Official thread for the 2010 Princess 1/2 Marathon & 5k- REGSITRATION IS OPEN!

I agree with Army wife. The shoes make a huge difference. Mine fit fine for normal, everyday things, but for 13.1 mile, they were too small. I ended up losing 3 toe nails. I got a pair after the race that I have been wearing and my feet feel great. I don't have complaints after completing a long run anymore. Mine weren't too bad. They cost only $100. I will be getting a new pair in a few weeks before I start my training for the WDW full with Team in Training.

Should I be looking for a new shoe for training and running the half in Jan?? Does a shoe make a difference when only running a half? What I fear the most about going into the running store for a fitting is getting directed to the more expensive shoe rather than the best shoe for me.

Most importantly, during these economic times, I am trying to save whatever I can and really can't afford top of the line. Then again, I don't want to hurt myself especially having recovered from a replaced ACL 2 years ago. I am sure I am prone to injury.

What is the average cost of a running shoe? Do you have to pay extra for a fitting?

Yes, you should absolutely have the right shoes, especially if you have an ACL issue. A half is still 13 miles and 2 to 3 or more hours on your feet. Go to a running store, tell them your budget and they will certainly help you out. I have never paid more than $100 for running shoes because I'm just cheap. The fitting should be part of their service.

Once you find the model and brand of shoe that works for you, you can shop online to get them cheaper as the companies bring in new models. We have a WISH team discount at runningwarehouse.com. Just click on the team discounts thing at the top right, then type WISHD in the box and hit enter for 15% off (excludes Mizuno and ASICS).

Thanks to syko for leading me here :)

I'm scared but excited to be joining everyone for this. I haven't registerd yet due to finances but have almost got the entry fee together so I will hopefully an "official" registrant soon. In the meantime, I'll just keep clicking away at my super slow training routine as the days tick by.

Welcome! What kind of training plan are you using?

Last year it was Make a Wish

Thanks, acourtwdw!

I am very excited for this, as is my girlfriend. Our DHs are even getting into "training". I even made an excel spread sheet for my daily walking. Last weekend, I walked 5 miles each day and on Sunday I did it in 1 hour and 10 minutes! I've even tried to increase my weekday morning mileage to more than 3 miles, if I have time. When the kids go back to school, that's going to be harder to do, though.

I wonder what the ratio is for walkers to runners in the race, and how crowded the walkers "corral" is.

I was wondering why the other events have training shirts you can purchase and the Princess Half did not so I contacted WDW sports. They responded (quite quickly I might add!) that they were still working on getting it finalized but a "Princess in Training" shirt would be up for sale soon. :yay:

Did they have these last year? Anyone know what they looked like?

I like the idea someone had about the Disney princess CD music to train too. I was just wondering...does the CD have only the slow songs or the more upbeat ones from the movies as well? (Gotta keep those feet moving!)

Wow, GO MICKEYMOM!!!! 5 miles in 1:10?? That's super fantastic! Congrats!!! I know I'll get there eventually but right now I can't comprehend 5 miles at a time :P

The only race that has ever had a "in training" shirt has been the marathon, so this is new!!!!

Oooh. A princess in training run shirt would be awesome. I'm seriously contemplating the Princess half, and a shirt to help me train might be the motivation I need. They do have "training for Disney 2010" shirts on disneyshopping.com. They don't specifically state "marathon" so I was thinking of ordering one of those, but if a Princess one might be on it's way I'll have to wait.

Oh, someone else mentioned wondering how crowded the walking corral would be--what if you plan to run as much as possible--but will walk if you need to--would you register as a walker then? Thanks!

The corrals go by what time you put to finish in on your registration. So, if you picked the latest time, then you will automatically be placed in the last corral.
And to get into the first corral, you need proof of finishing time from a previous race.
I believe last year,i picked my time to finish as the next to the last choice -- so i purposely wouldn't be in the last corral. I was in "corral B" last time, which i loved, and that's what i am planning for next March as well. However, I know Lauren and her DH were in the last corral, and they did just fine.
I think there were about 900+ people who finished after me, which i was happy with..My time was about 3:15. I am shooting for 3:00 this year..
You can not switch corrals once you are assigned, they have people who will be checking your bib number - as your corral is on your bib.

On a side note - just wanted to share -- i joined Weight Watchers in March after i got back from the Princess, and just hit my 10% goal (which is 19 lb.s) - actually , i passed it - i am down 20lbs !!! I am so excited and feel so much better -- now i am shooting for the next 10lb mark - I hope to be 30-35lbs less for the 2010 race as i was for this years.

Last corrall is fine. It didn't make any difference to us.

Stacy: Congrates on your WW goals! That's awesome!

oops! missed your post :(

I've been just walking for regular exercise and hadn't really begun training. I plan to start the Couch to 5k this week although I'm sure I'll have to modify it a bit. Once my body remembers it knows how to do this (I'm optimistic...) I'm going to move on to Bingham's Half Marathon plan. The walking version worked for me in 2003 so I'm going to try and do a run/walk this time around since I'll need to cut my time down by quite a bit if I want pictures with the princesses along the route

I was an idiot in 2003...I trained for six months and then three months before the race I stopped. Didn't run again until race day. I ended up getting injured (is anyone surprised? I'm not!) and have stayed away from running since then. That's one of the main reasons I signed up here at WISH...I know I have it in me to give up as the training becomes a grind and I wanted to make sure I had somewhere that would hold me accountable and kick my tush into gear if I try and start skimping on my training

Oh LAAAAUUURREENNN... Are you being tempted yet??? ;)

The songs on the cd are:
If you can dream
Part of your world
A whole new world
Just around the riverbend
Colors of the wind
Some day my prince will come
So this is love
Once upon a dream
Can you feel the love tonight
Belle
Feflection
Kiss the girl

Congratulations! Awesome job! And good luck and pixie dust as you continue on your way!

Congrats Caitsmama!:cheer2:

Hope everyone has had a great weekend and training!!!

Did I see there was a rumor about a Princess in Training shirt? That would be sooo awesome! Wish they'd had that last year. Hope they have tons of excellent stuff for you all in 2010!!!

Keep up the excellent work everyone!!! :woohoo:

I have signed up for the 1/2. I am very nervous I have only done a couple of 2 mile walks.

I am in week 2 of the couch to 5k and think I will check out the book from your recommendations.

Julie

:welcome: Julie You have plenty of time to train, and there are plenty of people here who have used the c25K and have done many races since.

I didn't see this here yet, so I thought I would post it.
