OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Sorry to hear you had such a tough time. If you can get a hold of this month's (August) Runner's World make sure to read the article that starts on page 61, "The Heat is On". It is really interesting and has nice little guide to adjusting your workouts according to both heat and humidity levels. I have been using this guide since the magazine hit my mailbox at just about the same time my area went into an extended heatwave.

I have been able to get through all of my runs albeit either slower or inside following the guidelines listed.

Hope you have been able to take it easy today and stay cool!

Thank you for the great tip! I will check out that article today.

Sorry your run did not go well, but glad you knew well enough to stop. The same thing happened to me on my 10 miler. I was just shy of two miles to get back to my car when I suddenly got cold-the first sign of heat exhaustion which can lead to heat stroke. So I too had to walk the rest. For my 12 miler, I knew better and started at 6am.

Yes, sleeping in was definitely not worth it. I'll not make that mistake again. If I do sleep in, it will likely be treadmill city for me!

Thre is NOTHING worse than walking back after running somewhere, when I hurt my calf muscle a few months ago I was nearly 3 miles away from work, I had to walk/limp back,it was the pits soaking with sweat and pouring with rain,it was cold and pretty miserable, well you live and learn, hope your ok after you got home and hydrated and rested:upsidedow

Oh wow, that sounds awful to have to walk back with an injury in the rain! You poor thing! By the time I got home in the air conditioning, drank my liquids, and rested for a while, I was fine, so no harm done.

So I found out today that they post those excessive heat advisories for a reason! DH and I stayed up too late last night and couldn't face trying to get our run in before church, so we decided we'd just go afterward. That's when somebody should have slapped me! I didn't realize it was quite as hot and humid as it was. I made it through the first mile well, the second mile OK, and felt pretty lousy for the third.

At the end of three miles, all of a sudden I got COLD, with goosebumps on my arms and legs, and feeling like my legs would go out from under me. I didn't want to be an idiot, so I did stop and go under a tree for a bit, and then started the long two-mile walk of shame back to the car. This is the first time on that route that I never passed another runner. Or even another walker! DH and I were clearly the only idiots today!

Glad to hear that you recognized the signs and are ok. I see it all the time with people not recognizing the signs or not having plenty of fluids with them for hydration. I don't mean those out running, just the people spending time outside "relaxing".

When I decided to run the half was when the temps were just getting to the highest they have been all summer here. Hence, my decision to use the treadmill for the first bit then once the temps drop a little start outside. Which will be soon.

Glad you're okay! I've done that before as well and have learned a lesson. I hydrate frequently and on really hot days (like the past week or so) I've been instituting walking breaks.

I ran the Princess, but we splurged and stayed at POLY so DH and the kids monorailed it to MK and EPCOT to get some more sleep over the buses.

Between cutting costs and the need to fly home on Marathon day, monorail resorts are likely out.

So, if DH and the kids were to just come to the end of the race and we were staying at ASMovies or POFQ would there be a bus to take them to the Epcot bus station area during the race?

I don't know what time buses start running again after they take a break for the start of the race, but I do know they run during the race. I would make sure they allow plenty of time to get from the hotel to the finish line, but they can definitely sleep in and catch a bus to the finish.

Hell, its always raining in scotland though, so funny, I turned up the central heating at work(this was june by the way) and had a nice shower and some tea! opposites. I was fine too, so its all good.

It was 108* here yesterday. Not some hysterical weatherman, heat index 108, but the real, miserable, deadly 108. I continue training in vampire mode and finished before the sun came up. It's supposed to break a bit over the next few days. I'm slowly adding a fourth day of running. I'm on plan. Checking off the days feels good.

Hope everyone is training safely!

Ronda

I've read for past races, and probably this one too, that runners must catch their bus/monorail by 4 AM be in their corrals by 5 AM. But some of the discussion on these boards suggest that Disney is not that strict with those times.

Even when I was at the Princess Half, I think runners were coming and going from their corrals almost until race start.

So how much does Disney tolerate? What is the TRUE story? :confused3

Thanks.

I'm so done with this heat! I'm beginning to seriously regret signing up for a full in August in KC. I don't know why I didn't think about this heat when I signed up in the spring! I guess I'll take it all now if it'll break by the end of the month!

I'm no expert since I've only done a few Disney races, and the Princess was my first experience with the starting line corrals. That being said, there didn't seem to be anyone turning runners away that were jumping in the corrals at the last minute. I'm sure Disney tries to start sending people towards the corrals who are still in the bag area at a certain point, but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone being told they couldn't run because they weren't in the corral area at 5:00 or later.

The true story is that Disney isn't going to have any sympathy for you if you show up for the bus at 430 and end up being late for your start. ;)

That said, I highly doubt they'll turn you away from your corral if you show up 10 minutes before the start. The thing to ask yourself is why do you want to cut it close? Why not get to the starting area with plenty of time to hit the porta-potty, relax a little, and gather your thoughts before the race? I think that's a better option than trying to time it so you arrive 30 seconds before the gun feeling rushed.

At this January's 1/2 marathon on Saturday people were still coming into the corrals shortly before start. I do believe it was a result of bus issues.

Hello everyone!
I have a question for the experts out there (that would be everyone but me!):

It's my daughter's 2nd birthday this Sunday and I had planned on running a
10k. Problem is, I fell ill last week so I haven't been training since my 12 mile run. I am finally feeling better and I would really like to run with my daughter but I would like your opinions on that since I also have a half-marathon planned for September 18th so I don't want to risk anything by running a 10k if I haven't been running enough mileage in the last 2 weeks.

If you think I could do it, how many miles should I run tomorrow and Friday to prepare myself for Sunday?

It will also be the 1st time I run with a jogging stroller and my daughter, so any advice for that too is appreciated. I don't plan on breaking any records because my pace isn't that great to start (approx:12 minute/mile).

Thanks!!!:yay:

I've been reading these boards for years, but finally decided to take the plunge, register, and post. I've visited the parks more times that I can count (my sister is a cast member), but this will be the first time for the marathon. I'm running a 10k in 3 days and a half in six weeks, as part of my prep. Coming from Colorado, I'll be hoping for cool temperatures in January.

I have a question about resorts. My wife and 2 kids (6 and 3 years old) will be coming with me and encouraging me to the finish. It looks like BLT is down to just studios for our travel dates, so I'm looking at VWL. Do the boats to the Magic Kingdom start running early enough for spectators to catch someone on a 9-10 min/mile pace? If not, would buses be the only option?

Does anyone think that BWV would be a better option, or about the same?

I'd appreciate any feedback, thanks

We stayed at BWV a couple years ago, and you can walk right out of your room and watch runners near the end of the marathon. If you don't care where your family sees you along the course than that would certainly be the easiest. It would also give the kids a chance to sleep in a little. If they want to see you run down main-street then they can catch a bus from the BWV to the start of the race and take the monorail to MK. I have no idea about the boats from VWL running that early. Depending on what corral you are in, you would take about 1:30 hours from the start to get to MK. They would need to get to MK early to get a spot on main-street because those spots are a premium to find after the race starts.

I have stayed at BWV for all 6 Goofy's. I had my DW come with me on the bus to the start and than take the Monorail to MK. It is a great place to see your family and for them to see you. Well worth getting up early.

If they than thought to make AK, they proabaly won't as DW took 1 1/2 hrs from MK to AK via bus. Lucky I am not fast ;)

Watching from the BW is easy out the back door near mile 24. They could always go into DHS or Epcot if they didn't want to see you cross the finish line. That is problem with all of these locations.

See you in Jan!
