Hmmm. Very interesting article about the new survivor.

Newly reupped host Jeff Probst will kick off the 39-day contest by dividing the competitors into tribes of four, separated into the politically incorrect groupings of Older Men vs. Older Women vs. Younger Men vs. Younger Women. The four tribes will become two in a "schoolyard pick" during the second episode.

That's a new one, but why the division again only on episode two? Doesn't seem like it will do much good to have the four tribes together for only 3 days. :confused3 I still can't wait!!!

The cast is up at cbs.com.

I'm a huge Survivor fan, and honestly, this cast looks boring to me. Very boring.

The Exile Island twist may be ok though.

And this is the 3rd season filmed in Panama.

Thanks Beth for the info. DH and I were wondering when it started. I love Survivor

I think the effect of alliances has made it necessary to come up with new ways of twisting things around. By changing the teams after just a few days, you have a greater chances of different combinations developing.

I had no idea that a new Survivor was starting so quick!! It seems like we always had so long to wait before! I'm Happy to hear this news!!
Feb. 2 will be here before you know it!!!

I didn't realize either it was starting so soon! I can't wait!

Just a little side note - you may want to put in your title there is a small spoiler in your post. (about the tribe divisions). I personally try to stay away from any info (except non-spoiler discussions here) about the show prior.

No big deal - I will live but it was a bit disapointing to have read it.

The subject of "spoiler" is touchy. Many people think a spoiler is info they have gotten from sources other than what the show itself releases. Info the show does not WANT you to know until you watch it unfold. The quote seemed to be something from a media article. It is out there publicly, meaning the show has felt that knowing this info before the show airs will not "ruin" anything.

I know all that your asking is for the OP to write SPOILER. But, it is very hard, when you are excited about something, like the OP is excited about the show starting so soon, to stop and think....oh, this is a spoiler, I need to note that. When it is not a spoiler.

I have to agree.

Information from "realitytvland.com" or the like...that's a spoiler.

information from yahoo...not really a spoiler.

if you don't want to hear anythign about anything survivor related...then avoid anything with 'survivor' in the subject. JMO

Well, I went in and read, no big deal. It had a link to the article, again no big deal I personally did not (or did not want to) click on the link to the article that contained the info about the game. That part tho about the tribe divisions was cut and pasted from the article for everyone to see.

Again no big deal, I will live. Just brining it up for others is all.

I'm not going to avoid survivor threads as there have been plenty here in the past which just discussed things. I honestly wasn't expecting to see any info now since the game hasn't started. I thought the thread was just other people like me excited it was starting back up.

Oh well.....didn't mean to upset the apple cart.

This is a great definition of what is and is not a Spoiler, provided by one of the most active and popular television-specific discussion forums:

What is a spoiler?

A spoiler is an important piece of information that, if someone wanted to watch the show without knowing what was going to happen, would spoil the show for him or her. Here are some things that would be considered spoilers:

* plot details for an episode that has not yet had its first American airing (usually first Eastern Time Zone airing)
* plot details for shows broadcast outside the U.S. and scheduled for broadcast in the U.S. at a later time (e.g. when CTV shows The O.C. early, when Degrassi: The Next Generation airs in Canada a couple months before the U.S., when BBC America was behind BBC UK showing The Office)
* unverified rumors about unaired episodes (since the information could be true)
* casting and show info NOT broken in mainstream press

Here are some things that would NOT be considered spoilers:

* content of aired previews and commercials and other first-party promo material
* details of episode after first American airing
* casting and show info broken in mainstream press
* historic facts as they pertain to a show plot (e.g. JFK assassination, Wild Bill's death, etc.)
* idle speculation
* anything that has happened on a show that is not going to be shown in the U.S. to the best of your knowledge (e.g. German Idol)

Cool info. So out of curiosity is the above a spoiler or not? LOL

not a spoiler...

" casting and show info NOT broken in mainstream press"

the cast/show info was announced in mainstream press....so not a spoiler.

:)

I think splitting the tribes is just grasping at straws to improve the show. Each season has gotten more and more boring and disappointing. Hopefully they will have some people on the show that actually try to survive off the land instead of waiting for the next food challenge. I think they should take the food challenges away anyway.

Yes, but see I chose not to read the article because I didn't want to take the chance of seeing or reading something I didn't want to see. Opening this thread, I had no choice because that info was cut and pasted from that article.

Note* I really am not upset by it, don't get me wrong. I just think its interesting at this point as to what some people may think is a spoiler and what others don't.

Look at the two coming back last season. Widely known because of people being spoiler happy, but the show never came out and officially said what was happening. It was treated as a surprise.

I like it at other forums when each thread has to be about one episode only. Lets people read the threads or not based on if they have seen the episode. In this case, being it hasn't started yet, there could be no talk of what was to happen in the first episode, i.e., tribe splits.

The four tribes is something they're doing to "stir the pot", so to speak in hopes to get new viewers. As someone said, Survivior is starting to get boring because it's all the same. I loved the orignial Survivor, but got a little sick of Survivor Outback. Didn't watch it as religiously. Didn't watch Africa, Marquesas and Thailand--at all!!! I started watching Amazon because CBS advertised that they were splitting the men and the women. Finally something different! So I tuned in. I do not consider this a spoiler as CBS released this information to the public. I'm sure as we get closer, you'll see previews on CBS to the same effect.

See, now I don't think they'll preview the splitting of the tribes. I think they will advertise something along a "tribe division never done before."

To me the way they split the tribes is pivitol in the whole scheme of things.

As Beth just pointed out, CBS is releasing this info ahead of time.

My point still stands about last season and anything else like that.

CNN.com has the following information about the show:

NEW YORK (AP) -- The next cast of CBS' "Survivor" will include a retired astronaut who flew in space three times, twice on the space shuttle Discovery.

The 12th version of the popular game, this time set in Panama, will feature tribes briefly separated by age and an exile where a contestant can profit after stomaching some time alone.

Dan Barry, a 52-year-old ex-astronaut from South Hadley, Massachusetts, is among the 16 cast members. Barry last flew in space in 2001, and he has four space walks to his name. A yoga instructor, nurse, engineer, lawyer, social worker and logging sports performer are among his competitors.

On "Survivor: Panama -- Exile Island," at least one cast member each episode will be sent alone to a separate island miles from the others. Hidden on the island, however, will be an immunity idol.

The next "Survivor" edition begins on CBS February 2.
