Oh, The Places We’ll Go! From the “stars” to the “sea”: Universal, SeaWorld & beyond - Spring 2016

Why does that not surprise me at all? :rotfl:
Surprised that I love the dentist? I don't get why so many people are afraid of the dentist. Maybe I've just been really lucky and had the most amazing Dr's taking care of me:confused3. I had the same Dr from the time I was 4 until I was about 33. He was such a lovely man. His concern was you and the health of your teeth....never money. When I was first on my own(AKA young and poor)I missed a couple of visits and he called me to insist that I get in. No charge. I even had his home phone number. When he passed away I stayed with his partner who was equally as wonderful. They had been friends since dental school. He retired a few years ago and now I go to young guy. My current Dr and I had to come to an agreement but once we did things have been great. I will say I don't enjoy my visits now the way I did with my previous Dr's but those two were very special people. Never to be duplicated.

Friendly's was always our go-to for desserts after choir concerts in DeLand, but it has also been closed!

We just spent a week at Marriott's Cypress Harbour and focused on resort time. We did one morning at Sea World and the passholder preview evening for Mako (which was AWESOME). It was a wonderful and refreshing week. I totally recommend resort time! We were right next to the activities building too, and the staff there was great with our kids.

Great last day at Universal, and do nice to take a relaxing break. I can't say I've ever seen a Friendlys, although we must surely have passed one in all the years we have been going

When we go to IHOP for dinner we end up eating breakfast food. But isn't their breakfast food just like a plate of dessert really? :)

Great update. I'm so bad at working downtime in to the schedule. There is just so much to do, and so little time lol.

You have another Orlando trip planned by now, right? Will you be getting Universal APs again? I know the sadness of letting them expire!! I plan onsetting them again in September, and I can't wait! I am also excited they will be plastic this time!!

Sounds like it was a smart decision to get out of the heat!

I envy anyone who can visit the dentist without a little anxiety. I don't know why I hate it as much as I do....now in my early 40's, I've never even had a cavity (touch wood!)....and I've endured much worse as far as pain is concerned. Heck, I had a baby without so much as a Tylenol for the pain and a craniotomy while fully awake. The dentist should be a breeze (and to be fair, the practice at which I am a patient has the most wonderful dentists and support staff). But this is always what I envision.

I love Friendlys! We used to have them everywhere around here, but now there's only a few.

Oh no, not you too? :( I wonder is the franchise itself not doing well?

We have built in at least one full resort day at both Wyndham Cypress Palms and the Vistana in October. It will be fun to take in some of the various adult activities that are offered at each resort.....or do nothing at all, if we happen to be feeling lazy. We have several other vacation days that we also only have nighttime commitments, so we should be able to squeeze in a number of bonus pool afternoons along the way, too :thumbsup2. Hopefully the weather co-operates! :sunny:

There is one on International Drive, across from the Orlando Eye complex and just down a little more (toward SeaWorld, not toward Sand Lake Road). Definitely give it a try! And if you sign up for their email club before you go, you'll get a coupon for a percent off your first visit (I think it was 25%, if I remember correctly).

We have always been really bad at slowing down on vacation.....especially if we're only there a week. We just want to make every moment count, and there's always something new and exciting to fill in the pockets of free time. It's a sickness!! :o

Yes ma'am, we are all booked for October 14th to 28th! We have only done one other two week trip, and that was August 2014 with Jake and his GF at the time. This trip will be just Steve and I, although his one brother and his family (wife and three little kids) will be there for half of it. They are staying at the same resort we will be at, but in their own room and with their own rental vehicle. We'll do a few things together (probably a day at SeaWorld and a day at Aquatica) but the rest of the time we'll just meet for breakfast or dinner when we can.

Sadly, there will be no Universal AP's for us in the near future. The cost with the exchange rate right now is prohibitive, and the schedule for the fall is as full as I want it to be. We currently have two days planned for SW, two at Aquatica, two at Discovery Cove, two Disney Halloween parties, two dinner shows, and two dedicated resort days. We also have combo tickets to the Orlando Eye, Sea Life Aquarium, and Madame Tussauds, as well as plans to attend Oktoberfest in Celebration. We hope to renew our SW/AQ annual passes if they offer the BOGO offer again this Black Friday, but we'll defer re-purchasing Universal passes until at least 2017.

That must be the case we used to have them in every mall and another in almost every town. The closest now is about 40 mins away. I was never sure how they would do badly the ones around here we're always packed!

I cannot believe you have so much planned already!!! All I've done so far is make the Disney hotel reservations. I cannot decide where we are going to stay in Orlando for pre-Disney, what we're going to do or where we're going to eat. My family is all about "just let Ruthie decide". TOO MUCH PRESSURE!!! :crazy2::crazy2:

Well, shoot. That would be truly sad if that's the case. I may have to do a little Google research to see what I can find out.

While I think its a great place to dine, I'm not sure I'd drive 40 minutes especially to go there. But then again.....I do love their waffle fries.....:rolleyes1.

I adore the planning process, so I'm always usually thinking one (or even two!) trips ahead . Not only is October pretty much fully planned (with some wiggle room for tweaking and fine-tuning along the way, of course) but its also fully paid for. That's the best part of all! All attraction and admission tickets, water park cabanas, and even the park and fly hotel has been paid in advance. Those few items that can't be paid until during or after the trip (like the rental car and some of our meals) are all covered by cash in the bank (already converted to USD where necessary).

I was able to help my sister-in-law (the one who is coming down with her husband, who is Steve's brother, and their three little ones) get some great flight prices which made their trip possible, and now that our vacation is pretty much set I can focus my planning time on their requirements. It's a first trip for them and they are very grateful for our input.

Enjoy the fact that your fam trusts you so much to make great decisions for them! That's a pretty high compliment! :goodvibes

Friday, April 29th: continued (again)

Those of you who have read my trip reports from past vacations know that not only is mini golf a family favourite pastime, but also that Congo River is a favourite venue for that activity. We love the lush theming, the fun music, the challenging courses, and the fact that the course is always immaculately maintained. We adore the fact that they also have alligators and fish to feed, too ::yes::.

While we have golfed a lot of the courses in the area (in addition to the Congo River locations in both Orlando and Kissimmee, we have also played at Hollywood Drive-Golf at Universal, Hawaiian Rumble on I-Drive, Gator Golf on I-Drive, Pirates Cove on both I-Drive and at the Crossroads, and at Glow Golf in the Merritt Square Mall in Merritt Island), Congo River is the one we rank #1 of them all.

It was quite quiet at the Kissimmee course when we arrived, with just a scant few golfers playing mostly on the easier of the two 18-hole sides. When offered the choice of the easier or the harder course, the guys both quickly jumped on the chance to golf the more challenging side, especially when it was currently almost empty. Oddly enough, despite multiple visits to this specific location, we had always golfed the other side  …..so despite this being an old favourite, it was still going to be a somewhat new experience.

It was a spectacular evening to be out in the beautiful Floridian fresh air. The temperatures were now much more tolerable and the combination of the cheery music and beautiful scenery had all three of us in high spirits :p.

With putters and balls selected by all, it was time to get serious and get this competition underway. Bragging rights were once again on the line :snooty:.

I have to admit, I always get sidetracked with the scenery here more than the golf game. Perhaps that’s why I never win? :confused3 (well that, or because I’m not a very good golfer….LOL, that might be it, too! :rotfl2:)

Unfortunately for our Jake, the Congo Queen hole proved to be a bit problematic. Did someone say that golfing the more challenging course would be fun? :rolleyes2

Apparently we need to stop feeding that boy so much spinach, because a heart whack of the putter landed his ball squarely in the pond. Whoops :o. When that happened, I think the other guests could hear us laughing all the way back to the resort.

Steve was quite tickled by that turn of events. There may have even been a little gloating happening from the big guy :rolleyes1. But hang onto your hats, Steve-o … Jake planned to mount an admirable comeback :thumbsup2.

Me? Well, I golfed a great first 9 holes and succumbed to my customary second-half slide. If we were to golf a 9-hole game at any point, I may actually win once in a while!! :teeth:

The views from above :cloud9:.

Following the 18th hole, Steve set to calculating the scores while Jake and I checked out the resident gators. They were happily enjoying a swim on the warm spring night.....how's that for smart animals?

With the scores added up, Steve was pleased to know that Jake’s faux pas at the Congo Queen hole managed to secure himself the top spot of the night, but only by a hair. Jake was just barely a stroke or two behind, and quite happy to be labelled the Comeback Kid. As for me? Well, let’s just say I had a lot of fun. That counts for something, right? :p

By the time we turned in our putters, darkness was starting to settle in and we were finally ready for a nice dinner. We hopped back in the car, but didn’t have far to go……our restaurant of choice was just down the 192. Considering the day of the week, it was a rather fitting pick. Bet you can guess! ;)

The conclusion of our Friday is next.

It looks a lovely evening, perfect for golfing. Although we stay at Windsor Hills it is on the 192 West, so we don't often venture up to where the Congo golf is as it is in the complete opposite direction. Although my husband has been known to go to the Home Depot, which is that way ( I let him go alone!)

If you enjoy mini golf, you should definitely make a point of trying it out some time. The course is just beautiful and the atmosphere is so fun! :)

You are brave to let your DH loose in Home Depot all by his lonesome. My Steve definitely needs supervision.....LOL, he can always find lots that he likes there ;).

Friday, April 29th: the conclusion

So, I am sure a few of you figured out the reference :p. Dinner that Friday night was, very aptly, planned for TGI Fridays. We really like the Kissimmee location….the staff are great and the restaurant itself is newer and nicely maintained…..and as a bonus, it was close to Congo River.

The parking lot looks empty in that photo, but it’s a bit deceiving. While it wasn’t at all packed, it was moderately busier. Less busy, however, than we anticipated it would be…..especially for a Friday night .

We were seated immediately and greeted by our server for the evening, a young fellow named Darius who was just the sweetest, most eager-to-please young fellow we could have ever met. We could tell he was fairly new…..he was stumped by several of our questions about various items on the menu, and apologized sincerely about not knowing the answers to those queries off the top of his head, but he was quick to return with exactly the answers we needed in each case. We placed our beverage orders….a beer for Steve, a Coke for Jake, and Coke Zero for me….and perused the menu.

We attempted a photo, but it was dark in there…..and poor Jake was not expecting the flash :crazy2:.

We all like the atmosphere here: it’s casual and comfortable, a little on the noisier side but not so much that’s it disruptive or annoying. We also like the menu options, and all three of us (even fussy Jake and picky me) can find many things that appeal to our more selective palettes.

Since it was by now quite late and we were all pretty hungry, we indulged in an appetizer plate to share. We opted for three of our favourites from the “Pick 3” menu: boneless wings, fried mozzarella, and pot stickers.

Three thumbs up and rave review from our table on all items. They were hot, fresh, tasty, and on the table fast. It was also just the right amount as far as quantity was concerned: not so much that we were too full for our entrees, but enough that we were satisfied while we waited for the balance of our meal. A pretty decent value, too, at $12.40 for the 3-item platter.

Our entrees were not far behind. Soon after clearing away our appetizer plates, Darius was back with three hot, steaming plates in hand.

Jake had chosen the Jack Daniels chicken sandwich …. His TGI Fridays favourite … with no tomato, lettuce or pickles and a side of fries. He LOVES their fries .

Steve had picked the Smoke Stacked Burger with Caesar salad. It was a MONSTER! :scared1:

I had the parmesan crusted chicken with mashed potatoes and mac ‘n cheese:

Our entrees went over as well as….or perhaps even better than!....those yummy appetizers. The portion sizes were massive, and both the taste and presentation were fantastic. Darius continued to keep our beverages filled (Steve switched to water after his Bud Light was gone…..he was driving, after all) and we all enjoyed sampling each other’s meals. Both the guys especially loved my mac ‘n cheese…..I think you’ll be seeing them order that item themselves on future visits ::yes::.

We were all dying a little (of gluttony…..not natural causes) when Darius inquired as to whether we had room for dessert. We didn’t…..we were SO FULL .....but yet somehow, the word “yes” still managed to escape our mouths :rolleyes1. I think Steve would have forced down his beloved vanilla bean cheesecake if it killed him.

He was a bit disappointed that he forgot to ask for caramel sauce on the top, but still had a little sigh of pleasure as the first bite went down. This is his favourite cheesecake of all time, and while he loved his dessert at the Cheesecake Factory, it still retained its ranking above the CF slice in taste and quality.

Jake and I were near our breaking points as far as stomach capacity went, so we chose to share a Brownie Obsession: a warm brownie smothered in hot fudge sauce and topped with vanilla bean ice cream and caramel :cloud9:.

This is WAY bigger, WAY richer, and WAY more awesome than the picture suggests. It is easily large enough to share, and by the time we made it to the bottom of that skillet, we were super glad we had the good sense to order one and not two. One of those each and there would have been two of us carried out on stretchers in dessert comas :faint:.

Steve, of course, was stuffed but fine. That man has a stomach of iron :lmao:.

Our bill totalled $74.46 with tax. We left adorable and sweet Darius an excellent (and well earned) tip: he was poised to be a TGI Friday’s Superstar where service is concerned.

Back at the resort, we caught a quick soak in the hot tub and then headed to bed. We had a big day planned for Saturday, and a good rest was definitely warranted: tomorrow we would be breaking out of Orlando’s boundaries and heading to beautiful St. Petersburg :sunny:. The afternoon would be spent sailing the waters of the gulf (and hopefully seeing some dolphins!) while the evening would find us cheering on our Jays at Tropicana Field. Yet another sunshiny and unseasonably hot day was forecast, and we were regularly offering up little prayers of thanks for so many rain-free days. Much as it was much warmer than we had planned for, we'll take sunny and hot over rain and cool ANY day.

Stay tuned for our Saturday adventures :surfweb:.

I usually do enjoy the planning process. But it seems like there just isn't enough time to do it. We're driving, so I don't have to worry about prices of flights and restrictions on luggage (or extra luggage space for stuffies). I just need to find some dedicated time to search on-line for the right things that will work for our wacky traveling trio. Fortunately, the finances are already earmarked and ready to go once I make some choices. We've been saving for a while. When you're celebrating everything, you need the money to back your play!!!

I know you love TGI Friday's - have you signed up for their savings card? You can earn points for free food and such and each time you show the card you get free chips and salsa. You can easily sign up on line. You might be able to submit the most recent receipt to get credit for your dinner??

Some good food and good fun times together. We like Friendly's, it has had a bit of a makeover. They were sending 25% off for joining the email club too.

I am loving your trip report as usual! We were in Orlando all last week and one of the few things that I was looking forward to doing when we got home was catching up on your report. We went to the Superstar Character Breakfast also and it was a trip highlight for us as well. Universal really does that right. I felt really lucky that we bought our tickets in advance and still got in with the cheaper price.
