Official Tinker Bell Half Marathon 2012 thread

Hopefully you get this before you buy your tix~ if you buy them through Get Travel (the race travel co.) they have 3 days for $174.

Thanks, Kim! :flower3: I hadn't purchased my tickets yet so it's all good! :tink: I'm staying DVC but I'm sure they will still sell me a ticket. Once I have my tickets I'll be all set for the race . . . well, except for the 12 more weeks of training. :rotfl:

Good morning! I'm new to this thread & to running (but not new to DIS or Disneyland.)

I'll be running the 5K with my 14yr old. This is my first runDisney event and my first race. I've been training for the Princess Half @ WDW in February 2012. Super excited - going for the Coast to Coast! Planning on the Disneyland 1/2 in September for my bday.

Good luck to all of you doing the Tinkerbell Half! Hope to see you there. If you have any Disneyland questions - feel free to ask! That's my home away from home. :)

I know I already welcomed you on the princess thread but I am going to do here too ;)
:welcome:
I am going coast to coast this year too! But I am doing Tink and the Princess. I am a little worried about doing them back to back months, but I think I will be okay.

How exciting! :yay: Doing them back to back is on one of the Tink training schedules. Can't wait to see that coast to coast medal! :thumbsup2

11 miles on deck for me tomorrow -- 132 laps around the indoor track. :rolleyes1

Thank you so much for the warm welcome on both threads! I think it's awesome you're running both - if you can do one you can surely do the other. And like lisah0711 said, there is a training program with both runs on it on the runDisney site.

The best part is I may get to see you at DL in January and then WDW in Feb. Cool!

lisah0711, thank you also for the welcome also! Can't believe you're doing that many laps - although an indoor track would be welcome right now. By the time I get off work it's too dark to run now and I don't want to use the treadmill at the gym :sad2:

Just put a room at the Grand Californian on hold. Hate to spend that much money for just my daughter and myself. But, the whole race package is my Christmas present from my husband. He says to go for the Grand Californian. DD and I are flying out from Savannah for race. Then, on to WDW in February for the Princess. DD and I are "perfect Princesses", having done all of them. Princess Half Marathon trip is my birthday present. This is the year for the Coast to Coast because DD got a voucher for free airfare and mom and dad are picking up the rest of her expenses. She's a doctor and I'm still paying for her. When do your kids ever stop costing you money???? I love it because the half marathons we do together are still our way of connecting even though we live 10 hours away from each other.

I'm using this as my inspiration when I do my 18 miler on Saturday! :goodvibes How did you do this w/o losing count or getting dizzy!?!

We're sloooowwwlllyy getting closer. Getting really excited for this now. They started posting Jan. hours for the park. We have a ways to get to race weekend, but at least the beginning of the month is up!

My Mr. Smee costume is almost complete for the 5k. Found a red beanie and some navy sweats that are perfect. And hopefully, if there's anything left in the store, Friday getting a blue and light gray stripped thermal top at Old Navy for only $7! Wish it was white instead of light gray, but it's light enough and the race is at 10:30, so I don't think it's a big deal.

Don't know how long everyone's staying after the race, but I got an email from Southwest about cheap flights, at least from SJ so maybe everywhere else, on Tuesdays.

Hope everyone's training is going well and have a great Thanksgiving!

Thanks! :flower3: It's not too bad on the indoor track. I just count the laps for each mile as many times as I need to get to the magic number of miles. It is good practice for a race because you have to pass people or watch out for people behind you. And it's good mental training when it gets boring. :goodvibes

You don't have to worry about what you eat for Thanksgiving with an 18 miles on Saturday. Are you training for a marathon, too? You make me happy I am only doing 12. :tink:

Happy Thanksgiving to all our Tinker Bells!

I'm thankful to have a Disneyland race to run soon and all you WISHers to share it with! :flower3:

Just got back laaaaaate last night from a wonderful Thanksgiving trip to WDW with the BF...our first time there during the holidays. Everything was beautiful!!! I definitely fell off the wagon though :) We both planned to do our long run on Friday morning...I packed my gear and everything and totally wimped out...even after watching my incredibly dedicated and disciplined BF walk out the hotel room door to do 16 miles! I just couldn't do it, and I only had 7 to do. And if that wasn't bad enough, I ate horribly the entire time...oh and discovered warm, fresh caramel popcorn at the Caramel Kuche...or however you spell it...in Germany at Epcot. popcorn:: O...M...G is all I can say about that stuff. It's now on my must-have list for every trip. So, today I'm trying to mentally pump myself up for this week to get back ON the wagon. I'm sure it's going to be a rough running week with all the crap that's in my system.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!!!

Sounds like a fun visit, Summer. :santa: I would have a hard time running at WDW if I wasn't racing, too. ;)

When I was at Galloway running school last summer Jeff Galloway said everyone misses long runs. He recommended just doing the next long run when it is scheduled and walking the first 4 or 5 miles, then doing the rest of the mileage that was on the schedule. Then continue the training as usual.

There are still 60 days until our race and you've raced a lot this year. :tink:

Anyone going to DL between now and the race? I'm wondering about the location for the WISH meet on Saturday. I think the traditional spot is the tables by the La Brea Bakery. I'm wondering if it would be better to try a different spot with a cover in case it is cool and/or rainy. My recollection is that there are covered tables outside at Whitewater Snacks but it would be nice someone could double check for us. :flower3:

My 12 miles on Saturday went well. I was feeling a little bad because I was pretty sore Saturday night but then I realized it was only the third time I had gone that far and the other two times were in races. Yesterday I was fine. It gives me more confidence that I will make it this time without being swept like the Princess. :cool2:

Have a great week! :goodvibes

Are you training for a marathon, too? You make me happy I am only doing 12. :tink:

Yeah, I have Honolulu in a couple of weeks and today is the official 16-week start for the LA Marathon in March. But that training schedule is getting tweaked a little. :goodvibes

I don't remember a Whitewater Snacks~ where's that one? I know we couldn't hang around b/c it's an entrance/exit to the hotel, but what about next to Sephora w/ the overhang of the GC entrance area. That way if it's not raining there are the sitting areas in the middle of DTD and if it is raining we'd have some protection. Another thought could be by the monorail area. The track at the very least has coverage and I think the ceiling on the building has an overhanging roof. The only other place I can think of is the side tables of ESPN. I know the tables have umbrellas, just don't remember if the building itself has an overhang that'll protect the tables. Maybe over by Tortilla Joe's or House of Blues to the left of the entrance?

If anyone's still looking for flights, I got an email from Southwest about Cyber Monday sales on flights, they were pretty good. I think the sale goes out to Mid-May so if you're running Princess too check it out!:goodvibes

Honolulu :beach: Sounds like fun! :cool2:

White Water Snacks is the counter service restaurant at the Grand Californian. I think your idea of being near the overhang of the GC is a good one, too. It would be nice to have a little WISH meet and get a group picture if we can. There is always at the W tent at the race, too. :goodvibes

59 days until the race! :cool1: That also means its PS time if anyone out there still needs to make dining reservations.

Kim, good luck in Honolulu! We lived there for 6 months and our apartment was on mile 5 of the course (I think the course might have changed since then, though). We were across the street from the Hilton Hawaiian Village (DH's office was there). We were about 1 mile from the start. I remember seeing everyone walking from their hotels to the start starting at about 3:30AM. The drums were playing and everyone was so excited. Watching 25,000 people run/walk by was pretty amazing. The energy of those racers was really awesome and inspiring. I'd love to do that race one day!

I think those are some pretty good suggestions for a meet, I saw on the DTD map that the Sephora store is also next to a Jamba Juice. I'll definitely need guidance on how to cut through the GCH to get to the race start, I'm not familiar with that area at all! I think it would be a good idea not to have to walk too far into DTD, after the meet we are having dinner with family offsite so I'll be leaving towards Harbor.

I hope everyone's training is going well and that you all aren't sidelined by illness like I have been. I need to get back in gear, 17 days until my first 10K!

I'd love to meet up as well.

After the Princess and Disneyland 1/2's I stopped by the "W" tent to see if there were Wishers there. But how do I know? I wear a costume and so do a lot of other people, so not a WISH shirt.
What's the best way to tell?
Does someone have a sign???

Yesterday was a rainy day, so did 7 miles on the indoor track at the rec center. 70 laps around a track is close to insanity. To keep my mind occupied I kept tracking my pace. I was doing about a 13 minute pace. That does not translate into a 13 outside, however! DD and I have never been to Disneyland before, so don't know where to go for meals, so no reservations made. We are staying at DL hotel after agonizing hours of trying to decide where to stay. In February, we go to WDW for the Princess and our Coast to Coast medals. Pretty exciting!

The early morning will be me!! They said on the race website that there's also fireworks at the start along w/ the drums. And that along the beginning of the course a lot of the stores leave their x-mas lights on... really excited about this race. Plus being in Oahu helps!:goodvibes We leave in 1 week and I can't wait. Not to mention all the other activities my sister and I are doing. It'll be a lot of fun.

As for the cut through of GC, if I remember correctly, it shouldn't be that hard. You go in through the entrance next to Sephora and turn right. I think there are signs to the lobby. (It's be a long time since I've stayed there). When you exit the lobby into the car drive through area, there should be a stop light at the street (Disneyland Dr). PP is across the street, so all you have to do is cross at the light and go left. Just past PP is their parking lot and I think the staging/start area!

Good luck on your 10K!

Is there anything in particular that you're looking for? Aside from the parks, DTD and the DL Hotel and GC have really good restaurants. Across from the resort is an area called Garden Walk that has some restaurants as well. Since you've never been to DL before, a neat place to eat at is the Blue Bayou. It's inside DL and New Orleans Square and they have cajun/creole food. The fun part of the restaurant is that it's inside POC! Also, if you are planning on seeing WOC, they have dining plans and you either get a fastpass for the show or can eat at the restaurant and watch the show so that's an option as well.

The reservations just opened up(DL is 60 days) so you should be fine for times. Also, aside from runners, the park shouldn't be that crowded. We miss MLK weekend and the various breaks in February.

I will be wearing my green WISH shirt. I think my fellow Lisa and Tink liesel is also planning on wearing hers. I may see if I can figure out a sign with the WISH logo but it won't be very big due to packing limitations.
I've read that people give the Fockers "I'm watching you" sign to Dis'ers but frankly I would be afraid to do that in California! :rotfl:

The indoor track helps that mental training for sure! :lmao:

A coast to coast will be a blast! princess:

I second Kim's suggestion about the Blue Bayou. If you go for lunch and get the first seating you have a good chance of sitting by the water. pirate:

Eight weeks until our race -- it will go by quickly, especailly with the holidays. :santa:

Thanks for the info, if we have our meet over by the GC, I'll have to check that out. Good luck in Honolulu! Many runners just walk into the ocean to soak their legs after the race, it was pretty funny seeing so many people in their running gear just standing in the ocean!

I hope everyone's training is going well. I was sidelined by illness but I'm back! The weather here in Colorado is freezing, I hope everyone else can get outside right now.

Thanks! Everyone in the ocean sounds like the Lake Tahoe Marathon weekend. After the finish, everyone was in the lake... but the water in HI is a little different from Tahoe!! :rotfl2: Hope it's not that bad in CO this winter for you. It felt like I was there this morning when I was out, a nice and warm 36!

I was on another site and they had some refurbishment schedules for the race:
Disneyland Park
• Matterhorn Bobsleds: Closed for major refurbishment including the addition of new ride vehicles January 9 - June 14.
• Sailing Ship Columbia: Closed for refurbishment January 23 - February 17.
• "it's a small world": Closed to remove holiday overlay January 23 through February 2.
• Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes: Closed for one day, January 24.
• Jolly Holiday Bakery Café: Opens January 2012 in location of the former Plaza Pavilion.
• Blue Ribbon Bakery, Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor and Candy Palace: Food service locations and shops close January 2012 for major restaurant and shopping expansion projects affecting current spaces.

Disney California Adventure
• Redwood Creek Challenge Trail: Closed for refurbishment January 9 - 27.
• Grizzly River Run: Closed for refurbishment January 23 - March 2.
• Soarin' Over California: Closed for refurbishment January 30 - February 3.

Nothing yet on HM, hopefully it'll be before we're there and open that weekend. But for it being the off-season, I was surprised to see almost everything will be up and running!

Good luck w/ training this week everyone!

Hi everyone !!!

Just wanted to give a possible "heads up" regarding cold weather for our race....We just returned from 5 days at Disneyland and the nights and mornings were really cold (low 40's). I know in some parts of the country that isn't bad but the cold Santa Ana winds and low temps really made my morning run difficult and miserable. I had no idea it ever got so cold down there. I was thinking we really could have a really cold race morning. Any clothing tips from anyone to keep warm if it's a really cold race morning ?? I am so used to the warm weather we have for the DL 1/2...I'm getting a little worried about the weather for our race in Jan.
