Official Tinker Bell Half Marathon 2012 thread

I usually bring down a couple of big black trash bags to throw over to keep warm prace and throw off after the start. I'm also picking up a cheap pair of throw away gloves/mittens from target- that way if I get warm I can just toss them. I also picked up a green tech material pullover w/ a 1/2 zipper from adidas I can wear & if it's cold I have it and if I get warm I can take it off. Another idea is for pants. Don't know what you run in, but maybe capris or 3/4 pants- that way it's not to hot or cold.

Sorry so wordy, but hope that helps a little. Closer we get more ideas will flow!:goodvibes

OMG! I ran the Vegas rock and Roll Half Marathon on Sunday and it was a disaster. They ran out of swag bags, shirts and medals but the worst was they ran out of water and cytomax and were taking down the tables way before the race ended.

They didn't let us go in waves so there was NO room. I finished in 3:11 and my usual 1/2 time is 2:45. There was just no room to go any where.

Take a look at their facebook page or just google RNR Vegas problems and you will see what I mean.

After the race we were all funneled into Mandalay Bay and 1,000 of people were stuck in the hallways for hours. People were passing out left and right.

The worst part was that the water they did have must have been contaminated (they were filling trash cans from fire hydrants and then dipping the cups in the trrash can with their bare hands) because 1,000 of people were sick after the race.

Hello Tinker Bells! :tink:

I hope everyone's training is going well. I was sidelined by illness but I'm back! The weather here in Colorado is freezing, I hope everyone else can get outside right now.

Glad that you are feeling better and hope the weather gets a little better for you soon! You are a trouper! :flower3:

Thanks! Everyone in the ocean sounds like the Lake Tahoe Marathon weekend. After the finish, everyone was in the lake... but the water in HI is a little different from Tahoe!! :rotfl2: Hope it's not that bad in CO this winter for you. It felt like I was there this morning when I was out, a nice and warm 36!

I was on another site and they had some refurbishment schedules for the race:
Disneyland Park
• Matterhorn Bobsleds: Closed for major refurbishment including the addition of new ride vehicles January 9 - June 14.
• Sailing Ship Columbia: Closed for refurbishment January 23 - February 17.
• "it's a small world": Closed to remove holiday overlay January 23 through February 2.
• Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes: Closed for one day, January 24.
• Jolly Holiday Bakery Café: Opens January 2012 in location of the former Plaza Pavilion.
• Blue Ribbon Bakery, Gibson Girl Ice Cream Parlor and Candy Palace: Food service locations and shops close January 2012 for major restaurant and shopping expansion projects affecting current spaces.

Disney California Adventure
• Redwood Creek Challenge Trail: Closed for refurbishment January 9 - 27.
• Grizzly River Run: Closed for refurbishment January 23 - March 2.
• Soarin' Over California: Closed for refurbishment January 30 - February 3.

Nothing yet on HM, hopefully it'll be before we're there and open that weekend. But for it being the off-season, I was surprised to see almost everything will be up and running!

Good luck w/ training this week everyone!

Thanks for the info, Kim. :goodvibes Thank goodness they aren't closing Soarin' until after the race.

Hi everyone !!!

Just wanted to give a possible "heads up" regarding cold weather for our race....We just returned from 5 days at Disneyland and the nights and mornings were really cold (low 40's). I know in some parts of the country that isn't bad but the cold Santa Ana winds and low temps really made my morning run difficult and miserable. I had no idea it ever got so cold down there. I was thinking we really could have a really cold race morning. Any clothing tips from anyone to keep warm if it's a really cold race morning ?? I am so used to the warm weather we have for the DL 1/2...I'm getting a little worried about the weather for our race in Jan.

Brrrrrr! Good job getting out there and running in the crazy California weather! :sunny:

Kim had some great suggestions for dealing with cold temps before the race. I saw people at the Princess with bathrobes and blankets before the race. I had a fleece jacket that was too large that I used and discarded. I believe that all the items that are discarded are sent to charity. For me the key I think is to have stuff that I can dump because later on I want to be carting around as little as possible.

Sorry so wordy, but hope that helps a little. Closer we get more ideas will flow!:goodvibes

You won't have to be worrying about being too cold in Hawaii soon! :goodvibes

Yikes! :scared1: Sounds horrible! I'm sure there are Rock n' Roll marathons that are great but the ones I've heard about in Vegas and Providence don't make me want to run any.

How's that training going? :tinker:

I ran the RNR in San Diego in June and it went fairly smooth. The only big problem was the traffic getting off the freeway was so backed up I made it to the starting line just in time for my corral to start. but with the large number of people these RNR races attract it was to be expected.

I plan to stick to the two Disneyland races from now on and local 5 and 10 K's.

I ran RnR Vegas on Sunday as well. I didn't have the same experience as what others are posting on Facebook (I feel so bad for them) and I think it is because I didn't need to go in to Mandalay Bay after the race. I also didn't take any water/Cytomax from the stations because I had my own water. I definitely think things could have been a bit more organized. When we came up on the first aid station and they were out of water, I thought that to be completely unacceptable. Although I didn't need the water, others did. All in all, I had a good race though. It was totally packed and never thinned out. I think this race attracted everyone from walkers to runners to in-between. I also think it attracted people who thought they could "party" while they walked the race route. I saw multiple people drinking alcohol and celebrating that. 13.1 miles is pretty serious and to be drinking bottles of beer at mile 1...that's just not smart IMO!

I'm excited for Tink but will definitely purchase some warmer clothing to run in. I nearly froze at the end of the Vegas race. Thankfully my DH was there to throw his sweatshirt on me and quickly usher me back to our room at Luxor. ;)

To the person asking about what to wear for cooler weather, I find that I need gloves. I start with the gloves, at some point take them off, but then I find I need them again.

Just received an email from runDisney telling me the next email will have bib and waiver info. :yay:

I've never done a 5K but I really like a 10K race. :goodvibes

I followed the link in the email to the race program and it has lots of details about the expo, map of the race start and finish, park hours for that weekend, etc. The section on event transportation is missing so I guess we'll have to wait to get those details. Its getting more real! :cool1:

Ooo, I was reading on my phone and didn't realize there was so much info! :tinker: I put the link to the program in the first post. Can't wait to see what corral I am in. :yay:

I wonder if I typo'ed my email address when I registered for this race because I haven't gotten any emails :confused3 I must have.

This is absolutely horrible! Completely unacceptable!

I was so cold waiting to start. I wish I had on warmer clothes but I thought I'd warm up running but it was so packed I never really got to. I plan to bring gloves and a sweater to the Tink race but will most likely toss them right before the start.

this was my 4th 1/2 and I have never seem so many un-serious (is that a word?) runners/walkers.

This is absolutely horrible! Completely unacceptable!

Yep. I eamiled compertitor group and actually got a response back. They are looking in to it.

Me either.:confused3

Very strange...and now that I think about it, I know I didn't typo my email on the registration because I did get the registration confirmation as well as the registration payment receipt in my email. oh well...everyone here is good about posting links to everything!

I finally got back "in the game" today...with a short-ish Thanksgiving vacation and then a cold for a week after that, I've missed my last two long runs and most of the shorter ones in between...I went out for 8 this morning as scheduled and it wasn't as bad as I was expecting really. Although, after 5 my problem areas (hips, thighs) started to really stiffen up and the last mile was fairly painful. But it felt good to get back out there and get it done. Hopefully no more hiccups for the rest of training.

Hope everyone has great runs this weekend!

re: rnr vegas - my dad ran rnr miami this weekend and he said it was very organized. he's done so many races over so many years, so i hold his opinion in high regard. i also found it interesting that rnr posted on facebook right before the race that "miami was a non-hydrant market" and they will be using bottled water.

dare i say rnr learned from some of it's mistakes?

I ran a 12k race yesterday. When I came upon every aid station, I looked around to see if volunteers were wearing gloves and what their water source was. Even though I'm one of the lucky ones that didn't get sick in Vegas, I learned a lot from the complaints! Doing RnR Arizona in January and will watch for their water sources. Non bottled water is not acceptable!!! Glad to hear they cleaned it up for Miami!

Good luck w/ training this week everyone!

Apparently I'm destined to never ride the Matterhorn. It was closed when I was there in July and will be closed again when I'm there for the race. :( :sad1:

I already booked my tickets and hotel room. The only thing I don't have nailed down is my transportation from LAX to my hotel and my tickets. However, I think I will enlist my LA-based Coast Guard cousin's help on both of those fronts. I want to get another military ticket ($99 3-day pass) and do the Behind-the-Scenes tour (I think it's Walt's Tour or something like that) on Saturday.

I haven't really been training per se, but I'm beginning to wonder if training really matters for me. Case in point: I trained little-to-none for my first half marathon (1st W&D) and trained quite a bit for this past W&D - got the same time both races, and well ahead of the sweeper time. I suppose my recovery may have been a little quicker after this last race, but I was also wearing better shoes/inserts. I *do* have PT (running, push-ups, & sit-ups) 3 times per week, so it's not like I'm not doing anything. I'm just not getting the distance in. I'm not worried, though.

The only thing I *am* worried about is the weather. Living in FL, I don't have any cold-weather running gear, and certainly don't have anything I'd want to discard during the race. I guess I'll have to do some shopping after Christmas and figure it out.

I will be wearing a WISH shirt and hope to meet some people at whatever meet-up happens. I'll be out there by myself so it'll be nice to have someone to talk to. :)

I'm so happy I found these boards. I'll be running in my first Half at the Tinker Bell race and am soooo excited. I can't believe it's almost here.

I"m coming off a new injury and just now trying to back on track with training. There's so much to do still. I haven't even decided on a costume.

I've enjoyed reading the posts here. I'm sure I'll continue to spend time here. :hippie:

proudmonkeymama,
Welcome and contrats on signing up for your first 1/2 !!!!!! Disney races are so much fun and I am sure you will sign up for more in the future. The Disneyland 1/2 marathon that takes place over Labor Day Weekend is always a must and is so much fun. Good luck with your training :cheer2:

Looking forward to my 10 mile run this weekend... not! :lmao: its been so cold that we have to do them on treadmills. Does anyone have a good idea for a movie we could watch that would make the two hours fly by? All I want for xmas is these last few long prep runs to go quickly! :santa:
