OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Coach, thank you for the information on the food stops. It seems like I will be okay with my plan. Maybe I'll carry a bottle of water just in case... I'll think about that. Depends on the temperature that day too.

I made a mistake by not eating enough the night before or the morning of the Princess Half. At the starting line my stomach was grumbling. All I had on me was a 3/4 full bag of sport beans. So it was the Powerade and a Clif Shot along the course that got me through. Somewhere around mile 8 a volunteer was passing out Twizzlers. Let me tell you, a Twizzler never tasted so good!

orlandothebeagle - thank you. I feel much better now that I'm able to put in some longer runs. I did 14 miles almost two weeks ago, and this weekend I've got 16 on my plan. It is so hot and humid here though, it is not a lot of fun running! But, it might be better than the cold I'll face in December! I'd like to get in one 20 mile run while the weather is still warm, then scale back a little, then begin ramping up the miles again this fall. That's the plan anyway! :)

Thank you for the information, Coach!

I was actually thinking about having everyone go to the TTC and then, as you mentioned walking to the Poly for mile 13. So would there be viewing at the TTC? The map looks like runners would pass by around mile 8.5 maybe?

Is there any viewing area outside of the Studios if the spectators are not going into the park?

Also, it is pretty easy for a spectator to find where the viewing areas are?

We pass through the TTC just east of the monorail station and then head out to the old 1980s bus stops.

Yes, as one walks up to the from of DHS there are spots. Though it's not a great place to watch if you want to see the runner finish. Transport times are just too tight.

Finally, yes, the course is well marked. You can use the map I posted a couple times recently for an idea of exactly where the course runs.

Just for the record, I carry a bottle of powerade or water to the start and through the first few miles. It's usually gone by mile 10 or 11. In the 07 oven race the bottle made it all the way through mile 17 or 18 before I trashed.

Its difficult to run in humidity, but can I say , I done 10 miles in the pi**ing rain on wed and it wasnt fun, it was pretty miserable actually, my hands were frozen by the time I made it back and I think I had gained around 5 kgs in weight what with all the rain! I was getting splashed by all the cars going past, Its raining men came on my ipod and that made me smile but that was the only smile!!! keep up the good work,

I'm wondering if it's too late to start training for the half marathon. First, let me say that I used to run a lot but I haven't run in years. I'd be starting from scratch and I need to drop some weight along the way. I don't have any delusions of being competitive - I'd just like to try and finish. I live out in the country and have long stretches of roadway to run on along with a high school track just down the road. This is one of those bucket list items that I'd really like to do as a personal accomplishment.

I did just have a complete physical and all is fine with that other than needing to lose some weight. Just looking for some good honest advice and guidance. Thanks.

It's not too late at all. You've got plenty of time to start a training program geared towards beginning runners that will slowly but surely get you to the race. I'd suggest visiting your local specialty running store to see if they know of any training groups in the area you can run with. Having people to train with often makes it easier to stick with a program, especially for first-time runners.

Hi .....
All most folks want to do is finish:thumbsup2
Its definatly not too late, first thing first ...ENTER< then no going back, lots of training plans on the net for begginers, but my only advice( I learnt the sore and lengthy way) go to a running shop and get some advice and decent trainers.

:thumbsup2 for wanting to get back into running. Your are one big step up on me in that because I have knee problems I can't run yet at age 59 I decided to take on Disney's 2011 Dopey and the 5K. I trained wisely and completed all 3 events without issue.

Get yourself to a good running store for shoes and helpful information, read up on training methods in various books, continue to post here with any questions, stay healthy and remember, HAVE FUN!

I am in for the half:goodvibes

A little background: I HATE RUNNING. Toss me ih the water and I will be happy all day long.

When we did the Alaskan cruise in May we had a wonderful time with our table mates. Since the cruise we have remained in contact. They kept asking us to go to WDW with them and cheer as one of them ran the half. We kept putting it off due to travel plans for the rest of 2012 and didn't think we could pull a WDW trip in January off. Well a co-worker has run the half a couple of times now and we kept talking about how fun WDW is and he kept saying he loved the run around the parks. Well, within a just a few months he went from having stage 1 cancer to stage 4. So, we decided to join our new friends in January, but not as a cheer squad. I decided to run the half for my co-worker.

As for "I HATE RUNNING" I do, but the goal is there and I will do it.

By the way, :wave2: to Lynne and Len

Jon - good for you. And it will be good for you. I think it was in Runner's World that someone said, when thinking about those fighting for their lives, "it's Tuesday, I get to run today!"

Keep us posted on your training.

:dance3::dance3::dance3: he got a big smile for that comment.

Thanks Ronda.

Usually, when someone ask how things are I give them "I am still breathing and paying taxes, so all is good"

I am a little fortunate in that as part of my job I am given 2 hours as part of my shift to workout. So, I have a good start just have to work on the endurance for the long distance. I prefer cycling or rowing, usually every couple of weeks I'll bike to the office, 37km. I have been spending time on the treadmill lately. On the treadmill I am running an average of a 9:00 to 9:30 /mile for 6 miles. Without feeling gased. Just have to start getting outside and running to get the real times and paces.

Thanks Lynne. We are doing good, busy but good. Work has been almost non-stop once we hit the summer season. The sad part is that when I am busy it's not a good day for someone else. We wished we could have done the WBTA again this year but just couldn't take the time of season off two years in a row. It was a wonderful trip last year.

A friend and I are doing the 1/2!

DS is running the Mickey Mile and DH (or the whole family) will do the 5K with DD in a stroller.

Now just booking all the details and getting back into running. I ran the Princess 1/2 in 2010, but not much more than that since... have a 10K in Sept though!

:goodvibes

So I found out today that they post those excessive heat advisories for a reason! DH and I stayed up too late last night and couldn't face trying to get our run in before church, so we decided we'd just go afterward. That's when somebody should have slapped me! I didn't realize it was quite as hot and humid as it was. I made it through the first mile well, the second mile OK, and felt pretty lousy for the third.

At the end of three miles, all of a sudden I got COLD, with goosebumps on my arms and legs, and feeling like my legs would go out from under me. I didn't want to be an idiot, so I did stop and go under a tree for a bit, and then started the long two-mile walk of shame back to the car. This is the first time on that route that I never passed another runner. Or even another walker! DH and I were clearly the only idiots today!

Sorry to hear you had such a tough time. If you can get a hold of this month's (August) Runner's World make sure to read the article that starts on page 61, "The Heat is On". It is really interesting and has nice little guide to adjusting your workouts according to both heat and humidity levels. I have been using this guide since the magazine hit my mailbox at just about the same time my area went into an extended heatwave.

I have been able to get through all of my runs albeit either slower or inside following the guidelines listed.

Hope you have been able to take it easy today and stay cool!

Sorry your run did not go well, but glad you knew well enough to stop. The same thing happened to me on my 10 miler. I was just shy of two miles to get back to my car when I suddenly got cold-the first sign of heat exhaustion which can lead to heat stroke. So I too had to walk the rest. For my 12 miler, I knew better and started at 6am.

I have used a heart rate monitor during cycling long before becoming a walker. Knowing your HR for a given effort in current weather and terrain conditions can give a heads up of impending danger before one physically feels it. In these hot and humid days I follow my HR very carefully.

Thre is NOTHING worse than walking back after running somewhere, when I hurt my calf muscle a few months ago I was nearly 3 miles away from work, I had to walk/limp back,it was the pits soaking with sweat and pouring with rain,it was cold and pretty miserable, well you live and learn, hope your ok after you got home and hydrated and rested:upsidedow
