OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

"Bus if you want to experience the first sign of post marathon legs - that is the real funny feeling of walking down the steps for the first time post race."

"Since this is the year where we should have relatively warm temps, I would think the bus is in order."

The two quotes above are by Coach and were taken from another thread.

The Bus quote....oh my...will they have some one to catch me if I am unable to complete those stairs? That gives me horrible visions of me face planting.

So...the weather is going to be nice? I sure hope so. If it looks like it could be nasty I may check into getting a rental car.

New subject..toenails. Is there a secret to keeping them healthy? I thought once the toenail fell off thing would get better, but one has taken a turn for the worse.

Toe nails, short and rounded corners. After losing my big one on the left foot for the umpteenth time, I caught a fungus under the nail. It is ugly, does not grow well and crumbles. Yuck.

And make sure the shoe you are running in is long enough. I think my feet have grown slightly in the couple of years I have been into endurance sports. Well, after losing a few nails after going black and blue just after 70.3 triathlons and marathons, I switched to a half size larger sneaker. Going on 6 months now with a few events and no ruined nails.

Also agree on keeping those nails short and trim. Less impacting with shoe end.

DS just ran his first race. A 10K for time placement for the relay that he will be running with his sister. Very small race, and very cold (32 degrees). He registered this morning and was number 30.
So, what kind of corral placement can he expect..not sure of actually time, but he ran 44 or 45 min?

Are you serious, Coach? corral A?
I told him B would be good. Ah, to be 18, such youth and speed.

Fairly confident... a 45 10k = roughly a buck 40 half (1:40) - assuming he trains up to the distance....

That time is a top 625 time (out of 22000) - his bib number this Am is close to his age group placing - top 45.

Give him a big hug - if he will let you!

He would let me, but he is away at college so the hug will have to wait until he arrives home in a few days. He and his sister (also in college) plan to do most of their training when they are home on break. I think they have done up to a 7 mile LR. They will do a 10- 12 mile LR in Dec. and probably some speed work at the gym. DD has run the Princess twice.

Just an update... I intended to run 17 miles this morning but I stupidly miscalculated my route (maybe Santa will bring me a Garmin?) and ran 15.34 miles instead. It felt pretty good. I need to up my fueling and I was surprised to find I was a bit under-dressed for our cold morning. I finished in 3:30 which isn't terrible. I definitely could have gone the extra 1.66 miles if I had realized my mistake before showering and dressing.

Ran a 5 mile run yesterday and felt pretty good. Left heel injury isn't too bad and felt absolutely no pain in my right foot contrary to last week.

I need to run at least 13 tomorrow... wish me luck :yay:

As for the toe nail issue, it happened to me once and I never want to have it again! Luckily I didn't lose my nail but it was black and blue and very painful. Soaking it helped tremendously. Since then, I have kept them much shorter and have made sure that my shoes fit properly in that area.

Amanda- great job on that 3h30 time for 15+ miles!!!

Forgot to ask before to those who have done the 5k...

Would I have time to make it for a 9h20 breakfast at Ohana's after the 5k???

I would leave straight from Epcot.

Thanks for your imput in advance :)

I signed up for the 1/2 back in the beginning of october and injured my left ankle a week ago. Now i am on a air-boot and didn't get to train for the 1/2. Not sure what had happen to my ankle. Just got swollen and it was painful. Doctor said i could POSSIBLY do the half when january comes around. Lets hope so.

Good luck. Take time to heal up. For most of us, a race is far less important that healing.

I have a bit of a bizarre question. I was wondering what some of the experienced folks on here protect their....um.....more sensitive areas of the chest region. I just did my 11 mile training run and they are on fire. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

Body Glide or vaseline and bandaids. Amazing how many guys I saw cross the finish line at the Freep marathon with bloody shirts.

What's his hurry? Tell him to slow down and enjoy the sites. :rotfl2: Corral A or at the very worst B is my guess.

That's an awesome time.

I'm a band aid kind guy. I have forgotten at some races and it hurts and not pretty. Also, some use body glide.

SlapWhitey: Body Glide is your friend. I never do a run without using it in various areas to protect from chafing. I have never experienced any impact of it staining my running gear.

ATM: This morning I ran an 11-Mile Long Run with MotoMiker. I didn't figure on it being that dark at 6AM but luckily I had my headlamp in the car. We took it at a nice slow 11:00/mm pace for the whole run, getting caught up on recent events and enjoying the scenery of the running path. There is nothing better than running with a buddy to help the miles melt away. Before we knew it, the run was over! My longest training run ever is in the bag!

The only unfortunate thing was that when we got back to our cars, his had a flat tire. So I dropped him at home as I continued on to weigh in at Weight Watchers (I didn't lose any pounds but I didn't gain any either). Then I was off to church. It's been a great day -- even if it did start at 4:50am!

Happy running to everyone, and PD to all in need! Keep your eyes on your goal and believe you'll reach it! Because you have what it takes to make it happen!

Chris,

I use small dot bandaids. They came in a box of 50+/- for $2 @ target. I have looked into the nip guards, but they are expensive. I have not tried the body glide but have heard that long term it can stain your running shirts. Lastly, some have said that when wearing tight compression type (Under Armor) they don't have problems. But for my money the dots were the simplist and cheapest method. You might have to do some trimming, but the dots have stayed on for my races and long runs.

Been sick the last week and a half and fallen behind on my training. Missed my 16 miler this weekend. Looks like I'll drop out either my 18 or 20 miler in December and pickup with the 16 on my long next run.

Coach Charles - I've noticed that you have recommended that those planning on walking the half do some walking training for the smaller muscles. Would that recommendation hold true for some training with intervals? I currently plan on running for about a half hour the day of the half and then walk the rest. The day of the full I plan on intervaling the whole race.

Thanks,

Cam

Since we're on the topic of things rubbing, I have a question about my feet.

First half marathon two years ago I developed deep blisters on the balls of both feet - somewhere between nickel and quarter sized. When I say deep there was nothing to see on the surface, but they hurt like the dickens and you could feel the void if you pressed where it hurt. The pain faded quickly but was intense during the race. After a couple months they finally surfaced.

I've done three other halfs and it's happened once, though not as early and not as badly as the first time. I put body glide or deodorant on my feet. I wear double layer (Wright) socks. Now I'm training for a full with a goal of finishing. As my runs are getting longer I'm feeling the heat on my soles.

When I googled blisters it was always the edges and corners that people cursed. For me it's the flat spot ; ) I found something yesterday that suggests it's my stride. Instead of already having my foot moving backwards when it strikes the ground, it's hitting flat. The forward motion is putting the shear force on the landing spot. Yeah, that sounds probable. I tend to stomp and it gets worse when I tire.

So I'm, what, seven weeks out from my first marathon and I probably run all wrong. If these things start at mile 15 I don't know if I can finish. I use a run/walk of 3/1 and my training runs are 11:15-11:45 pace. I hope to hold 13:00 for the marathon. Having only two really longs runs left (MfM), testing opportunities are limited.

Should I try to change my strike? Keep things the same and hope for the best? I've gone as far as putting duct tape across the balls of my feet and it does seem to help the foot slide on the sock.

Thanks for any insight,
Ronda
