Official WDW Marathon Weekend 2013 Thread-Part 2

Add me to the list of injured marathoners :-( 3 weeks ago I did my 14 miler and felt great during the run. After I stopped however my calf was really hurting. I foam rolled and iced it, put on my compression sleeves and went on with my day. Well, now it's been 3 weeks and I still can't run. The pain has gotten so much better- I went from not being able to lift my foot to being able to walk with no problems. The pain now is only from the pounding of running. It kind of feels like the pain is in my shin/in the bone now instead of in the muscle as originally thought. It doesn't hurt on the elliptical or when I walk, so I will try to maintain my fitness this way for now. I'm going to see a doctor this weekend and hope for the best. I'm lucky enough that it doesn't hurt to walk, so if it comes down to it I know I would be able to walk the marathon. But this is my first marathon and I was really hoping to be able to run the whole thing. Sorry for the rant and thanks for reading-- I just needed to vent my frustrations!

Good luck in your training everyone! Keep up the amazing work!!

Skip runs between now and your appointment. I would hate to see this go really bad before the appointment.

Thanks Coach! I have not been able to run since the 14 miler, and I have been wearing compression sleeves every day :-) I took 2.5 weeks as complete rest and just started doing the elliptical 3 days ago. I'm trying to take it as easy as possible because I'd rather rest than knock myself out of the game completely! Fingers crossed :goodvibes

As stated above, the gel used at Disney is BioFreeze. Just make sure that when applying that you do not rub your brow until after the next water stop. It will transfer to the forehead and you will get a case of burning red eye as a result.

With regard to running a mile then walking - that is a great option if you have been running continuously prior to the injury. I would attempt to pick the run back up in a minute rather than by distance. I would also add water stations to the walk just to keep the legs fresher. Note that the run a mile walk a minute can be a little much so feel free to back off the distance a bit if needed.

i wonder how biofreeze compares to the voltaren gel. the gel i got was from a doc's prescription and it's an antinflammatory. i need to look up biofreeze. sounds powerful!

walking a minute is way less walking than walking 1/10 mile. shoot ;) but then again i didn't think about the water stops too...

i am hoping to be able to start running again soon. no idea how much i will be able to do or how far i'll be able to go before this race. but i sure have alot of heart!

ADDED - Meant to say first that the course is really flat compared with many. The elevation changes less than 60 overall.

That section is rolling, more down to the creeks. Remember that the elevation data comes from the USGS quads maps and those have not been updated for a couple decades - so you are seeing the original lay of the land.

For a point of reference, all hills are at

Mile 1 - Overpass over the exit into Epcot Parking.
Mile 4.5 - The water bridge - a viaduct under Seven Seas Lagoon. Coming out of this is the steepest incline of the race
Mile 15 - Overpass over Buena Vista
Mile 16 - Overpass over World Drive
Mile 21.4 - Right hand turn from Osceola onto World - this turn is bankd at a 15 degree incline and then rises up and over the south entrance to Hollywood Studios.
Mile 22 - Coming up to Buena Vista Dr off of World Dr
Mile 24.4 and 24.8 - The bridges of Crescent lake. Steeper than you remember walking around the lake the day before.
Mile 25 - The bridges between Great Britain and France in Epcot
Mile 25.3 - The draw bridge at China

Also each oak has a hill. The marquee building (Castle, SpaceShip Earth, Hat and Tree of Life) are higher than the rest of the park.

how about the race track that we'll be running around? think that will be very banked?

I have a layering question. We're running the Half for Team Gleason to assist ALS patients and the only request Team Gleason had was that we wear one of their tech shirts. We bought the ladies' one for me, and it's a V-neck. I'm scared to wear a long sleeve shirt underneath it as I usually get really hot while running and by no later than mile 3 am removing my running jacket to tie it around my waist, where it's there in case I chill down again. But I'm also scared to run with my upper chest exposed by a V-neck. Is there any sort of garment or such I can wear that will cover my neck but not have my arms covered if I reach that hot point? Like a high collar sleeveless tech shirt, or some type of scarf/dickey thing? Thanks!!!

i'd just do the throwaway sweatshirt thing. start out with your sweatshirt on and when you get hot just toss it to the side. i think once you warm up the chances of you chilling down again are pretty slim. by the time any of the team gleason people will be looking for you, you'll probably have the sweathshirt off already! good luck!

shoot! i hear you. i'm nursing what the doc and PT think is hamstring tendonitis and i haven't been able to run for 2 weeks. and i have a sinking feeling it will be a while before i can run again. i hope that your issue is similar and just needs rest. i agree with what cewait said - rest til you see the doc. good luck!

i hope all the injured folks feel better soon! this race is coming up soon.

my knee has really improved thank goodness. it still doesn't feel great but i'm anxious to try running again. then again, i don't want to try and then get 1/4 mile and be in pain.

good luck to all!

Voltaren is an NSAID and I would consider discontinued use or at least discuss with the docs about its use during long endurance activities. The issue is the renal system and the affect that NSAIDs have on the constricting arteries and the possible lack of blood flow into the kidneys. These organs already suffer during a long workout and the NSAIDs can possible put them in harm. It may be worth a discussion... I do know that thousands of runners ran marathon taking NSAIDs before the studies came out. Most all race literature says no and to titrate off the drug a day before and stay off until normal renal operation is present....

P 36 has the latest advice from the Disney Race Doc http://as1.wdpromedia.com/media/rundisney/pdf/wine-dine/2012/WnD12Program.pdf

Biofreeze is not an anti-inflammatory. It is an herbal pain deliver that blocks the nerve signals. It feels icy then can feel warm... Unlike petroleum based cremes (like BenGay, Icy Hot), you cannot overdose on Biofreeze. Though some care is needed to keep it out of your eyes or sensitive areas during a race. You probably will not get the same relief from Biofreeze that you are getting from the script.

how about the race track that we'll be running around? think that will be very banked?

Banking is 7-10 degrees in the corners. I originally though that we would be kept on the warm up track (the inner loop) that is less banked, but looking at the certification drawing for this race and the original Princess layout I am thinking we are on the actual track. The good news is that we are only running through Corner 2 and then up the track and out the maintenance gate along the back stretch.

Feet. I have used duct tape to cover the top mesh - then pulled the tape off at the start of the race. You do not want to go more than 15 minutes or so before untagging so that you feet do not become wet and blisters become a possibility.

Those little blue bags you put over your shoes in hospitals work really well to keep your feet warm before a race too.

Good idea...

So, if I add scrubs as a throw down layer and a funny patterned dew rag and then sleep at a Holiday Inn Express I could be Doc Chas.

I have seen a lot of people wearing the disposable OR gowns as their throw down layer. They're fairly imperveable so they work well if it's drizzly. I could bring you one.... :lmao:

Let me correct this, looking at the course drawing on the Bart Yasso course preview, we will be on the warm up track. The corners are not banked on the warm up track - well cambered like a roadway at most.

I would love to have Bart's title - Chief Running Officer.

Here is his preview vid just in case

Definitely a great option. I have worn the throw down, rip away, Tyvek painter's suits a couple times. It would be great if they were green as you feel like the Hulk when you rip it off. The first year I used them the Dalmatian movies were recent history and we spent the day coloring spots on the suit.

Lots of fun

I had a dream last night that I was doing the half marathon(not the full...which is what I am registered for) and it was on an endless flight of stairs in the wide world of sports building where they hold the expo:scared1:. In my dream I did really well until mile 12. I had to make a bathroom stop. When I got out of the bathroom they were cleaning up the race stuff and they had closed the course. I never got the oppurtunity to finish. I hate these dreams!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:furious:

Funny. My recurring dream is that I'm running a good time on the course without many people around me and then all of the sudden it goes to an unexpected trail section. After running on the trail section it ends up leading me into a building, which obviously is not part of the course. I walk into the building and can't find anyone who knows anything about the race.

Oh, good....I'm not the only one who dreams I have to run through buildings! Running races, triathlons...my race dreams almost always have me running in a building (and usually getting lost). My BF's 'theory' is that it relates to running through the Castle (and the costume section at HS), but I'm not so sure.

Note to people: the Tyvek suits are way cheaper at Home Depot, etc, rather than buying one at the expo "made for runners" (i.e. super marked up). I do like the idea of the OR booties.

Weird, We may all need to see the same shrink. What is it about the danged building!

I agree, but the couple times I have purchased at the expo we had a late coming cold snap. Ok well the 2010 was not late coming as I had to pay extra weight fees for all the iron sulfate based hand warmers that went to Florida. They were still a last minute opportunity purchase for me.

In 2010 I was toying with the Runners Retreat as a special 5th Goofy gift. I put it off as the weather looked reasonable but then on the 16th day out the 15th day temps dipped. Then when the 15-day forecast included the marathon, the last spots in the tent sold out. I am sure that the tent wrist bands would have gone for double the cost on Saturday and Sunday AM.

Pixie dust please.....

Not race related and really non-Disney related.

As many know, the company I work for has a division office in Maitland, Fl. Maitland is on the north side of Orlando. After we merged with the company that owned the Fl assets, my job duties took me to the MCO area at least monthly for a 3-4 year period (thus the knowledge base for all the run ideas and since my boss said stay anywhere as long as the hotel title did not have Disney in it - (I love the Marriott Village just across I4)). As a result of all my trips to MCO, I have run almost every path published by Disney and created several paths that Disney probably wishes I would not publish. I am also known well enough by the Boardwalk guard staff so that they allow me to park and run at the resort, even though they are not really allowing this to occur any longer before 6 AM.

Recently our company was acquired by another firm and I have been a lost ship in my new and very reduced responsibilities. It is to the point that I have been actively looking for better opportunities. A couple weeks ago a job was posted in our Maitland Office. It is a totally different path for me, but one that I was on 20 years ago.

I have an interview in the next couple weeks. Hopefully, without jinxing the path forward, the position reports to a person who I have a great working relationship with. We spoke today to firm up my desire to move forward in the interview process. I guess I am looking for a little pixie dust (and prayers) to help smooth out the process and for guidance on making what I think will be the the inevitable decision. I really must get past the thought of "wouldn't it be really neat to live 5 minutes from Disney."

Thanks for reading....

Sending pixie dust your way! I live in Casselberry and work in Winter Park, so if you need any info about that area (though it sounds like you've spent your fair share of time here!) PM me!

Good luck!! I hope everything works out sooner rather than later...because it WILL work out. :)

Did anyone else get an email from runDisney today? I got one with training tips, links to buy park tickets, etc. It also had a link to the virtual goody bag. I haven't gotten to look at it yet (you need Flash and I am on an iPad right now). And don't they normally post waivers/bib numbers about a month out?? It's coming up!! :hyper:

Yes, and yes, the waivers will be out late next week or early the following. I am betting on the following week.

We'll be praying for you!::yes::
