OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Not sure if this has been asked on this thread yet but I thought it's worth asking again (truth be told I don't feel like skimming every page). I was just wondering how many folks or if it's necessary to carry your own water (fuel belt, etc.). I typically like to have a sip or 2 of water at about every mile. Do you think it's possible to rely on course water alone. Also, do they supply small bottles of water or the little paper cup with a mouthful of water. This is my first 1/2 so trying to figure out as much as I can before hand.

Thanks,

Chris

I always carry a bottle of water with me just in case, but I've never done a Disney race that they didn't have plenty of water/powerade. I actually had a fuel belt the first couple marathons, but really didn't use it at all. For the fluids on course you get a paper cup. I know it sounds silly, but if you plan on running through the stops you may want to practice drinking out of one(Folding a cup, etc) so you don't end up wearing it.

Good Luck!
Chris

I start with a bottle of water or sport drink. I too like a sip at the mile posts and both weekend races average about a1.5 miles in their first halves. After you hit about the half mark (remarkably just after leaving MK), the stations are more frequent and kind of even.

I would think brink a throw down bottle so you do not have to worry about the bouncing of the belt.

As my friend GoofinOhio said, the fluids are in cups. They are poured just under half full on average so you are getting 2-3 oz per cup. Also, the PowerAde is generally half strength, so expect it to taste a little diluted....

I'm having some doubts about running the marathon so I thought I'd look here for some encouragement!
January will be my 1st full marathon. My 1st race ever was the Disney Half in January. Since then I have finished 2 additional half marathons this year. I'm not super speedy (my fastest half was 2:30-ish and my most recent around 2:40 in October). My training has been plagued by issues this fall. My oldest son was hospitalized (doing better but still has lots of doctor appts), my job has become insanely busy, and I'm recovering from a muscle injury to my back that made me able to walk but not run for 2 weeks. My longest "run" was a 14 mile walk. My last scheduled 15 mile run didn't happen because I had to take a patient to the OR instead (priorities, right? ;) ).
I'm scheduled for 15 miler this weekend and I'm planning run 30 sec/walk 30 sec as long as my back feels good. I will walk more if I think I need to.
I just feel a little behind in my training and overwhelmed by the enormity of these long runs. I think I can still get a 17 miler and 20 miler done before race day but I'm starting to worry!

Thanks,
Amanda

From one of my favorite movies Caddyshack

"Oh, yes... well... Just snake a tube down her throat and I'll be there in 4 or 5 hours." - Dr. Beeper.

Take care of your priorities and back. You are well on the way to being there. Do try to get your weekday runs in and push up the effort (assuming you do not feel them in your back). Let the long runs come as they will. Keep to your plan and try to get them in. Again, you do not want to spend 2-4 weeks out due to a back or other injury issue. Range your distance goals, or even put a time period out as your goal – its much easier to commit to 3 hours than 16 miles. So I would range your next run as a 14-16 mile run, and so on. Focus on getting the 17. If you still have time, try to get another 17 ish in and call it good. You will be OK in the marathon if you get a couple 17-18 milers in. It’s actually better mentally to readjust the goal now, and then meet the goal than it is to miss a goal on the day of the run, or worse, push to get a 20 in then come up injured.

I am sure you are working your back with PT in mind. Make that a priority over most anything else. An injury anywhere from the core down can lead to a secondary injury due to favoring the first injury.

Hang in there. Keep mental notes on how your runs feel, what you do when an issue arises and how you work through the issue. You will be ready if you get just a few more additional miles on top of your current level. Finally, in the event you cannot get any additional distance increases.... you can still finish the race. It just may not be pretty.

I just wanted to share our best time yet in our training for the 5k!!

As you know, I've run a few 5k races but DH is new to it. He has been setting the pace and I just coach and encourage him along the way. He been steadily improving on how much he runs compared to how much he walks. Well, tonight he ran the most ever and our time was 39 minutes!! :woohoo:

Our goal was to try and make it under 40 minutes during the race and I think we should now try for 35! I'm so proud of him!!

Great job! It's always great to have a goal, push through it then set a new one

My experience with Disney is that there are adequate, well-placed, water stops. HOWEVER, it seems to never fail that when I need to squeeze a Gel pack or pop a Shot Block in my mouth, I have just passed a water stop and the next one is over a mile ahead. Therefore, I wear a two-bottle fuel belt to carry water just to rinse down Gels and Shot Blocks. The belt has never been a hindrance on any run and sometimes I forget that I am wearing it. The biggest annoyance of the belt is forgetting to take it off before sitting in the car thus, getting the bottles jammed into my kidneys.

I have the 4 bottle Fuel Belt and take 2 bottles for the same reason.

I am not running in this year but the plan is my dad and I are running in 2013 which hotels are host hotels?

Well, I finally got out for a good run since three weeks ago, before I got sick. I did 14 miles in 2:12, may have been slower, but for first time back out isn't bad. I needed some fuel around 14, also earlier than usual. But I think that is due to the fact that this damn hot weather will not leave Florida and I ran at midday, the hottest time of the day. I started with it being 83 degrees, feeling like 88. That sun killed me the whole time, it was run to shade to shade. The path I ran only had 5 water stops for the 14 miles and a deadly stretch where it is 5 miles without water, no shade and direct sunlight. That part was not looking forward to, but makes getting the length a lot easier. But at least race day, it won't be as hot, more water stops and fuel throughout the race. I had to get out and do a run longer than a half since I have the full next weekend, I'm going out again this weekend for a mid-level distance of 6-10 miles and maybe one short race later in the week just to get ready. It feels great to run again not being sick and not being exhausted all the time. Just need to catch up where I was and continue moving forward. But treating myself to Cape May at Beach Club tomorrow for dinner and Osborne Lights Festival before that. January race is almost here, getting a lot closer than it feels, keep training, stay healthy and injury free or get healthy.:yay:

Actually, all resorts are host resorts. All will have marathon busing to both the expo and ALL races through the weekend.

Thanks Coach! That helps a lot. I actually had a typo in my previous post and my plan for Saturday is 17 miles. I think I can. I think I can.

Hello everyone!

Just joining in, there is some great advice on this thread. I'm running the half in January. This is my first WDW race, though I have done the DL half twice.

From the previous posts, it looks like since I was in Corral E at DL I can expect to probably be in the same corral for this half.

Since the WDW half has a lot more runners than the DL half, are the corrals for WDW larger? Meaning are more people put in the same number of corrals?

Thanks!

(Sorry if this has already been asked. I haven't read every post in the
thread.)

Its been awhile since I looked seriously at the DL set up... Though from a quick review, I would expect you to corralled similarly.

My husband is out running a 16 mile run as I type. If he rans about a 2 hour half, does anyone know what corral that would put him in?
I cant wait to go!!! We will be there in 49 days...

B. It may fall to C. It really depends on the number of entries and what times they make the cuts at.

"Bus if you want to experience the first sign of post marathon legs - that is the real funny feeling of walking down the steps for the first time post race."

"Since this is the year where we should have relatively warm temps, I would think the bus is in order."

The two quotes above are by Coach and were taken from another thread.

The Bus quote....oh my...will they have some one to catch me if I am unable to complete those stairs? That gives me horrible visions of me face planting.

So...the weather is going to be nice? I sure hope so. If it looks like it could be nasty I may check into getting a rental car.

New subject..toenails. Is there a secret to keeping them healthy? I thought once the toenail fell off thing would get better, but one has taken a turn for the worse.
