Anyone know if SOG has a driving range and if so is there a fee for using it?

SOG doesn't have a driving range. I'm not sure about the courses surrounding it. We play golf, but not when we're in the World.

Fireworks can be seen from the roof of the parking garage. We've never had a room where you can see the fireworks. I don't think there are very many rooms you can see the fireworks from because of how SOG is laid out.

Last visit the only fireworks we saw were from the roof of the parking garage.
But on another trip we were on the fourth floor, new building facing old section and we filmed the MNSSHP fireworks at MK from our balcony. As a matter of fact, we taped it two different nights on that trip. Last trip we were on the fifth and had to go to the roof to see fireworks. If I hadn't taped it before I would question myself about where we were, but I have it.

When we went on our cruise, we stayed at The Castle on International Drive, eighth floor, and watched the fireworks from MK. It was 9 p.m. and based on what I saw, I figured it was MK.

This will be my first trip to SOG but I really like the idea of a guard shack. I know it tends to be a pain, having lived in base housing it was, but it keeps trouble away. I've heard the great thing about staying at SOG is that everyone has something in common (being military in some way) and everyone is polite and respectable. I'm so excited!

All true about everyone having something in common and how polite everyone is. Everyone says hello to each other. You just don't have the noise level or unmonitored kids like you'll find in some hotels/resorts. As for keeping trouble away, there's not a great deal of crime on WDW property so you're fairly safe as long as you don't do something risky like walking late at night alone. But on the SOG property, you can feel perfectly safe anywhere alone in and right around the resort.

Everyone says hello to each other.

Just a note about friendly people.

The last time we were there was for the marathon in January. There were a couple of guys in the lobby who were doing the Goofy Marathon (5K on Friday, 1/2 Marathon Saturday, and Full Marathon Sunday). They had just finished the 5K and were dressed in ballet tutus and had big goofy heads on top of their heads. They looked incredibly funny. They were a people magnet. There were people all over the place taking pictures and talking to them. Kids loved them. That's the kind of people who stay here.

I don't really think of it as a "guard" shack. The reason being that you can walk onto the property without question. Note: walk on. I usually ride the monorail to the Poly and walk over. No one has ever stopped me and asked for resort ID or military ID.

Of course, when I went with just my DD I would only stay at SOG because I felt more secure. I did consider the guy in the driveway as a "guard" then.:goodvibes

Hi everyone ! We are staying at SOG from May 19-28. This will be our first stay there and I am so excited to be able to try it !

I don't know much about the layout, location of rooms, ect. and was hoping someone here could help. I also don't really know the diffrence ebtween the two pools.

I have two kids 3yo and 10yo so we would like to be somewhat close to the pool (we don't don't have to facing it just don't want to hike a long way to get there). From what I read the "older" rooms have larger fridges but I am not sure where these are located ?!

So is there a room location I could request that has the larger fridge and is closer to the pool than other locations ?!

I thought some of you might find these interesting. Until recently, the mapping websites, like Google Maps, only had satellite images of the old SoG. Now they have updated images. Here's a comparison.

Look at this post from bigAWL. It shows the pools and the old and new section. We've had rooms both places and there's things we like about both sections. I never ask for specific sections (unless I want poolside). I like to be surprised.

We will be there from May 21-27. We stayed last year with a room on the 2nd floor facing the Millpond Pool. We just walked down the hall and down the elevator to the pool. They have a kiddie pool for your younger child and a deeper for the older. There is also a nice little playground for your 3yr old. My granddaughter was 3 last year and it was nice. I'm pretty sure this is the old section. Someone correct me if I am wrong. I read somewhere that there is a divider wall in the rooms in the older section, and we did have one. You will love the resort. Last year was our first stay there and I don't think I will stay anywhere else. Hope to see ya there. I will be traveling with a 4yr old and a 10yr old girl. Maybe our kids will make friends and be swiming together!! Hope this helps you.

Just wanted to mention how nice it is to go to the Poly and use there stuff. We stayed last Oct. and enjoyed the food court and pool. The arcade is new and much better than the old one from 10+ years ago. We always watch the fireworks from the Poly beach. The kids play in the sand and the adults get a Mai Tai from the bar. SoG guest are allowed to use the pool at other resorts. (except Grand Fl and Contemporary I think) Our bunch of kids loved the volcano slide. We love Sog but the Poly is almost a second home while we are there. Also nobody seems to mention how good the food is at the Italian restaurant at SoG. Great for a special occasion and fairly kids friendly for those 4+. We are going back in Sept. The only changes will be to bring our own water and some yougurt and lunchables. The Evergreens has great bugers. Oh almost forgot, in the Evergreens arcade area is a penny squisher machine with all the armed forces insignia for a great souviner.

 Thanks for mentioning that. I love pressed pennies! I would be over the moon for an armed forces one.

:confused3 I didn't know we could use the other resort pools. I've stayed at SOG 7 times and don't remember seeing anything about using anyone else's pool.
Nice to know, but we don't spend that much time just "hanging out" when we are there.

I have never heard that SOG guests can use the pool at other resorts. Can anyone else verify this? I was under the impression that only DVC guests were allowed this priviledge. I know that during extremely busy times of year, several of the resorts ask for room key in order to use the pool. Does anyone else have additional information on this?

I doubt SOG guests can use WDW resort pools. I would not do it.

I just sent SOG an email requesting information about pool hopping. I'll post the response when I receive it. I've never heard of this privilege. Pool hopping is not allowed for regular Disney resort guests, so it would be surprising if SOG guests could do it. It's one of those subjects that tends to get people's dander up. :rolleyes2

speaking of pools...
I fly in at 4pm and have dinner reservations at 745 at chef mickeys, do you think in between there will be enough time for my kids to go for a dip in the pool? how early do you think we should leave for CM?
Also , has anyone ever watched wished from the poly .. hoping we'd have enough time after CM to make it to the poly to watch wishes .. or is there a better place at the contemporary we could watch it. We wont have our park tickets yet so we cant go inside the park that night.

When I made our reservation one of the room options was a sleeper sofa or a day bed. I think the sleeper sofa option is the older section and the day bed is the newer one. Hope this helps anyone trying for one section or the other. When we stayed before the older room couch pulled out like a bed and in the new rooms the sofa just kinda fliped in place for a single bed. Does that make sense?

This is the reason I did not even find it necessary to e-mail SOG. It seems almost too obvious an answer. I'd like to see the response when you get it. :)

I agree. I've seen some pretty heated disputes abot pool hopping. Doesn't get my dander up. I know what my hotel offers and does not offer and if I can't get what I need out of one, I will reserve a room at a hotel that does. For us, a themed pool with a slide is not important. However, I prefer to be in a pool where people have common sense to go to the bathroom in a toilet and not pick zits while in the water. ;)
