It takes great courage to venture into the unknown. It takes great strength to grasp the unknown and great wisdom to know when to let go of it. As hard as it must be, it seems as though you have made the right choice.
I sincerely hope and pray that you will now find some form of closure in, if nothing else, that you did all that you could. May God continue to watch over you and your family as you deal with your grief. May you find joy in your memories and may your smile return quickly.

C. Ann, So sorry you had to go thru this. You are alot like me, you analyze things to death! (no pun intended). Something good could still come out of this. I know it is a long stretch but maybe you could extend the olive branch to your ex B-I-L (I know what he put your sister thru, but hear me out!) Your sister left behind a daughter. Perhaps if your ex B-I-L thought you were "at peace" with the turn of events he would allow communication with you and your niece. Hugs!

Maybe if I - or someone else in the family - had tried a little harder to find her back then, the situation today would be different..

And don't beat yourself up over this..judging from all I've read on situations like this, I don't believe it would have been different. Women who are abused (even mentally, and not physically) still seem to be in love with their husbands, and still won't listen to their families...she prob would have just seen it as you trying to interfer in her life.

Sounds like you are going to start letting it go, and I think that's good for your health.
