Oh, Just A Few GALLONS of Pixie Dust! - A July/August 2012 TR

PORT ORLEANS FRENCH QUARTER.

It is so cute and quaint and charming and quiet and small and beautiful and and and and... sigh... I just love it! :goodvibes

The people just have always seemed so nice and friendly there! It's like an actual neighborhood!

Also, it was my first resort ever, so I have some pretty fond memories!

The food can be hit or miss, but those beneigts... can we talk?! OMG I want one NOW!

I can't wait to hear why your asking!!! ;)

Oh, and I'll go and read your update! :cool1:

I've stayed at CBR and POFQ:

POFQ, I have to say, we were not really that big fans of. Our room was...well...we'll go with well-worn. The atmosphere of the resort overall was nice, and the small size was a plus. We walked over to POR one night for dinner, and liked the walk along the river. Food-wise, we only had the beignets from Sassagoula Floatworks, which we both thought were pretty gross. (Sorry, fans of them!) After staying there, we both said that it was "ok for this briefer trip, but never again."

(Although if you're wondering about POR, we REALLY enjoyed our meal at Boatwrights, and from what we saw of the resort, thought the atmosphere there was really well-thought-out and nice - although it seems like a pretty large resort.)

I stayed at CBR several years ago, but from what I remember, I would recommend it over POFQ. The atmosphere is cute (it is larger than POFQ, with 4 bus stops), and the beaches are nice to relax on (hammocks!). The food court there has a fun theme, and I don't recall having any issues with the room.

I love Small World too! It's so relaxing, and it always makes me happy!

Those red card awards! :rotfl: I feel so special when I get one too!! I like to think I'm being awarded for something... I just haven't figured out what yet.

I have only been on Peter Pan a handful of times! It just always seems super crowded and not high on my list of priorities! :confused3

I wonder if they'll ever expand in the area of Splash and BTMRR. I'm sure there's space behind it or something, right? I can't stand the traffic there especially because Frontierland is the hottest part of MK, in my opinion. Howard said it's the material they use for the ground there that just automatically absorbs the heat and reflects the sunlight.

Okay, guys. If you haven't already thought of this, let me feed into your Disney obsession even more. Have you ever gone on map quest or google maps and looked at Disney World from satellite? It's really cool. The area beyond Splash and Thunder are surrounded by water. So, I couldn't figure out how they would expand. But, I guess that's the reason I'm not an imagineer. ;)

Marissa, I will definitely fill you in on Boardwalk Inn when we return. I'm not so great at getting good pictures, but there are some really great ones here.

LOOOOVE POFQ! I stayed there during October and it seemed quiet and relaxing. The CMs were always very helpful and pleasant as well:)

The room we stayed in was in building 4 (next to the main building) and was pretty standard. Mousekeeping did a good job at keeping our room clean and always left us cute towel animals.

The food is pretty predictable for a Disney foodcourt, except for the....BEIGNETS! Definetly had those fir breakfast once....or twice....:).

We also had wonderful luck with the busses, usually no more then a 10 minute wait. Its also nice having a boat available to take to DTD.

As you can tell, I'm in love with POFQ!

So far we have stayed at CBR and POFQ and would gladly return to either. Both are perfectly themed and transport you to another place.

POFQ is themed after the 'Quarter' or the heart of New Orleans/Mardi Gras. When we arrived there was a lovely gentleman CM to greet us by opening the doors for us and giving us Mardi Gras beads and coins.

The food court is meant to be like a warehouse storing/selling things for the Mardi Gras floats. Hence the decor that some consider over the top/scary. We found it cute. I did love the beignets. I used snack credits for them frequently. However, other food selection is limited compared to CBR/other mods. If you only plan to eat breakfast there, you'll be fine. Plenty of bagel, fruit, muffing type items available as well as the standard Disney breakfasts.

The grounds are lovely. Each building has it's own garden area with fountains and benches. Cute cobblestone pathways link the buildings. There is no where on the resort grounds that you can't walk to in under 5 minutes. There is absolutely no bad room location. Even the buildings on the river are mere minutes from the main building.

The gift shop is on the smaller side, but the CMs staffing it are superb. They knew Maddie by name by the 2nd day of our visit. When we inquired about them selling Jibitz for Maddie's Crocs, they took it upon themselves to call ever nearby store/gift shop to see who sold them (POR at the time). The gift shop has a very small selection of milk/snacks/alcohol compared to CBR though.

Our room was in good condition. It too was French Quarter themed. No special character touches other than the standard Hidden Mickey in the bed spread.

The best part is the bus stop. There is only one, and it was never crowded. In fact we never found anywhere at the resort that we considered crowded besides the food court at high noon. Buses came quickly, never filled up and we only shared with Riverside once (in the afternoon-non peak bus time) and that was in early August.

There is boat transportation to DTD which is really nice since the buses to and from there can be horrible. The boat ride takes a while, but you won't wait long for one. I didn't find the drivers to be nearly as friendly and chatty as the ones who drive the Epcot/DHS route or the ones who drive the MK/GF,Poly route, but that's really not that big of a deal.

The pool is fairly underwhelming (a very small slide is the only excitement), but depending on who you're travelling with that may not matter much.

We would gladly stay there again and again. I adored New Orleans and love the whole feel and vibe of the city, so I felt perfectly at home there.

CBR was fabulous as well, but very different. The tropical theme is also just right for me :goodvibes I adored the bright bold colors of the buildings, and the grounds are lush and gorgeous.

We were lucky to get our room request of Aruba 51 so we didn't have horrible walks, but if you stay anywhere but that building or one in Jamaica (unless you plan to pay for a preferred location) you may have quite a hike to Old Port Royal.

You check in at a building that's pretty removed from the rest of the resort, and to me waiting for the internal shuttle to take us to our building was torture! Once I'm there I want to get moving!

As I said we stayed in Aruba 51 (water view). I chose it based on it's proximity to the bridge that runs across the center of the resort. We were mere steps from that bridge. The landscaping along that path is stunning. Very island tropical.
The walk from our room to OPR was probably only 5 minutes, but seemed like less because the paths were so lovely.

OPR has many, many choices for lunch and dinner, and a huge grab and go selection. You'll not go hungry there. The gift shops are also in OPR, and they're quite large. We spent a great deal of time in them.

The pirate pool is huge, and was always crowded (in March). I never tried the slide, but it didn't seem much more exciting than the one at POFQ to me. Each 'island' has it's own pool and beach as well. We didn't get the chance to try our quiet pool (cheerleaders) but we did enjoy wiggling our toes in the sand. I'm sure that an hour or two in one of the hammocks would have been heavenly.

Buses can be tricky depending on what time of year you visit. The Aruba bus stop actually seemed further away than the OPR one to us (could be that you walk through a parking lot vs. the gorgeous grounds that made it seem longer though). We used the OPR stop exclusively and never had to stand on a bus. We carried our resort mugs in a back pack at the park, and filled our mugs on the way to and from the buses.

There was really something special about looking out at the lighthouse and the 'islands' in the morning. I was transported to the islands each and every time. It was such a relaxing way to begin and end our long days.

So yeah, I'd totally stay there again too. They're very different resorts-one small and quaint, one huge and bustling. But neither was bad.

Having written a novel, I have to say that I'm sure that we'll love staying at POR too. I too am quite certain that I too have some Scarlett O'hara in me, the mansion buildings should be a perfect fit. :goodvibes

Okay, guys. If you haven't already thought of this, let me feed into your Disney obsession even more. Have you ever gone on map quest or google maps and looked at Disney World from satellite? It's really cool. The area beyond Splash and Thunder are surrounded by water. So, I couldn't figure out how they would expand. But, I guess that's the reason I'm not an imagineer. ;)

Oooo, I didn't think of that! My husband has examined Disney a lot using Google maps and such, but when I do it, I seem to get lost moving from park to park, haha. I'm not very good at using it even when it's in my local area! Hmmm, it does make me wonder what their purpose was for putting those two so close together. I know it fits with the theme of the land, but I'm sure they anticipated the crowds, right?

About the moderate resorts, Marissa, I can't help you there as we've only ever stayed at 2 (AKL for our honeymoon borrowing DVC points and Pop, which is a lot more budget-friendly, haha). However, Howard and I always joke about staying at Coronado Springs because almost EVERY time we were waiting for a bus, we would see a Coronado Springs bus first!!!

I know I mentioned my love of Port Orleans to you on Twitter, but here are my additional thoughts on Coronado and Caribbean:

We stayed in CSR on our honeymoon, and LOVED it. The resort is gorgeous, particularly the giant body of water in the middle. It's also fairly large, but it didn't feel overly massive. Just avoid staying in the Ranchos section - that's the one that is farthest from the main building. Casitas, esp. Buildings 4 or 5 are where you want to be when you stay there. There are only two negatives I have about CSR - one is that for some reason, the bus stops there seem to have WAY more of the "love bugs" than any other resort we've been to. But, that's easy enough to ignore/avoid. The bigger negative were some of the convention guests. Our room was just outside one of the smaller pools, and one of the evenings, a lot of the conventioners got very drunk and being obnoxiously loud until about 4 in the morning. If we were to stay there again, I think we would just request to not have a room facing the pool, and it should be fine.

Caribbean Beach we only stayed in for a weekend, so we didn't have as much time to walk around an explore, but I just wasn't overly impressed with it. It's also the resort we've had the longest waits for buses, and there are no buses to the parks from the main building - you have to take the internal bus to another bus stop. Even the room just kind of felt "meh" to me.

And you've seen my Port Orleans pictures and I've told you how much I loved it. My favorite Disney resort we've stayed in so far!

I've stayed at CBR and POFQ:

Wow - I actually didn't realize you didn't like your stay at POFQ. What a shame. I will say though, when the interior of a room gets shabby it really does influence how you feel about a resort.

I think my favorite is POR. It was the first on site resort I ever stayed in and, I agree, it really is so well thought out! Love it!

We have differing opinions on most of the aspects of Port Orleans and CBR, but I am with you on this. Maybe it's because we've had beignets in New Orleans at Cafe du Monde, but we were so unimpressed by the ones at Port Orleans.

Sounds like y'all were definitely making the most of the day in MK! :thumbsup2 Sorry you missed meeting Frontier Donald but I'm glad you got to ride Peter Pan. Love that ride!

Sadly, I can't contribute to the moderate resort discussion. I've never stayed at any of them, but they all look so different and unique, that if I did ever stay at one, I'd choose based on theme. If that makes sense? Ugh, pregnancy brain, I can't type what I'm trying to say. :rotfl2: Basically, if I was going in the summer and wanted a "vacationy" feel, I'd stay at Caribbean Beach. If I wanted a relaxed, easy going trip, I'd stay at Port Orleans. If I was going with just adults planning on a more sophisticated trip, I'd go with Coronoda Springs.

Anyways, I just came to reply to your latest update. :rotfl:

It took me a long time to ride Peter Pan's Flight, as well (like, 3 trips) but I was so happy when I did. It's a great dark ride, and just the whole change in concept of having the track above your head versus on the ground is incredibly neat. Glad you were able to go on it (without the normal 60 minute wait:sad2:) and had a good time.

I've never noticed all the hearts on IASW before. I'll have to keep my eyes posted for that next time.

We love POFQ. It's small so after a long day there's never a long walk to your room, and the lines waiting for the bus at the parks are relatively small compared to the others. And most importantly beignets!!

Just arrived to this TR so this is prob way past the point, but say whaaat at that AMAZING VIEW!!! They picked the best people to bestow that upgrade on I think, b/c you enjoyed it to its fullest extent! I loved all the detailed pics of the view and suite so I could live vicariously through you.

I also loved reading about your observations of other guests; WDW is really infinitely entertaining in terms of people watching. My eyes practically misted over when I read about the Irish father who said "Much fun is to be had today, everyone." Adorable! It reminds me of when I saw a French family w/ a little girl on a bus to the Contemporary and the girl was exclaiming in French how much she loved her new Ariel doll. Her parents reminded her that no one was allowed to speak French on that trip so she could get better at English. I need to do that in DL Paris immediately, however I'd prob be practically mute since my French is so bad haha.

I'm totally going back to read your old TR- so hilarious! Looking forward to the conclusion!

OMG, I'm SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO sorry Marissa I haven't commented in forever. I feel awful considering I always get you into these lovely convos on Twitter and yet I never have the same amount of time for a TR, but... I'm here now! And... it's ending. WAH! Well I've really enjoyed this TR all the way through even if I've been in-and-out for most of it. I hope you get to go back soon so I can read more of these wonderful TRs. I also kinda need your description of your love for Splash Mountain because you honestly get the "SPLASH MOUNTAIN LOVE" so perfectly. EEEPPP!!

Speaking of "going back soon", check out my siggy!

Can't wait to read more! :mickeyjum

Hey, yall! Thank you so much for your input on Moderate resorts! (And I completely apologize for taking so long to actually respond... :rolleyes1) I really appreciate your thorough comments, more than I can say! That being said, I wanted to apologize upfront because my comments are going to pale in comparison! But just... thank you very much!!

We stayed at Port Orleans Riverside on our last trip for a few nights, and I fell completely in love with it.

I loved how the grounds were so beautifully themed, that there was so much to do right at the resort (i.e numerous swimming pools, walking trails, carriage rides, movies on the lawn), the boat ride to downtown disney was awesome, and also the food court is truly in my opinion one of the best on Disney property.

I can honestly say that I truly love it there :)

That sounds so amazing! I think it's my top choice for a Moderate! Thank you for your input!

I'm completely useless when it comes to the moderates. My only experiences with them have been driving around inside Coronado Springs and our quick visit to POFQ last year. They both look cool though. haha

Hahah that's totally okay! I am too. I mean, I haven't even set foot on the property of ANY of the Mods! I've been in the front drive of Coronado Springs on the Magical Express a few times... does that count?! Haha just kidding. Thanks for your response though!

First, LOVE the Small World photos! I really (really, really) like that ride, even though I get eye rolls from my family when I say so! So glad you finally got to ride Peter Pan...it's a classic!

Now, you know about my great love for POR...it's my favorite moderate because it's beautiful and there's a LOT of stuff to do there but also because in a former life I'm pretty sure I was Scarlet O'Hara, so it feels like coming home to me. :rotfl: It was recently renovated, which is nice, and the royal guest rooms are awesome! Having said that, the resort is HUGE, and the food court is ka-ray-zee busy most of the time. POFQ is also very beautiful, is smaller and quieter...and there are beignets! The boat ride to DTD from either resort is wonderful!

I've also stayed at CBR, and it was OK...the pool area is great and the grounds are gorgeous, but the rooms need some serious sprucing up.

Aww, thank you! I know, it's such a wonderfully classic Disney ride! If you're going to get the song stuck in your head, you might as well just make the most of it! Oh I know, SO glad I finally rode Peter Pan! It's wonderful!

Thank you so much for your input on the Mods! I really appreciate it. I have to say, your TR has me really getting into the idea of staying at POR! I really think that is my top Moderate choice!

I know! Oh yes, we're definitely being rewarded when we get them. It's a fact. Totally. Yeah.

I know, it always is VERY crowded there! I was so glad that it finally WASN'T, because that meant I could ride it! YAY!

Um, all your pictures are SO pretty! Thank you for sharing them! And I definitely didn't know that about the busses at CBR... interesting! Again, my comment is so lame compared to your awesome response, but I really appreciate it so much!

Love it!

Hahha, I think I just said the same thing! So funny! I totally didn't realize that either.

Aww, your first? That's so special! I really think that is my top Moderate choice! Thanks for your input!!

We have differing opinions on most of the aspects of Port Orleans and CBR, but I am with you on this. Maybe it's because we've had beignets in New Orleans at Cafe du Monde, but we were so unimpressed by the ones at Port Orleans.

I really want to try SOME beignets! I honestly didn't even know they were a thing until I saw Princess and the Frog in theaters a few years ago! Ever since then I've really wanted to try some. I've even been to New Orleans... but never even heard of them when I was there! So crazy!

Sounds like y'all were definitely making the most of the day in MK! :thumbsup2 Sorry you missed meeting Frontier Donald but I'm glad you got to ride Peter Pan. Love that ride!

Hahha well, we tried! Thank you, it's totally okay. I love Donald, no matter what outfit he's wearing!! Hahah. I know, I'm so glad I finally got to ride it! It's so adorable.

That's totally okay! Yeah, I mean I have opinions on each of them from the research I've done and from what I've seen on here, but I like to hear personal experiences on them! It's totally okay though, I get it! Yes, that makes sense! Hahah don't worry!

Oh weird! Yeah, it took me four trips! It's crazy, but that ride really does ALWAYS have a long line! I'm so glad that we finally caught it at a slower time!

Yeah girl, be on the lookout! It was so interesting to me too!

Great pics! :)

Thank you so much!!!

We love POFQ. It's small so after a long day there's never a long walk to your room, and the lines waiting for the bus at the parks are relatively small compared to the others. And most importantly beignets!!

Oh, that sounds awesome! Hahah so you like them, huh? I really want to try some! Thank you for your input!

Aww, you are NEVER too late to join in here! Thank you so much for all your sweet comments! Yes, that view was just out of this world! I really miss that view, I must say!!! Haah! Aww thank you! We were so glad that they chose us for the upgrade, too! It was so amazing! We still talk about how wonderful it was!

I agree, people watching is too much fun. OH YES, that was the cutest little family! My heart melted when he said that! ADORABLE. Your story was so cute as well! That must have been too precious! Hahah well, I'm sure your French would at least be better than mine! I'm pretty sure I just know 'bonjour.' OH, and thanks to Friends, I also know, "My name is Claude." BAHAHA.

AHH well thank you so much for your amazing comment and for reading my TR! I really, really appreciate it, but I also wish I had seen this comment sooner so I could warn you about my 'incident' on that trip hahaha. I hope you enjoyed that one too though! Thank you again!!!

:mickeyjum

Timmy, I promise, you don't have to apologize! I COMPLETELY understand! Never fear! There are still... three (?) more updates and then the wrap up and... maybe something else? Ya never know! So don't worry, it's not over yet! You didn't completely miss it. HAHA.

OH YES! Splash is the best!! I will never stop adoring that ride!

YAY!!!! That is so exciting, Timmy! You've been waiting too long for this!

*sigh* That's a relief! And I still need to watch your videos too. I love trip videos! Going to actually do a lot of filming when I go to NYC. Btw, not seeing Mary Poppins there... It is closing this month in NYC. I literally wanted to cry especially since I found out through a friend and it was so sudden. But we are seeing Once, which I wanted to avoid but I will take. Maybe I will go back to see Newsies this summer or Book of Mormon to make me feel better lol What did you think of Mary Poppins, I saw a tweet but I glazed over because I was in a really bad mood OH ME!

Yeah! I am so excited and I may go to Cali and DLR this summer so bonus! And I am trying to maybe do TWO trips or an extended trip since I want to go to Universal and WWOHP as well as stay at AoA or maybe a deluxe like the Poly. I just have to be patient since I know everyone is sick of me talking about Disney (and I am sure this comment is about to go into the record books too) so I am hoping either this summer when we discuss my Senior year and everything after, that will fit in. We'll see!

And from what I hear you may going back too! I will have to check back in the TR about the deets on that. Heard about something with the Moderates. I haven't stayed at any of them but for awhile I really wanted to stay at POR and it was actually a top choice for my now defunct 16th birthday trip. It has boats to DTD and just sounds like a really nice with the princess rooms there. And I think you can get beignets there... Well, there's my two cents on that, will have to look back to see what I missed there lol

Hahah well as you know my trip videos aren't anything special, just a bunch of random clips. But I SWEAR that one of these days I'm going to make a real video! I just enjoy watching them too much not to do one myself! UMMM, you absolutely must see Newsies! I'm dying to see it! I really need them to do a tour though. Mary Poppins was honestly AMAZING. I was blown away. It was perfect (not just practically perfect)! It's such a shame that you can't see it in New York, but I bet you could catch it on tour one of these days!!!

It would be so amazing if you went to Disneyland! So cool! I'm planning on doing a split stay on my next trip. Most of the nights would be at a value (most likely Pop, because I could probably get a discount on it and haven't stayed there yet!) and a couple nights at either a deluxe or a mod. It would be a great money saver! Anyways, hope the planning goes well!

Hahah don't worry, between my TR and twitter, I got PLENTY of great responses about Moderate resorts. Thank you though!
