i sent it back, now they want me to send the body so they can "fine tune it with the lens" which in no way will i ever do considering they totally messed up the lens( 28-135).( do i really sound that stupid???) i told the guy i didn't want to send in the body since they had already messed up the lens and the body is working fine with all my other lenses. he got kind of offended( what, you don't know what they did was lousy?) he claims they looked at the photos i sent( then they have blind techs and couldn't tell the difference and took some photos with the body they have and it is fine...bull. i told him if it's fine why is it so soft i can't even use it now. he seemed surprised but said they will set it again to factory specs and send it back which i am guessing means they won't do anything .

other than just shipping my lens back again and again till it is lost in the mail( which might be an improvement since i 'd at least get money for it), any suggestions? if they aren't going to fix it i feel kind of unethical selling it when i know it stinks

i'm guessing 7 months might be to long. I got it at J& r so i guess i can see what their policy is.

The 7 month time period is not a good fact.

J&R, as merchants in goods of the kind, have warrantee burdens that you and I would not, however, there is an obligation on the part of the buyer to give timely notification that the goods received were non-conforming.

I'd give them a call and see if they would be willing for an even exchange.

I wrote canon and told them since they sold me a defective product ( due to the is and motherboard malfunction) they evidently can not repair they need to refund my money. i don't really see that it is J&Rs problem since the lens worked for 5.5 months, it's canon's lousy repair or quality control issues

Ahh, I missed that part of the story. It's working for the first 5 months is very different -- it is then most certainly not a non-conforming good. Presumably the warranty extends beyond that, and so Canon should either:
  • fix it
  • replace it
  • refund your money
All of those remedies would be currative, and they should be allowed to choose.

i just talked to them...they said they'll be shipping it back and if it's still not satisfactory call back and they'll go from there...maybe UPS will drop it or lose it:) I just find it irritating they can "choose".. this has not been working for over 4 of the 7 months i have owned it,( i first noticed a problem in Oct of it not working "right" ( i thought was low light conditions and since i hadn't used it for long figured it was the nature of the lens and just switched lenses when it wouldn't work...till it got to where it wouldn't work at all...)they have been " checking/repairing/in transit" going on 6 weeks( sent it in the first time jan 24th) and it still isn't working and i haven't had a lens to use. so basically i spent $130 a month for the 3 months i had a lens that worked.

I hear you. Unfortunately, as customer service nightmares go, this one is pretty mild. They are engaged with you and seem to be trying to remedy the fault--you have no idea how far ahead of the game that puts you.

I wouldn't hold too much hope out for a UPS sanfu--now if it had been shipped via US Mail...:confused3

I was thinking about getting this lens, and I've read about certain serial numbers having defects, would this apply in your case?

hadn't seen that..could you point me to a list?..right now it's in the box somewhere between here and nj but i would like to check once it gets back. i know the 70-300 some had problems putting it in portrait( or was that landscape?:confused3) but hadn't heard anything about the 28-135

Doh, sorry, I think it's the 70-300 I'm thinking of. I'm still leaning toward this as a general walk-around lens but keeping the 18-55 in the bag if I need to go wider.

I hope they get yours fixed!

::smirk:: I love it when companies say silly things like that. Send me a PM if they don't get it right this time, and I will suggest other approaches to the issue. :thumbsup2

Hey Paul, Whitey Bulger can't help in this situation as he is on the run from the FBI, unless of course you know where he is!!!!!

Or do you know some other Boston Irish Mob guys from Southie. :rotfl2: :lmao: :rotfl:

I'm absolutely convinced that 20 years from now we will learn that Whitey Bulger was living on the top floor of a three family walk up in Arlington Heights -- probably just upstairs from Osama Bin Laden.

Wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find him listed in the phone book. :crazy2:
