I know I saw someone carry a beer over the finish line last year. The announcers commented on it.

What did they say?

Goofy #20512 for me (Corral A)! Submitted marathon time of 3:26 fwiw.

My wife is #41315 (A) with a submitted time of 1:50 for a 1/2, and my sister is #44268 (C) with a submitted time of ~1:05 for a 10k. Though my wife will be dropping back to run with my sister.

So, should I continue to be selfish and run my own race? Or drop back with my brother in law? I am fearful that if I start in H, I won't finish.

I am a firm believer in always running your own race, even when running with friends and training partners. In this case, since you're worried about the time limit, start in your corral. If he's that much faster than you, he can probably catch up within 6-8 miles.

Something along the lines of "I believe someone made a side trip to Germany!" Certainly wasn't bad.

I agree, run your event. He will catch up, just make sure he knows what you are wearing so you don't get lost in the crowd or tell him you will be on a particular side doing your pace thing.

I'm completely torn here! My placement is G for the full. I now have a 2:44 1/2 time I can submit that might move me up from what I am seeing on here. I would love to have more padding from the sweepers as training has not gone well lately (my oldest has the flu and my motivation has dwindled). My dilemma is that my brother in law is doing the Goofy and is H (I have no idea how - he is much faster than that - it must have been how my sister registered him). He was planning to run with me. I have NEVER been able to run a race with someone, but have tried several times. I must be selfish, I need to run my race.

This is a local race for my brother in law. He works for the Mouse.

I agree that we all need to run our own races. Especially if one has not trained week in and out with the other. I have run a few races with folks on the forum and we always start the race with a hand shake and a promise to each other that it is ok for the other to leave if they need to.

I agree that since you are worried about your pace to start, pushing backwards is not going to help the pre-race corral jitters you will be feeling. Then, he more than likely at some point feel like he may need to push on. Talk with him and see what he says. More than likely he will say stay where you are at.

I am facing the same this year as my brother has (or hopefully will) made it to the race. He is 3 corrals behind me. While I am thinking of falling back, I know that after we hit the pack post MK I will naturally start to bob and weave and may never see him again. We will discuss strategies Saturday over dinner.

No long runs since November 11th (half marathon) until today. By the grace of God, I did 10 miles in 2:30. Yay! 15 minutes per mile:cool1:. The crazy thing is my Garmin said it had a low battery when I was finishing my first lap (It was 1.42 miles). I didn't want it to just cut off mid-run so I went ahead and cut it off and finished sans Garmin. I deliberated just packing it up and going home but I felt good so I just lapped to 9.94 and then turned my Garmin back on to do the last .06. I figured my time would have suffered because I am so used to relying on it but I guess I was just more relaxed and not as worried about it. It was actually *gasp* enjoyable. I really liked my walk/run today:goodvibes!

I have 20 and 10. Then Marathon!!!!!!!!!!:dance3:

I finished my 20 mile run!!!! The thing that had been frightening me since August, looming in the distance like dark menacing storm clouds and it turned out to be nothing terrible. I mean, it was incredibly boring and the whole time I just wanted it to be over, but now it is!

Then I got back to my apartment building to find out the elevator was out of order and I had to go up 6 flights of stairs. No one was around to hear the awful, terrible things I had to say.

Congratulations! And ouch. I do mine next weekend and then it's taper time. I will finally feel like I am all caught up from my one month sideline if I can do it. I am confident that I can. *I think*

Congrats on the run. That is a great mental and physical milestone.

rocio You and I are in the same boat. I am going to try and do 20 next weekend. That would be a big comeback from a 3 month layoff--my last 20 miler was in August. Good luck!

Honestly, we should all lose the garmin, the iPod and any other aid we have on a regular basis. There is something therapeutic about just "goin' for a run"

You guys CAN do it. I just thought of it in 5 mile increments and kept resetting my garmin for each set of 5... It was like I wasn't running as far! Plus slowing down helped me get through it without re-hurting anything... the whole way home I sang taper time to the tune of hammer time in my head and had a huge smile on my face. Then I realized that taper time means it's almost race time and then I found my Magical Express tickets in my mailbox... then I had a mini freakout.

This was a tough one today. I did my 10 yesterday and hit my goal with no problem. I was a little sore this morning, but nothing major. The weather today was brutal. Constant rain, not hard but steady, pretty chilly (probably didn't hit 40) and then the wind picked up. I wanted to do 20. At about mile 12 I seriously wasn't sure if I was going to make it. I felt really out of it even though I had been taking a steady stream of Shot Bloks the whole run. I stopped at a gas station to get more water and get warmed up. I was only a couple miles from home so I sucked down a caffeinated Hammer Gel and had no choice but to press on. The rain let up so I took a detour to try and at least get to 15 if not more. The gel kicked in and I felt really strong and I was able to double back and get 17.

When I got home and started peeling off my clothes, it was like I went into a swimming pool fully clothed. And, ah yes, nice warm shower. And, ah yes, big bowl of Velveeta shells and cheese and chicken with two big scoops of quinoa. And a lot of slightly diluted cherry juice. Yum!

Not sure if this will help but buy KT tape and tape for that syndrome and wear compression tights. They have the taping tutorials online. I use the Performx tights that keep hips aligned while running and I don't have a problem so maybe it can help you.

Hmm..I will have to look into the tights. I've heard of KT tape but was never sure what it was used for. I'll have to look into it!

I have had at least 2 bouts of ITB in the past and spent time with the PT. If you can't get in to the PT soon, you can try to do some of what they would recommend. For me, the exercises focused on hip/quad/hammie strengthening. These are things that can be done at home with a resistance band. Also, foam rolling--which I'm sure everyone has commented on-- is useful for rolling out the area. I wouldn't do it while it actively pains you, but as soon as it is only "mildy teeth-jarring" ;)

I have been KT taped and also worn a ITB strap. The strap is not the same as the one you are referencing. It's really just a band that you place above the knee that hurts. It's purpose is to keep that IT band from rubbing across the knee. My experience was that it seemed to work for me for a while, then not so much.

I hope you can make this go away soon. It will take some work on your part. For me, rest is really the best thing to do.

Good luck,

Maura

Thank you! I'm asking for a foam roller for xmas. I have The Stick which worked wonders for my calves but I can't seem to get it my ITBand area hurt so I assume its not working (since I always hear how painful tht is). I know I need to rest..so hard though this late in the game.

Even if Runner's knee and not ITBS, they are pretty much the same... Tight outer side(ITB) and possibly weak VMO (inner Quad). Neither will do much damage if you run, just lengthen recovery.

The brace/sleeve (I refer as brace because the fingers find those keys easier but really one in the same for this discussion) the Doc referred to is a good way to go. Though, there are several ways to skin the cat. The advantage of the brace is the neoprene-like material will warm the area, help promote blood flow. I have found that if you opt for one with velcro straps on both ends, it tends to stay up on the run where one without may roll and fall down. The open patella keeps you from smashing the knee cap into the joint.

I also like the ChoPat or strap type of sleeve. While I have never worn one more than a run or two, they will help keep the ITB in place and lower the inflammation.

The old school now new age way to attack this is through taping. Way back, all was had for an overuse injury was to tape the knee. For the ITB, it took 3 or 4 pieces of stretchy tape applied before the run or play and it helped the injured area feel better. Today KT Tape has created a new market niche thanks to a shoulder issue in the 2008 Olympic volleyball tourney. It is basically the same thing we did in the 70's and 80's but with pre-cut, better sticking tape.

This vid shows how to tape the outer knee. http://youtu.be/f76B0j_bz5E

I figured that I'll keep doing the exercises my brother's girlfriend told me to do for Runner's knee then add in what they tell me for ITBS at PT. I'm definitely going to check out that video on taping!!

The 5k today wasn't too bad. I had absolutely no pain until 1.5 miles, and then it was only slight. Not even enough to slow down my pace at all. Tonight however, is a different story. It's pretty achy. I've iced my knee twice but it still feels achy and weak. And running the 5k today after only running 2 times in almost 4 weeks, I'm not sure how my legs are going to do for the half! Not just my knee, but all my muscles are tired! I'm going to try cycling some since my condo has a gym, but I still don't think that will create the same feeling as all the pounding of the pavement that tires me out. Any ideas on how long I should be cycling? I think I've been on an excersize bike maybe once in my life!

Just try for the time you would have run rather than trying to get more complex. If you plan say run 5 and you do that in 50 min, then cycle 50 min. Try to keep the intensity about the same.

I did 6 miles at 14 min/mile pace. Walked the 1st mile then did run 5 sec/walk 55 sec for 2 miles. Tried run 10sec/walk 50 sec for the next 2 miles but either had foot pain or imagined foot pain after 1.5 miles. I then walked 0.5 miles without pain and resumed run 5 sec/ walk 55sec. Mentally I'm just dying to go out for a fast run but I'm so paranoid about my foot. On the plus side my run 10sec/walk50 sec mile was 13:30 pace which isn't terrible....
I'll see what Jeff Galloway says about today's effort and start planning for my last long run (walk?) next weekend. At this point I'm more paranoid about the injury than about finishing!

You are actually good enough to go if you just run 6-12 next week then follow his taper.... Better to go cautious if worried

Geez! Once again, a volunteer or scofflaw has pocketed several medals on race morning and is trying to market them on EBay. II helped nab one from the 2011 Princess Half. In that case, the lady was selling 10 or 20 medals all at once the week following the race. It was so easy to spot. Now this seller is selling numerous relay and a couple full medals with the cellophane still on the medal I am writing runDisney once again and pointing out the seller. They have removed their city from their profile so I cannot be as sure as I was with the Princess medals, but it is clear that these are out of the big box.

I wrote the seller and I am hoping like last time, the seller will pull them all as soon as they figure out that a buyer has figured out the game. If they would not get greedy and just sell one at a time, no one would ever spot them.

Maybe Disney can assign a security person to the rack as they hand the medals

ADDED

Wow, I was grabbing the auction numbers and in addition to the 8 currently on auction, this seller recently sold 45 2012 medals.

I submitted a 1/2 time of 1:45:00 for Full Marathon. I was placed in "E". Does that seem right? seeing alot of posts that would make me think I should be higher up. any help would be appreciated. this is my first full and do not want to be put wrong pace with the large amount of runners . Thanks
