OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Hi,

I wanted to introduce myself. My name is Krista and I will be running the half marathon this January. This will be my first time! I'll be staying at Boardwalk during this trip. My family will be at home so I'll be doing this by myself. :sad1: Any other solo runners out there? :)

Hi! I'm jumping in to introduce myself. I ran the full last year and had such a great time, that I signed up again. I can't wait! I'm running the best I've ever run right now and I hope I'll continue to improve and cut a LOT off my time from this past Jan.

Hi Paige! Glad to know you. We're almost neighbors.
Cheers,

Hi Krista! Yay for you for signing up. Boardwalk will be such a nice location for you. I'm doing the half and my husband is doing Goofy. Good luck with your training, and welcome!

Hi Krista,
My sister and I are doing the half. We're at BLT this year, but previous years have all been at Boardwalk. I second the comment "great location." Good luck.

Hi Krista! I'm Sarah and I'm running the Goofy this January for the first time. I'm 90% sure I'll be on my own for the weekend (I'll be back with the whole family in June for a week so I couldn't really justify taking my son out of school for this). It'll be my first solo trip to Disney!

Hi Krista!

Welcome Krista and GaPaige! As a fellow newbie to WISH, I think you will find this a great group of people!

Krista, I will be running my first Half on January as well! I am really excited and a but nervous! So you will be running with friends!

I'll be running by myself too. It will be my first half.

Another solo runner for the half here. I am getting super excited for it with my training ramping up. I'm also training for a half that is local this fall.

I have a couple questions...

I am trying to work on speed. I've started off pretty slow and am now trying to work my way up to a faster pace. How do I so this? This week I ran at my normal pace and every two minutes increased my speed for 1 minute. It was something to try without having done much research on it yet.

Also, I am running the half and my husband is going to be running the full. We will have two 3 year olds in tow. I'm looking for suggestions on a celebratory dinner for Sunday night after the full. I was thinking maybe the backyard barbeque or hoop de doo revue, because it would be entertainment for the kids as well as dinner, but not sure. Thoughts?

Thanks, Bonnie

So I just wanted to share a little happy news - I started training for the 1/2 on May 1, and since that time, I've lost about 32 pounds! I run 3 miles a day M-F and have signed up for a 5K in mid sept. Then I start prepping for a 15K which is in early November. Then I will continue with the training for the 1/2! I'm very excited - just so you know, my goal is not necessarily to run the whole 1/2, although I will try, but just to complete it.

A question, are there any hills I should be especially concerned about?

GREAT JOB - 2-3 pounds a week is a sustainable rate.

For the half no hills to speak of. There are a few slopes attached to over/underpasses but nothing bad. On half, just after mile 1 you hit an overpass. It's dark and you may not even recognize it. Then as you approach the TTC on the tram road you cross under Floridian Way (mile 4). About a 15 foot drop and up on less than a 3% grade. A steeper down and up is 0.8 miles later as you pass under Seven Seas Lagoon Water Bridge. I estimate the average grade for the underpass at about 4-6% with a short section (maybe 250 feet) at maybe 6-8%. As you pass the railway going into MK, again a short little underpass that you would not recognize in a car and then a steady climb in the parking lot onto Main Street... about 15 feet elevation gain over a 500 foot run (2-3% ish). One other MK 'hill' is the down as you leave the MK and go back stage. Then the set of three overpasses from mile 10 through 12. I hear a lot of folks talk about them but its a gentle slope up at 3-4 % incline. The real issue is the first climb at mile 10 as you also do a 270 degree right hand clover leaf exit from World to Epcot. It's designed for 30-45 mph so the banking is significant. Take the long way around the bend where the ground is a little flatter and slopes gentler. The second hill of the three is just after the first.. The last one is just fun. It comes as part of a 170 degree uturn. I always take it wide to avoid the crowd and to flatten out some of the slope.

Hope this helps

Oh my goodness - that more than helps - that's a GREAT synopsis - thank you so much! I could actually visualize it in my mind!:worship:

Thanks all for the welcome and the words of encouragement! I am relieved to see I'm not the only one who will be running solo!

I've been running for a little over a year, with breaks here and there. I've run a few 5K races which were really a lot of fun. The furthest that I've run at one time is six miles, so I have a ways to go to get to 13.1!!

I look forward to getting to know all of you! Hopefully there will be a meet or two scheduled.

Thanks again! :)

Krista

Wow, that's really impressive! Are you watching your eating as well, or is it all from the increased exercise?

Quick, but very important question :) - how does the sizing of the shirts run? I ordered a medium, but now I'm wondering if it will fit. I usually wear a women's medium. I guess I'd rather have it too big rather than too small though. Any experience with shirt sizing?

Thanks!!

A women's medium would almost definitely be a men's small. I wear a women's large most of the time because I hate tight clothing, and unisex smalls fit me fine.

In 2010 I got a size small and it was a big, but ok. This year I got a small again and it was HUGE!!! I can't remember if they're the same brand, but wow, what a difference!?! (I guess I should add that MY size did not change from 2010 to 2011. Lol)

This time I ordered a small for the half and an extra small for the marathon relay. We'll see!

There is a link that shows measurements for sizing at the area where you pick your size. It has sleeve length, chest size etc.
