Official Tinker Bell Half Marathon 2012 thread

Everybody just stop for a minute....take a deep breath...exhale.... We are all going to do fine. We need to stop worrying. We have been training (some a lot more than others!) Don't worry about PR's, it is too crowded for that. Just enjoy the experience. There is no other race like a Disney race, especially one geared to women. For those of you running/walking alone, you will be surrounded by "sisters." When you want a little company, just start talking to someone going about your pace. She might stay with you for a while. I was doing the Air Force Half Marathon by myself, wearing my Princess Half Marathon shirt when a woman started talking to me. She was by herself and had done the Princess. We started talking ended up doing the entire race together and set my PR!

For those of you (like me) who are not the fastest in the race, just keep an eye on your time. Stop for at least a couple of pictures. We have asked strangers and cast members to take our pictures on Main St. and in front of Cinderella's castle during the Princess. Much faster than standing in line for characters. Enjoy the experience!

So, everybody relaxed now? Good, because I have to go and finish sewing two tinker bell skirts!

You can tell the Tinker Bells are getting excited -- I don't usually have more than one page to catch up on! :goodvibes

Thank you all! I'm very excited about this trip, I've never really traveled alone and I'm looking forward to being to do exactly what I want, when I want! I'm staying at the Holiday Inn on Walnut. I'm anxious to see what Disneyland is like. I've been to Disneyworld several times, so it's nice to have a change!

It is a lot of fun and you may find that you are going to want to do it more often! :thumbsup2

We went over to Trader Sam's during the DL half weekend and it was a really fun place. It's VERY small so you may end up waiting a while for any kind of seat. I know I had a very yummy drink, but can't remember now which one it was...they have lots to try and I plan to try more this time. I highly recommend the crispy green beans as an appetizer or snack...they were really YUMMY!

Sounds yummy! :thumbsup2

I know I'm shallow but I really look forward to that after race drink. :drinking1

Bib #10575 here. I don't know if that's good or bad -- all I know is I'm going to run, Run, RUN away from that Balloon Lady. hehehe

I'm so excited yet feel so under-prepared at the same time. I tore some cartilage in my knee back in November. I can run 5-6miles ok, but haven't really been able to try a higher mileage run yet. I'm afraid if I do a longer run, I might injure myself more and will be unable to complete the Tink.

Even with my bum knee I'm still pacing at 13 - 14:30/mi, so even if I end up walking the last 7 miles, I think I'll be fine.

My Dr. has ok'd me to do the race - we'll probably do a cortisone shot a week before the race for some extra relief.

Then I'll have surgery in February, with enough time to get back to running and earn my Coast to Coast in Florida.

Hope everyone is having fun with the training and preparing :)

Sorry about the knee! :flower3: Glad that you are cleared to run and with your pacing I wouldn't be worried about balloon lady.

Do they even have balloon lady at DL or is it something else?

Hi everyone! I'm signed up for the 1/2 and the 5K, but will only be doing the 5K

I signed up months ago, just shortly after completing my 3rd 1/2 marathon in Indianapolis with a PR by 17 minutes!

I ended up getting pregnant in June and put off training due to exhaustion, then miscarried in August at 11 weeks. I got pregnant again in November and lost the baby very early. Since then, running has been put on the backburner.

Now that the race is almost here, I'm disappointed that I put my running on hold. I'm positive I can do the 5K with a jog/walk strategy...and just enjoy the atmosphere!

I will be a spectator for the Tinker Bell 1/2...and I'm excited about that! This is also my mother and I's first trip to Disneyland! After TONS of trips to Disneyworld, we're really excited to finally visit the Land!

So sorry for your losses. :flower3:

Thanks for cheering and hope that you can make it to some of the meets.

I'm starting to get a little nervous for this race now  I feel like my training has suffered this year, especially through the holidays (mostly derailed by sweets!!!) and my last 2 long runs have not been very good...at all! Then, unfortunately, my grandmother passed on friday so I'll be travelling and out of town for the next few days for her services. I think the hotel I'm at has a fitness center so I'm really hoping I can make it down to the treadmill and stay on schedule, but I'm also worried about the next few days of eating out for every meal. I like to really watch my eating once I get into tapering since I won't be working off as many calories and will be making a more conscious effort to rest and be off my feet. On top of all that, I've been battling a nagging back ache...I don't know if I pulled something or what, but it's really been giving me a hard time the last few days...and the 10 miles on saturday just made it worse. At one time, I thought I was really going to try for a PR at this race, but it's just not gonna happen. Maybe I should bring a camera along with me this time and just take pics and have fun. I hate adding to my load though...I already feel like a pack mule sometimes with the water belt bottle on the back, gels in one pouch on one side and ipod in the other pouch on the other side.

Summer, so sorry to hear about your grandmother. :flower3:

You've had a great running year -- I'm sure you'll be fine and have a great time. :tink:

Hope you enjoy Disneyland. Remember it is "the original" that Walt built and walked. There are so many hidden jems that the park has to offer.

So true! ::yes::

As for pre-race advice... whatcha looking for? Off the top of my head, things that I can think of are try not to fit in too much training if your training hasn't been 100% and you're trying to fit it all in. If you go to the gym and do strength training, the last 2 weeks, go lighter~1 you don't want to get hurt on something stupid and 2, it takes 2 weeks to start seeing any effects so it's not worth it to start. If you're a visualizer, think of some scenarios where something bad might go wrong to imagine how you can fix it or avoid it so you'll be prepared race day. If it's your 1st race and you're traveling down to DL, make a list of everything you'll need for the race that way you make sure you have everything packed. And once you get to DL, just enjoy everything and take everything in!

This was exactly what I was looking for -- thanks Kim! :goodvibes

I kind of just need to get a grip and stop worrying so much before I put so much pressure on myself that I forget this is supposed to be fun. :hippie:

Do the bib #s MEAN anything...? I have the highest I have seen yet, 20486, but then I have never run anything more than a 5K and registered very late... will I not be allowed to start in the right time group? Do they separate us by # instead of where we think we will pace? (we aren't trying to stand at the front by any means, but we do anticipate a 2:30ish finish and would like to not start out right in front of the balloon ladies going a snails pace o_O:

No one really knows for sure what bib numbers mean but I bet you will be fine no matter where you start. :goodvibes

My bib info does not show up. I can only guess it's because I registered with a group?

Check with your group maybe? :confused3

Sorry about your grandmother :(

If you can do 10, you can totally finish 13.1. I did Disneyland last year as a "fun" run, and had SO MUCH FUN. I stopped for any pictures I felt like, I enjoyed the other runners around me... it was a great experience. I'd rather do that any day, than feel miserable through a Disney race.

Great advice! :thumbsup2

Great advice !!!! On my runs I have been visualizing every mile and where it is on the map. And just keep saying to myself one mile down____to go! Just one step at a time.

Yes, I kind of have things broken down in segments in my mind. I think it does help to break it into smaller chunks. Heck, I've done training runs where I told myself one more song, one more lap, one more minute. :lmao:

On a side note, this will be my first half. I am excited and nervous at the same time. I will be walking and running the entire time. I am still trying to figure out if I'll be in costume or not. I am also trying to see if I will use KT tape or a knee brace. I have a tilted patella. Lucky me.

Sorry about the knee! :flower3:

Also final race instructions are up!!!

Thanks for letting us know. :goodvibes I put a link to the final race instructions in the first post of the thread.

I need to add a link to the regular Disboards meet, too.

I don't sweat it for a PR at a Disney race. It's too much fun to stop and take pictures with the characters. Enjoy the experience.

More great advice! ::yes::

I'm definitely getting nervous but also excited! Watching some of the people running this past weekend at WDW was inspiring! My goal is have fun and finish!!

It was fun to hear about everyone's experiences this week-end for sure! :goodvibes

I've already put Donald 2013 on my racing schedule. :donald:

I am also registered with a group (AFSP) and I'm not in the system....with runDisney. I am in Active.com under the correct birthdate, etc. so I think it's a case of our charity registering late (12/29/11) and we are waiting for runDisney to send the information to the group, then the woman who is running the show will send us the link. I emailed her today and she told us not to worry; that it may be taking longer because we are the smallest group and probably at the bottom of the list, priority-wise ;) So I'm not going to sweat it since I was able to find my information over at Active.com, even though I don't have a bib # yet.

If you're in Active you should be fine but I would call tomorrow just to be sure. :tink:

I am hpoing to get to where you are one day. So far I have/ am only doing Dinsey halfs. Last years Princess was my first race and even though I made it within my goal time I feel it will be pretty easy to PR at Tink. I am also doing the Princess again and may be looking to do more pics then, but I am not huge on Character pics so we will see. It might be hard for me to stop to take pics. Last year the only pic I did was the castel and it didn't turn out very well so I was kind of bummed I wasted the minute or so in line to get it.

Coast to coast coming for you soon! princess:

Part of the reason I stop for so many photos is because I'm hoping to get at least a couple good ones :). If you're not into character photos, I've also had good luck getting random cast members and spectators to take photos of me in front of attractions or other "scenic" places in the park. I still feel awkward asking, but everyone's really nice (even if they think I'm crazy) and I just have to remind myself that I'm never going to run into them again anyway.

I bet they don't think you're crazy, Lisa! :goodvibes

Anyone else finding it weird that we aren't getting E-mails about the waivers & race instructions, or anything else except the initial confirmation? Or is this typical with DL races? I get LOTS of E-mails about the races at WDW.

Yes, but at last years DL 1/2 I did not get my email with final details but DH did. :confused3
Also, DH and son signed up for the ChEAR squad (silver-we don't need park tickets we have annual passes & they will be all over the race route) and he had yet to get one email at all about the chEAR details.

Has anyone ever done the "Runners Tracking"?? Could you please explain how it's done and the details. Clueless with a iphone. Thanks

It's pretty cool & simple. You input your phone number or E-mail address (and I think you can add your FB account too, if you want) and at the 5K, 10K, & 15K marks (or other similar points) your time will be texted/E-mailed/posted to FB, including your pace and your estimated finish time.

Worked GREAT for me the last two W&D races, as my husband knew exactly when to look for me at the finish. I'll probably send them to him this year too, but he'll still be in FL. :)

Thanks for the info. I think we will do that so DH and son can stay updated.

Hi All! Nancy from the DIS Unplugged Disneyland Podcast here! I just wanted to stop in and say hello and let you know about some DISBoards Meets that are happening in conjunction with the Tinkerbell Half Marathon.

Because one of our podcast team is running in the Tink, raising money for Give Kids the World, we are hosting a few events that will add to that cause.

I hope you don't mind, but I wanted to share that information on the DIS Meets so you, or your ChEAR squads, may join us!

Thanks and hope to see many of you!

Tinkerbell Half Marathon Meet Plans

The DIS Disneyland Podcast Team will be hosting a fun DIS Meet the morning of the Tinkerbell Half Marathon to support our own DIS Podcaster (oc_tony) Tony Spittell's run to raise money for Power of 10’s support of Give Kids the World.

All of the Disneyland Podcast Team will be there, plus DISboards owner, Pete Werner and Walter Echols from the DIS Unplugged Orlando Podcast Team.

Just Announced!
If you are at the resort on Thursday night (January, 26), we are sponsoring a 7:00pm party at the Grand Californian to raise additional donations for Give Kids the World!
Appetizers and beverages will be provided.
Guests who make a contribution that night will receive a raffle ticket, to be drawn at our Tinkerbell Half Marathon Meet at Tarangoa Terrace on Sunday!

Please PM Nancy (yellowmickeyponchos) with your RSVP and we will make sure you get a call or text with the Villa room number. Thanks to the wonderful DISer, grizbuzz, who is hosting!

PRE-RACE DAY MEET

Looking at the race map, we’ve decided to gather for the first part of the meet at 5:30am (before the 5:45am race start) by the fountain between Tortilla Jo’s and House of Blues. Bring any noisemakers, clappers, horns, and banners you want to help encourage the runners as they move through Downtown Disney to mile-marker 4 and out into the streets of Anaheim.

If you would like to make a contribution for Give Kids the World at any part of the meet, we will have raffle tickets handy to give you in return for your donation. Those who brave that hour of the morning to help us cheer will get an additional raffle ticket! We’ll take your name down, as well, just in case you can’t make the final portion of the meet.

Several venues, including La Brea Bakery, will have coffee and warm beverages for sale, so grab one and head over!

FINISH LINE MEET

As the runners progress through the race, we’ll move our cheering squad down Disneyland Drive and over toward the finish line
, to help Tony get through that last mile.
Ideally, we’ll grab a spot on Katella, just west of Disneyland Drive, before the final turn into the Finish Line/Family Reunion area in the Simba parking lot.

POST-RACE VICTORY MEET

Finally, we’ll be reconvening around 11- 11:30am at the Tangaroa Terrace, in the heart of the Disneyland Hotel, for a post-race celebration and the biggest part of our DIS Meet
!
This is our favorite new venue for food, atmosphere, and fun and we want to share that with all of you!

At the Tangaroa, we’ll continue giving raffle tickets to those who contribute to Give Kids the World. At 1:00pm, we will have our drawing and you will not want to miss it!

Some of our raffle prizes include: collectible Disney posters, two CARS LAND lanyards from Mickey’s of Glendale, DIS lanyards, and maybe a couple of surprises- like chances to join Tony for a Dining Review or joining in on Disneyland Podcast recording!

In fact, if we collect our goal of $2000, Pete will be giving away a GRAND SURPRISE PRIZE! He promises that the winner WILL travel somewhere!

We hope to see many of you there. Even if you aren't running, your support means a lot to those who are, as well as all of the terminally ill children that are served by Give Kids the World. If you are a DISer running the race, send your ChEAR Squad over to join us, so they will have a fun crowd to hang with!

If you’d like to find out more about our goal and our charity, please check out Tony’s page:

That is my goal too. I never ran a half so I don't know what really to expect. If it takes me the full allotted time, so be it. I just really don't want to be swept. :(

Anyone else finding it weird that we aren't getting E-mails about the waivers & race instructions, or anything else except the initial confirmation? Or is this typical with DL races? I get LOTS of E-mails about the races at WDW.

It's not really typical of the Disney. The one I got in Dec. said that they were sending out 1 more for the waivers and instructions. I know w/ the DL 1/2, I got one every month or month and 1/2. I think it, like the release of the waivers and final instructions, was due to the holidays and the WDW races. But if I get another one, I can send it to you if you'd like.

Thought of another tip that I still use for every race. Remember to run your own race and don't pay attention or worry what/how everyone else is doing. Especially when you start out w/ everyone around you, it's easy to go out to fast or at a faster pace than you're used to and then run out of gas earlier than expected. It's better to start out a little slower and then once you get in your rythm, speed up to what you're used to.

Now that I have survived the marathon relay I am trying to get my head around another half marathon in less than three weeks! :scared1:

Really looking forward to not finishing the Tinkerbell in the warmer part of the day...the second half of the marathon (when you're slow!) was a little warm this year.

If you have questions, send an email to dlpodcast@wdwinfo.com.

Are any of these events on Facebook as "Events"?

I'd like to go but, my time management is not so great. :) FB syncs with my calendar. :)

I'm excited to hear about the fundraising for GKTW! My 5yr old is a "Wish" kid (She has leukemia), and her wish is to go to WDW. GKTW is a great organization :goodvibes

I still haven't received a single email except for registration confirmation. :confused3

I got one too. They have a virtual gift bag as well in the email. Anyone who didn't get one but wants it, pm me your email address and I can forward it on to you.

I just read this over here so I headed over to check my email and mine was there too. :cool1:

I have a quick question about the whole C2C thing. I would need to check in at the Princess expo for my wrist band, right? What do they do look up my Tink time? I shouldn't have to do anything for Tink, right? I just want to make sure. I would hate to lose out because I didn't do it right. :confused3

Yeah, that's all. You'll see the C2C booth where you check in. They should have the list of runners from Tink. It should be easy!
