mixed up (probably because I know an intersection on 192 where all 3 exist).

I feel like every Olive Garden around here ALWAYS has a wait. Maybe that's because I typically go on the weekends; and you'd probably never find me at the Palm Parkway one simply because tourist make it always "busy" (or never quiet).....

Great pictures of the park. We love Aquadica. Even when it was 62 degrees out. Stayed in Roa's most of the time, and used lots of towels. I'll have to see the price of the cabana for our December trip. I like the idea of having a more private place to hang.

Eh, I could just eat the Olive Garden salad and bread sticks. We rarely get a meal. We tend to order the soup and salad or some of the apps. Never seem to do dessert either. Ours is always busy too. Last time we went to the Longhorn near us, we thought the meals were okay, and the prices too high. It gets busy too, though.

Gosh, your last day coming up. Great report of your spring vacation.

Oh dang! We packed 15 and 30, but I only wore it about a day or two. Thankfully no one burned, but I guess we are lucky. Everyone worked on a base tan before hand.

Whenever we are in Orlando, its our running family joke that its easy to tell we're from Canada.....after a day in the Florida sun, we're sporting our official colours: red and white .

It's so hard to leave room for dessert at Olive Garden! I actually managed to last time and got a delicious apple crostata but I saw that caramel lasagna too my aunt tried to convince me to get it so she could try a bite :rotfl2:

One of these days, I'm going to take something to-go.....like that caramel lasagna ::yes:: (unless it has cream cheese hiding somewhere inside it.....then ew, no thanks!! )

What a great day at Aquatica, you think it's going to be a relaxing day but somehow end up just as tired as been at the parks.

We too enjoy Trails End at FW and often go when we are looking round the decorations at Christmas or Halloween. The only thing I have found is that we have never been seated near the buffet, always down the steps, though I don't suppose a small walk hurts when eating all that food and you don't get as much traffic past your table!

LOL, the extra walk would definitely do us good!! ::yes::

I think we will try and reserve a horse and carriage ride at the Fort for after our dinner....another friend of mine has also mentioned that the Halloween decor around the campground is absolutely worth seeing :thumbsup2. I am just trying to work out the timing so we can do dinner, the carriage ride, and the Electric Light Pageant all in the one evening. I would also have loved to have stopped by the campfire sing along to see Chip and Dale, but I think that's biting off a bit more than we can chew for one night!!

I love that there were penguins in the elevator! Such a cute idea!!!

That is the first time we've ever been to that specific OG that there wasn't a wait. I would suspect it was because it was fairly late in the evening by the time we arrived.....all the times we've arrived closer to the traditional dinner hour, its been packed. They even have a screen mounted on the wall in the lobby so you can see how far down the list your party is.

Well then, I guess I won't bother to scour the drug stores for the SPF 100 anymore (that stuff is painfully hard to find). I will need a fresh supply for our October trip, thinking positively that it will be sunny and gorgeous and that we'll need protection from those southern rays :sunny:. One of these days, though, I swear we are due for a wash-out trip, where we run no risk of a sunburn because it rains every single day of our vacation. The law of averages will soon be demanding it :umbrella:.

Aquatica cabana prices for October are super cheap......weekdays are only $49.99, and weekends $89.99. Compared to Disney's $345.06 for any day, any season, Aquatica's are the deal of the decade. Since they also include your locker rental, 12 bottles of water, and rental towels, the cabana itself is virtually free.

As for your big trip news, what an amazing and incredible gift from your mom and dad!!! That deserves a dance! I am so happy for all of you.....what an epic vacation year you have on deck!!!

We went to the Longhorns near the Premium Outlets on Vineland (probably mistake #1). Holy busy, Batman!!! It obviously says something about the food, though......its always a good sign when a place is packed to the rafters!

We have re-jigged the October itinerary to ensure we fit it in in the fall. We can always try a different location if need be.....I think there are several in the Orlando/LBV area.

Great pictures of the park. We love Aquadica. Even when it was 62 degrees out. Stayed in Roa's most of the time, and used lots of towels. I'll have to see the price of the cabana for our December trip. I like the idea of having a more private place to hang.

Thanks Lynne :goodvibes.

Oddly enough, there are no cabana rentals listed for December......which is weird, because we've been able to rent them on both of our Christmas week visits. I wonder if they are considering a reduced schedule for December? Or perhaps they are just slow posting pricing for that month?

Longhorn prices are super affordable compared to similar steak houses here in Ontario. But we find that with most restaurants......US price points are so much lower than here in the North. A Longhorns steak dinner is as cheap as a chicken entree here at home.....and usually the quantity is larger, too!!

Another pale pale person here. I'm of British/Irish descent as far back as we can trace. My dd went to the zoo a couple of weekends ago and reapplied her sunscreen twice and still ended up with a burn on her shoulders that was nuclear. It was tomato red :(. We went and got her better sunscreen (I have no idea what she was using) as they aren't all created equal. My uncle had skin cancer removed last summer and his dermatologist told him he highly recommends Ombrelle (and isn't paid to do so). It was something in it that he recommended (which I can't remember). We use a 45 lightweight Ombrelle lotion and reapply often. And we've just started being smarter about when to be out and how covered to be. Like dd, she can't swim for 3 hours no matter what the sunscreen is. She has to put a rashguard on after an hour or she's burning. It's crazy. Nothing can ruin a trip faster than a painful burn. My husband is Italian and he and my son tan and never burn. It's not fair lol.

Thanks for the tip on the Ombrelle :thumbsup2......we have been Banana Boat users thus far, so perhaps its time for a step up. I also agree with keeping covered....as long as Steve isn't sliding, he wears a hat at the water parks (we got a great one for him a few years ago at Discovery Cove......its his official "swimming hat") and someday I'll find him a rash guard in a mens XXXL. He's a big guy and HATES stuff super-tight so we've never found one that's large enough to fit him comfortably. Often he just wears a t-shirt but I'm sure he'd prefer the lighter, less-soggy rash guard.

Oh and Gina, I've never done the carriage ride at the Fort for Halloween but we did it for Christmas and it was wonderful! :)

Oh, my friend, that's my rubber arm you're twisting!! I was already 98% convinced to go ahead and reserve that experience for our arrival night (Steve thinks its a marvelous idea, too....and he was supposed to be my voice of reason!! :lmao:) and feedback like yours is going to push me right to the booking point! :teeth:

Honestly, in Disney's world of elevated pricing, I didn't think that $45 for a half-hour, private ride was unreasonable. Compared to the amphicars and Italian Water Taxis at Disney Springs (which a friend and I were chatting about last night.....they look amazingly fun but oh, the cost!!! :scared1:) they are really quite affordable.

Monday, May 2nd: our last full day.....and spent at one of our favourite parks: SeaWorld! :fish:

Getting up and going at an early-ish hour definitely gets more difficult as a vacation progresses ::yes::. Considering this was our final full day of Florida fun, we all wanted to make the most of it……until it actually came time to get out of bed :rolleyes2. Then, we all just wanted to SLEEP. It took a lot to fight through the weariness and keep ourselves on a decent schedule: the sun and heat and swimming and hectic schedule of the past 10 days had all combined to whoop our butts :faint:. But……we all were well aware that the vacation clock was ticking :hourglass. With limited time remaining, we had to make the most of this final day of Orlando awesomeness.

I got up first that morning, showering and dressing before I roused the guys. While they readied themselves for the day, I headed down to the breakfast buffet in the lobby and made myself a plate to take back to our room. I wasn’t feeling like being social just then…..I was licking my wounds and wanted to eat in private :sad1:.

Final day.

Vacation almost complete.

Over-tired.

Yep, I just wanted to eat alone :(.

As far as that buffet went, though, it was excellent :thumbsup2 (as we had remembered). Lots of choices, hot and cold….one of the best “free” hotel buffets we have ever partaken in. In addition to those enjoying their morning meal before they head to the parks, there were lots of people taking milk, bagels and spreads back to their rooms once they polished off their own breakfast plates….presumably for late-night snacks after busy day of family fun.

Once the guys were freshed and fed (they, too, opted to bring their breakfast plates up to the room……apparently we all had a little dose of melancholy :rolleyes1) we grabbed our lanyards, our dining and tour confirmations, and our vouchers for free Quick Queue (a perk of staying at an official hotel of SeaWorld) and we headed out the door. The Residence Inn SeaWorld is super close to the park, so we were driving up to a parking attendant and flashing our AP for free parking in literally a matter of minutes :car:.

SeaWorld must have known I needed a little pick-me-up that morning, because look who was waiting for us as we entered the park? :p

It’s impossible to be sad after a hug from Shamu. We all decided then and there that we were going to release any gloomy feelings and ROCK this final day of our epic family vacation . The sun was shining, the temps were on the rise, and we had enjoyed the most incredible trip together……with several more awesome memories to be made before this day was over. There would be nothing but smiles :).

The guys noted that they needed a bit of a breather before they partook in any vigorous coaster action: their sausage, eggs, pancakes and home fries were not yet digested, and well…..that was a fate we didn’t wish to tempt on Manta just yet :rolleyes2, despite that attraction being their customary first stop once inside the park gates. We all went together, then, to Guest Services to pick up our Quick Queue bands, check in for our Behind the Scenes Tour, and confirm our seating time for Dine with Shamu. With all the administrative work out of the way, we headed to check out some of the things we missed on our visit a week prior (had it really been a week?!?).

Even though it was just after 9 am, it was already getting hot :sunny:. Popping in and out of a few indoor attractions would help us adjust to the high heat that was expected as the day wore on. The Aquarium at Manta was the perfect start.

For those of you who have never been to SeaWorld (but who perhaps are planning a trip), I urge you not to bypass some of these little features within the park…..they are so worth a few minutes of your day. The animals are so wonderfully showcased in the aquariums! For non-riders of Manta and Journey to Atlantis, the two indoor aquariums are also a great place to pass the time while your other family members get their thrills on.

This specific aquarium features many of the smaller residents of the sea: colourful, tiny fish; sea horses, small sting rays, starfish, and more :fish:.

For a few of the exhibits, you really have to stop and look: what you see might surprise you. What may appear to be underwater foliage often turns out to be the most intricate of sea creatures in perfect disguise.

I love the fact that it’s so dark inside, because it just serves to highlight the amazing contrast of colours with the water, the coral, and the sea life.

There are also some great opportunities for kids to be part of the “display”…..like these clear tubes where you can pop up and get a truly “insider” view of the fish as they swim by.

With lots of time yet to fill before our 11:30 am tour, we headed over to Antarctica: Empire of the Penguin to see if the ride was open today (you may recall that it was closed on our other SeaWorld park day a week prior). Unfortunately, the sign was still out…..ride closed, exhibit open :headache:…..but we popped in for a quick visit with the penguins anyway. We were simply not destined to experience this full attraction on this trip!

None of my photos of the actual penguins turned out well from that visit: it was SO DARK in there that morning. The lighting was much more muted that we had ever seen it before. Perhaps this was why the ride was closed? :confused3 Were the penguins needing a darker, quieter environment for some reason? Were they perhaps nesting or laying eggs?

Once were through Antarctica, the guys decided their breakfast was sufficiently digested to give Journey to Atlantis a try. I toured the gift shop while they caught their first ride of the day. Steve was a little disappointed to see the enthusiasm of the fellow in front of him literally blocked his whole face from the ride pic .

Oh well, they will just have to give Journey to Atlantis another go later on in the day :thumbsup2. As if they need any justification or reason for a second ride ;).

Strolling back around toward Manta, Jake said he wanted to play the basketball game one last time on the trip. He grinned broadly at us and added “I want to try one last time to win that dolphin”.

Steve looked at him pointedly and said “Nope, not happening. There’s no way on earth we will ever get that thing home”. I laughed and said, “Oh come on, what are the chances of him winning it, anyway? How many other people have we ever seen walking around the park with one of those stuffies? He has to make 3 of 5 baskets, and it’s virtually impossible. Let him have his fun.”.

You would think, after 20 years of parenthood, I would learn that such statements are usually the ones that come back to bite me firmly in the behind :rolleyes1.

I think Jake took my statement as his personal challenge. After paying his money, the attendant provided him with five balls: one ball in the net would garner a small prize, three would yield the giant dolphin.

The first ball was nothing but net.

The second ball also made a nice little swish as it, too, went in. All of a sudden, it felt VERY hot outside .

When the third ball also made a perfect arc and into the hoop, I think I may have yelped right out loud .

The fourth ball rimmed out, but #5 also somehow made it perfectly into the net. Four out of five……this had to be some sort of cruel vacation joke?

Someone was so ridiculously proud of himself…….but we now had a whale of a problem. Never mind how we would deal with it at the park all day long, but how on EARTH would we get the dang thing home?

I'm Scotish/Irish. I inherited. The pasty, milky whiteness. Thankfully my girls got their dads Filipino skin. Both of them can get a tan with a 50 SPF.

Yes, another vote for Ombrelle. My dermatologist likes that and Neutrogena products.

Perhaps the sunscreen your DD used was expired. I've repeated been told to buy new ones every 6 months. Regardless of the expiration date on the bottle.

hehe, I always enjoy when the kids one up ya. Only time I did that when I was little, was the ping pong game. Put the ping pong ball in the glass bowl, you win a big prize. Yes, I still have that huge mountain dog stuffie.

Great pictures of the fish. Those aquariums are my go to also, when the kids ride the rides I won't.

Sorry that the penguin ride was not working. We've done the mild and wild, and neither was that awesome. Penguins though, are always awesome.

So ready to revisit in December. I might even sneak a day in October. I'll bring my pass just in case.

Dueling is legal in Paraguay as long as both parties are registered blood donors.
Does the Red Cross need to be standing by with buckets to collect their donation...?

Must be the Irish blood that causes sunburn. I'm mostly Scottish (with a bit of Brit and German) and would barely toast under a blowtorch sun - which I know makes no sense as Scotland is SO well known for its sunny shores. SPF 45 applied once in the morning (if I remember to), sun be damned. I spent a couple of weeks in Jamaica in my early 20's and have a pic with one of the locals on my last day. My legs were darker than his...
Funny story too. We ran out of sunscreen half way through the second week. Sunscreen is a US import there. Something like $20 a bottle. Wandered around the grocery store, and saw coconut oil. They put that in sunscreen right? Smelled fantastic putting it on. Later lying out in the sun, I started to wonder why I kept on smelling frying bacon...

Glad you guys rallied for the final day!

I've found the brand of sunscreen really matters. We are extremely pale and only use Coppertone Sport 50. I think it's water-resistant. Cream, not the spray.

How does that stuffed dolphin get home to Canada?!? :)
