Oh dear

I don't think they I would want to work the company that "accidentally called" To me that doesn't say much about them.

Off to work in an hour, wish me luck. I am not going to quit, but if they fire me, then heck Ill have the holidays off. ANd more time to prepare for my interviews. I want to quit so bad, but I need the paycheck.
Don't quit! If they fire you, you will probably be able to collect unemployment because they did not fire your "for cause".

My guess is that they won't fire you because otherwise they won't have their holiday slave labor :rolleyes1.

:hug::hug::hug:

ETA: I agree with happygirl. I would think hard about taking the other job. You may be out of the frying pan and into the fire.

Oh boy, I hope it isn't too bad for you. Hang in there. I am so glad you are looking. I was in a job that I hated FOR YEARS! can't believe I wasted all of that time. finally got the courage to leave and LOVE the job I am in right now.

Keep us posted, and good luck!

I get this, but somewhere along the line the OP said "yes" to all of those conditions....

As for the other job -- if it pays less than what you want, DON'T TAKE IT. Tell them, thank you, but that's not adequate compensation for the job you want me to do. Stop just accepting what people give you without pushing back.

:earsboy:

I rarely remember people and posts together, but as the OP said in response to you, she had relocated. From what I recall of an earlier post of hers, it was only THEN that she found out how different it would be. And from what I recall, she got the good end of it; the others hired at the same time were then told they were only *possible* employees, or something like that!

This is not a place I will stay, especially now that I see how high the turnover and burnout rate is. Plus I am working some nights and some days, and it is making me a zombie. I cant do both!

It terrifies me that hospitals treat their employees so horribly. I have very little trust in western medicine as it is, and knowing that the people who are supposed to be awake and alert while helping those who are in trouble just makes me even more frightened. I hope you can find a decent place to work soon.

Any update on the offer letter?

My first job out of nursing school stunk but it wasn't a good time for new grads. I worked days, evenings and nights, whichever they needed and it could be any combination each week. It was all over the place and after 6 months I applied at three hospitals, none of which had called me when I sent my resume right after graduation.

All three that had ignored me just 6 months prior called me for an interview and I got offers at all three. Hang in there, you will get something.

Your holiday schedule isn't uncommon for a brand new nurse just on the job, probably by next year it would be better. It's only the first one that you usually get stuck doing all those holiday shifts.

So you're a new nurse working in a hospital and the position you ended up with wasn't the position you were promised. So you're looking and one of the new places ratted you out accidentally to your current employer.

This will probably be a blessing in disguise.

Let me give you some advice, from an "old' hospital nurse (27 years...that's working, not my age! ;)):

1. Try not to seem rattled even if you are
2. Your director who "wants to talk" is probably going to start by telling you how disappointed he/she is that you are thinking of leaving so soon after you started. Rest assured they are disappointed that they will have to be training someone new again so soon after they thought you were a "done deal". They couldn't care less about you personally.
3. Your director will then go on to say that it's not going to look good on your resume to have such a short employment. That's not true. It only doesn't look good if you have multiple short employments. One short employment in an otherwise fairly stable career can easily be explained by "not a good fit professionally and the only fair thing to do was not allow the employer to put a lot of time, effort and money into me".
4. Your director may (or may not) ask you why you are considering leaving. That would be the time for the "airing of the grievances"...not promised shifts, not promised pay, lousy holiday schedule (and that is a lousy holiday schedule), lack of support/mentoring...whatever they are, be ready to list them...you've got their ear, might as well use it if they ask.
5. Don't believe them if they say they'd like to work with you to compel you to stay. They do not want to compel you to stay. They do not want to work with you. They want you to stay through the holiday season so everyone else on your unit doesn't have to suck it up and cover your lousy holiday schedule, but believe me, on January 2nd they will be looking for a reason to fire you.
6. If this new job seems reasonably good and the pay is "do-able" I would recommend taking it, because your current employer will be gunning for you now that they know you are unhappy. If the pay is not "do-able" then step up your job search, because your time with your current employer is limited. Perhaps you can squeeze a bit more $$ out of the new job offer???
7. If you take the new job, try and stay at least a year, so it doesn't look like you are going to be hopping job to job every few months....see #3 above.
8. Do not believe a word anyone from Human Resources tells you. Human Resources is not there to help the employee....they are there to protect the institution. You are an employee, another number, that is it. They don't care about you in any way other than how you impact he institution.

Good luck...and remember, it's your job, not your family. If they yap about being a family, you are not a family. The moment you screw up or they can cut you loose they will, and they won't be worrying about you....so don't worry about them.

PM me with any ????s.

I ditto previous poster.

I was at my first job for under a year, my schedule was insane and I just wasn't happy. I switched and stayed at my next unit for 10 years. Sometimes change is good.

If you want to look for a new job you're allowed to do so, it's a free country. My first job wasn't happy at all when I left either in under a year, but I never would have done so if I was given any sort schedule that didn't leave me super exhausted. Like I said, I worked days, evenings and nights, possibly all in one week and was just all over the place again and again. My next job I had to go back and forth at times at the beginning, but it would be a month at a time.

sorry to hear you are going through this! i only ever worked retail but for five years it was at walmart and i hated it all! my last 2 retail jobs were much better.

i can see op's point of lack of jobs for new nurses...i remember when i was graduating many of the us hospitals coming up here to offer canadian nurses their jobs. it caused a huge shortage here and the money was better for them to go there than stay here.

I havent been loving my new job, for those of you that have seen my prev posts. They job I was offered is not the job I got and the pay is lower and instead of days I was put on nights due to staffing issues. I have been interviewing and looking elswehere. I have been checking off the "NO" in the "May we contact your current employer" box and for explanation I have explained that I plan to give adequate notice but have not told them I am leaving yet. Well yesterday I had an interview that went really well. She asked me about my current job, I explained in simple terms, not a good fit, will tell them when I plan to leave. Well she called me today and apologized profusely for having called them. She said it was an accident and that they were very upset to hear I was looking elswhere. She said they were checking dates & references and her assistant accidentally called the one I had checked NO to. She told me to be prepared that they are understandably upset. While I appreciate her calling to warn me, I have to work tomorrow. Ugh. It is going to be a difficult day tomorrow I am hoping I dont get fired. On the other hand, the other place seems to be prepared to make me an offer but it appears as though it will pay much less than what I make now. UGH. And I do not have the offer in hand yet. I am so frustrated. This will be the icing on the cake for a job I already dread.

They didn't do this on accident. Nice of her to warn you, but a bitter pill to swallow if there is no offer. Sending good wishes.

I disagree, I think it was by accident otherwise the employer had no reason to no tell you that if you are interested in this job they will be contacting your present employer. Accidents do happen, and this one is easily possible.

My df thinks this is her way of getting me to accept her lower offer. She had mentioned that their offer will be lower than what I currently make. Our conversation today ended with " I am so sorry, I have never had this happen before, but you will have something in writing from us by Monday at the latest"

But she sounded sincere and embarrased. I dont know this is what I get for being honest, I was going to leave my current job off my resume and not tell anyone about it since I have only been there a few months.

That is a huge amount of paranoia. I don't think that any company, especially in this economy, will go to that degree of effort to hire someone that they don't even know.

As for leaving off your current employer in your job history...not a good idea. At some point they will find out that you worked someplace else and didn't tell them and all of a sudden you have been caught falsifying your job application. A very heavy duty reason to let someone go. Honesty is always best and frankly you don't know for sure if them knowing will even be a negative for you.

No kidding. I'd say "Of course I'm looking. You offered me one job and gave me another. You offered me one pay rate and gave me another. You offered me one shift and gave me another. What on earth makes you think I'd be happy with you?"

Words to that effect...not necessarily with the attitude attached, is a very legitimate reason for looking for something else. My singular advice...never burn your bridges.

I relocated here for this job offer, and signed a lease. So I am stuck with it until I find something else. That doesnt mean I accepted their crap, it means I am taking it until I can find something better which will be sooner rather than later. Are you one of those evil HR people that makes all the promises & then doesnt deliver? Because from your post I am guessing you are.

I have 2 interviews next week and I did recieve 2 more messages from the job that sold me out today, an apology vm from the assistant and another from the interviewer stating that the offer letter will be in my inbox by close of business, which I think is 5pm?

Off to work in an hour, wish me luck. I am not going to quit, but if they fire me, then heck Ill have the holidays off. ANd more time to prepare for my interviews. I want to quit so bad, but I need the paycheck.

NPmommie- New grads dont have much bargaining power these days, but I am def going to counter offer if the offer is too low. I think the quality of life at the other job would be better, but the commute will be tough. Id rather make less and be happy, but I still need anough to pay the bills.

As much fun as it is to blame HR, remember that they take their direction from the top. Blame those that really are to blame. (No I am not HR)

New grads never ever had much bargaining power. Like it or not there is a "pay your dues" part of life. That is something that our parents forgot to tell you when they were saying how special we were.

Got the offer letter! It is a lot less money but starts with 5 weeks pto whereas now I get one. The insurance & beneftis are WAY better. And the quality of life will be so much better! I do have 2 more interviews next week so I am on the fence. How long is acceptable to consider an offer? I am going to counter and ask for a little more money and see where that goes, she basically told me to "try" when she called me about the offer letter (which btw came after 6pm)

DisneyDoll- you called it! lol. Haha she said all of those things, how dissapointed they are, how they want to work with me to make it better. The whole this wont look good on your resume bit. I wish I read your post before I went in, I would have giggled through her whole speech. I told her days or nights, not both. She said there is nothing she can do until they hire & train more staff and she mentioned the holiday schedule several times. I think you are spot on with the after Jan 1 thing. I hopefully wont be there to see.

I dont mind paying my dues at a new job, but I will not be taken advantage of and this is not the deal we made when I took the job. There is a reason the turnover is so high and none of the staff stay. Experienced nurses leave during orientation, us newbies are the ones that try to stick it out until we realize it is a mistake. Not worth risking the license I worked so hard to get, the staffing levels are dangerous. if they didnt lie to get us in the door and promise us the moon, they woudnt get anyone to work there.

See bolded

The two things you mention as being better (PTO & insurance) do have a monetary "value". And the quality of life will be so much better! Also important. I do have 2 more interviews next week so I am on the fence. How long is acceptable to consider an offer? You have a little leeway with Thanksgiving in the mix, but don't leave them hanging too long. I am going to counter and ask for a little more money and see where that goes, she basically told me to "try" when she called me about the offer letter (which btw came after 6pm). Doesn't hurt to try. ;)

No, I'm not. Have never worked in HR. Sorry. Although I do feel as though I've been insulted, if that helps. :goodvibes

Good luck! (Just a hint ... don't ask the person making the offer if they're "one of those evil HR people that makes all the promises & then doesnt deliver." They may not take it well ...)

:earsboy:

I've got a little time to consider the offer, the person I need to get back to is off this week for the holiday. Two interviews this week wish me luck!
