OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Weekend Training update.

Well on my way to getting goofy ready. I ended up with a back to back set of runs this weekend due to an equipment malfunction. I make long runs in CW-x tights and had a seam blow out on Saturday. It is the second failure of one of their products. I am going to pursue this with CW-x as one would be understandable but two in 11 months seems high.

So I went out at a slow 12 minute pace on Saturday and got 7 in with the little running post failure. My goal was a 2:15-2:30 run. After limping home I was going to call it good. I would have but as I woke up this AM i thought I am behind so why not try for longer run. So I hit the TM this AM. I set the machine up so I would average a 13 ish pace. Before I knew it, 2:30 passed and I was 11 something miles down the road. When looking at this on paper it seems so slow, but for this year and coming from a couch period earlier in the year.... well not so bad.

Normally, I watch sports movies or Disney movies as I run. This morning I was able find Secretariat for most of the run. Now one would not think that a movie about a horse would be inspirational... this was one of the better movies I have plugged in for a run in a long time.

Well gotta go.

Thanks for listening.

Just finished week 5 of my couch to 5K program...running the 5K in January! Can't wait....do they have the dates for the 5K's in 2012 yet?

Hey coach, glad you were able to get some good time in this weekend. :goodvibes

Before I knew it, 2:30 passed and I was 11 something miles down the road.

You'll have to let me know what the secret is! While I find the treadmill indispensable for doing speedwork and tempo runs, I do have my moments of saying "can't I turn this off now". Good for you that you had great training weekend.

I did 13 yesterday. It went pretty well--fairly even splits, which is good since it was really windy. More than once I came to a slight downhill thinking I would get a nice little recovery only to find the wind pushing me back. I did at least get a minor, short burst of tailwind as I was climbing my last little hill of the day.

Last couple of weeks my legs have felt somewhat sore late Sunday into Monday. (Even after the post-run yoga stretches) Nothing bothersome, but it is not something that I have had in a long time. Guess my body still has a lot of endurance catch-up to do.

Off to the gym for some light pool work and PT exercises. DH has off today (in what we refer to in these parts as "Kill a deer in honor of a Veteran Day". It's the negotiated holiday for Veteran's Day, but it is historically really for the opening of firearm deer season)

Did my third race in my life, and first 15K, called the Stockadeathon - awesome race - would totally recommend it if you are in upstate ny. Had some MASSIVE hills. I ran the whole thing without stopping, even passed some people on the hills and did 1:49. I wanted to get under 2 hours so I was REALLY happy. Anyone have a guess as to which corral this would get me in for the 1/2? When I signed up for it, I hadn't run a minute in my life!

Hi everyone!! I posted on here a while ago and haven't been on the running threads in a while! I am signed up for the marathon and it will be my first :thumbsup2 I did my first half marathon at the wine and dine in 2010 :goodvibes

I just completed a half marathon in Richmond, VA this past weekend with my fastest time - 3 hours 3 minutes (yes I am a slow poke - I train with a group called the penguins here :rotfl:). I am pretty nervous about being swept during the race but hoping for the best. Just wanted to say hi again and I have enjoyed reading some advice you guys have shared on here...hopefully I will keep more in touch with the thread now

Good job on the weekend races/training!

Cewait...I did 11 on the TM Saturday, but ended up splitting it up because I got sort of misled as to what time I had to be at another function. Ended up splitting it up and doing 6.5 miles, then went to the other thing for 2 hours, then back to the TM to do another 4.5 miles. It took 2:20 at my ez pace, which really didn't feel so ez by the end of it. But then, some of that was probably boredom. I didn't feel like watching TV (don't usually--bike trainer is a different thing--I love to watch races while I ride), so it was me and the ipod. Good thing is, due to travel I should only have one more 'long run' on the treadmill.

For the MFM poster with the walk/run stuff....I agree to only go up to 14 instead of jumping to 16, though I do think with the more walking than running ratios, the chance of injury is lessened somewhat. Keep playing with those ratios and don't be afraid to push it just a little bit (not a lot, as you have mileage to build up as well). Even 3:30 min walk/1 min run will buy you a few minutes.

has the marathon course changed at all then? or the same as last year?

No appreciable changes in 2012 from 2011. The small changes are mostly associated with the relay and a possible movement of an aid station

Great Job! You race equates to a 2:34 half. That would put you in the C corral "ISH" Until the runner numbers start to come out, predicting an exact corral is difficult.

Had my first real run since my heel injury and there was nothing "real" about it. It was actually very disappointing! 15/min mile pace (I am usually at 13),no energy whatsoever and started feeling pain in my right heel instead of my left this time. Trying hard to stay positive but it ain't easy. I have to admit that I was stupid and did everything that a runner shouldn't do: didn't fuel up enough, not properly hydrated and tried new shoes for the run. My fault.

I also looked at the updated course map on the Marathon website and it still shows that we wouldn't be going by the Yacht Club/ Beach Club resorts. Is that a mistake that they will eventually correct or have they changed the course for good?

Hope everyone else had great long runs this weekend :)

Might help if you to check into Chi Running and get away from the heel plant strike. I morphed from Chi Walking into my current way of walking bring my pace down to a 10:15 for this past Saturday's 13.25 mile long walk in preparation for the upcoming Space Coast Half Marathon Nov. 27th.

Not only do my 61 year old heels not like the typical walking stride but my knees dislike it even more and if I were to try running, most likely I would wind up on the ground.

Hi Everyone-

Anyone have first-hand experience with the race retreat? My partner is running the Marathon and I have purchased the Platinum Chear Squad package.

Wanted to know what type of set up I can expect. Would anyone happen to have a link to some photos from past years?

Very excited about this.

I'm also curious about both the ChEAR Squad and Race Retreat. My DH is running the marathon (his first) and I'll be cheering him on. Are the benefits of these worth the extra money? Sounds like I'd need to get the platinum package if I want entry into the Race Retreat, so wondering if the $200 is worth it or would be better spent elsewhere? And do these ever sell out?

Thanks for any thoughts, experiences, etc.

We have not participated in these packages.... But reading these two posts I am thinking that you believe you as spectator will be waiting in the tent with your runner. Note that the tent is reserved for runners until 5:30 am. Runners are already in the start corrals by this time. So if your runner has the ertreat package and you the chear package, the only time you will be in the tent together is post race. Sorry, but i Hope this helps your decision.

Hello All,

Stumbled onto this site and found it very informative. Thought I would join in.

Training for my first Goofy and seriously considering making it Dopey to get it all over with at once. Trying to get as much training in as possible and stay healthy before the snow flies (again).

Welcome....

You will find this site helpful and one where you will find a supportive family. Feel free to ask any questions. dopey is a great way to knock them all out....well now that we have the relay, almost all out.

Any one have any experience with an injury 9 weeks out? The ortho says it's post tib tendonitis and the athletic trainer who specializes in running injuries says either shin splints or a stress fracture (my pain is localized about an inch above the knobby ankle bone right on the bone not on the soft tissue. Can't get a definite answer without an MRI or bone scan.)

I had completed an 8 mile the prior week and was in the middle of my 9 mile last weekend when the pain got too bad to continue. Both docs said RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation) and stay off it until I can run without pain. I have no pain at all now when walking but plan to stay off of it until December 1st, per their advice. I've switched over my training to include a little elliptical, a little bike and a lot of swimming.

So - my question - has anyone successfully gotten back into their training program after taking a month off this close to the race? I'm signed up for the half marathon. Assuming I can run again starting December 1st - that gives me about 5 weeks to get to where I need to be to at least finish the race. Possible?

The good news is that they both have a soft tissue answer. Do you have access to a tuning fork. If so, the old school method of diagnosing a stress fracture is to rap the fork and press the handle into the honey area near the pain. That will definitely tell you if you have a sf...though not 100% rule one out.

Regardless, follow the doctors orders and RICE. I have to say that I would ask about the elliptical, if not already asked. I have found orthos tend to want you to avoid all weight bearing activities.

Now do not worry. You have enough miles to get through the half. Swim, row, cycle, water run, arm cycle so that you get a great cardio workout. You will lose a little cardio during this it me, but you will retain a lot more as long as you keep moving.

Adjust your Kcal intake down some. Not much, but you are lowing your output so a small intake adjustment may be necessary. Once released, take the first couple weeks easy. Try getting up to 3 miles the first week and 6 the second. If those go well try 8-10 the next week, lower on Christmas weekend and then back to 9 for New years weekend. You will be good to go.

Now, if you feel the pain return once released, do not push through, try to preserve cardio as in above and get back to the doctor. Consult with them about the better path forward.

Good luck. While convalescing, make sure to up you calcium and continue through the marathon weekend...just to help out in case.

ADDED- I meant to say up from that I am very sorry to hear that you have come up lame. It is early enough that you still have hope of starting and finishing the race.
