OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

I know my chiropractor recommended glucosamine for me to help ward-off further knee issues. In addition to my PT of course. Coach, thanks for the 1 month info - I should get started on it soon then since hill training will be starting soon with running club and I plan to do that to a) train for hills and b) help with my speed a little.

I haven't run a full marathon yet, so the point of running a couple in the fall is to get a some runs that distance under my belt before Goofy. I personally don't want to run a full marathon for the first time as part of Goofy. I've read about people who have been able to finish without running one previously, but I'd rather know what it's like before I subject my body to the Goofiness of 39.3 miles in 2 days.

I ran the Goofy Challenge as my first marathon this year. I understand your wariness and hesitation in doing so, but let me assure you, I finished with no problem. I had only run up to 21 miles in a long run, but still managed to do very well. I would also urge caution in doing a few marathons before Goofy, only because your risk of injury will be greatly increased.

The Fuel question wasn't really about fueling. I'm planning to start doing a run/walk method again with my marathon training, will that help reduce possible injury since I'll be increasing my mileage?

Thanks for the info about the supplements. I think I'll seriously look into trying it out. My problem with knee injuries has to do with the amount of hills around here that I end up training on. I know they are great for me to gain muscle and speed, but sometimes they make my knees ache!

I think I would back off one of the fulls and run it as a half. Progressing from a half to a full to a Goofy is not much different that an ironman progression in a training season. I understand the need for having one under your belt before Goofy... I used to say no way to folks running their first marathon as Goofy but have since revised that thought pattern a bit.

I really think that running injury free is more about creating a strong set of legs, a great core to push from and running from the glutes as much as the run/walk technique. Having a weakness in any of these areas necessitates destressing and that is where the run/walk comes in.

So ---

Strong legs. Squats, lunges, deadlifts, Oh my!. I work out legs through training. I have moved to full body weight activities more than the club machines to achieve the results. I add hill work (long hour long hills on a treadmill) and 60-90 minute sessions on a spinning bike with lots of resistance.

Core - it's mot your daddy's situps. Have not done one in 4 years. Its all about unstable workouts. Think single leg squats, then do them with the round side of a Bosu ball facing down. Think things like rotator cuff pulls using a band, but supported on one leg. Lots of really cool work on unstable surfaces. I do lots of work on a TRX system. I have owned for over a year and really think they are under rated.

Running from the butt - buns of steel. Cycling out of the saddle, the legs workout from above and hill running all work on the hammies and glutes. These also tend to work on the VMO or inner quad. Strengthening the inner quad is crucial in avoiding runners knee. Running from the glutes is also critical. Many newer runners essentially run falling from step to step. Look at the latest two runDisney print ads. If I can see the sole of your show as you approach me, you are falling not running. This is a sign of a heal striker... and in the case of the print ads a real hear braker. You should hit the ground with your front foot as it is already moving back. It should strike under your center of gravity, not in front. To facilitate this, you must be pulling back as you strike. So a couple great cues are mid foot striking and running from the butt. You will feel your outer foot make contact and the foot collapse inward as a mid foot striker. Likewise, think engaging the butt as you pull back and you will start to land more under your center of gravity.

I ind that running a long hill is a great place to feel these things.

Sorry went long and need to head out the door.

Oh, I am a big fan of run/walk training by the way. I use it personally and run 90% of my longer races using the technique

COOL!!!!! I'm psyched!!

My parents want to come to watch me while I'm running the full in January. It'll be the weekend of my dad's 70th birthday! He said we'll probably turn it into one big celebration and will likely stay at either the Poly or the Yacht and Beach Club depending on what kind of rates my sister can get when they open up for CM bookings at the 6 month mark. (She was advising him the better options and we narrowed it to those since the Poly is on the monorail line and would make getting around a lot easier or he and Mom can sleep in and then come out and watch me towards the end if we're at the Yacht and Beach Club.) My fingers are crossed for the Poly since I've always wanted to stay there!

Coach - just wanted to say thank you for all that great information. I've struggled with runner's knee since I started and these are some great tips to strengthen my body. Thank you so much!

Coach--how do you feel about weight lifting classes, like BodyPump? Do they help build the strong legs and core or is there too much fluff. I'm managing a case of tendonitis, and I was trying the classes to try to toughen myself up!

That's cool. As a runner you will like the Poly, also. Sleeping in just a bit on race morning is nice.

It's not a bad class, but it may not be the better choice as it is an entire body weight class if you are looking to core and legs. Though I would not describe the class as too much fluff. I have come out of a non-branded version of bodypump totally shot so it is what you put into it that counts. The largest issue I see with the class is that a great instructor in a good time slot will fill the class and if you are not early enough you will either be working too light or too heavy. If yo are looking for a quick entire body strength session this is a good class.

Summarizing and not trying to contradict myself, it's a good overall fitness class that uses weights to tone as much as strengthen. You would not need to worry about adding weight lifter's mass. If I were looking to improve my running, I would look for a class like their (Les Mills) branded CX30 class. We have a similar class in my club. The emphasis is core and functional fitness as much as strength. You may find this disguised as Sports Palates in many clubs, also.

Thanks for the advice Coach! I think I'll stick with the BodyPump for now (the other class isn't offered at my gym). I do hope to see some all over toning benefits.

Good luck, it sounds like a great weekend, it is great to have some support at the finish line, for years my hubby runs faster than me and cheers me in, last year I done the half ,he done the full, I made up for it and cheered him in like mad, :rolleyes1 not sure he liked it......

So after this year I am officially hooked and have signed up today for the half again. I've convinced my friend to do the relay with me too (got her at a weak moment that involved vodka :rotfl2:) so gonna sign up for that tomorrow.

DD is in the 100m dash again - too cute :)

And, I think DH is gonna go Goofy but he's waiting to see if friends of ours go so they can look after our DD - he's even crazier than I thought

Fly out on 3 Jan :yay: :yay: :yay:

Yep! My sis has been on-course cheerer for my running partner and me at Disney races (and others in Central Florida for him since I don't live there). She's one that's at as many places as she can get, regardless of the crazy start times. My dad seemed less than thrilled at the early start hour - hence thinking about the Poly or the Yacht and Beach. We'll see!!

Although I am currently rehabbing a cuboid stress fracture my sister in law and I have registered for the half marathon again! Our families are doing the 5k, and her husband will be "Dopey" for the weekend! I am hoping to convince one of my sibs to do the relay with me! Although I have 9 months to train I don't think i'm ready to go goofy but am really interested in the relay. I hope to return to running April 1!
Best of luck to everyone training!
We are all super excited as we booked our stay at the Grand Floridian...it will be our first stay in a deluxe resort :)

I went to run a short power run, but only made 2.5 miles cause of discomfort in my foot. It is on the top, going to rest a week or two now. I could feel my stride was different and quit cause it didnt feel right on my leg. Will continue with other less forceful activities during healing. I am trying to get ready for not only goofy, but the ING Miami full marathon later that month, decided on full cause its the tenth anniversary

You know your dad can still get to the Ply in time from the Yacht and Beach and then go back, relax and be out there for you there....

Make sure to allow time to heal. It is all so tempting to come back a couple weeks early. I know you will.

I laughed when I read your post because it is so true! It has been very hard, I will have been out of running for 7 weeks when the first week of April rolls around. I walked around in a boot for a little over 3 weeks. For the past two I have been working out "bootless" on the elliptical 4-5 times a week with little to no pain. The last time I went to the doctor, I emailed my husband all of the little details associated with my return to running, so he can provide additional accountability. I have a strict plan, which keeps me running only 2 miles at a time for the first couple weeks, but first I have to be pain free for 2 weeks. Each time I wince or complain about my foot, DH starts my 2 weeks over! He also says that if I am gone for 40 minutes he'll know I have done more than 2 miles and I will be in trouble ;)

The logical side of me knows if I push too soon I will cause worse problems, but the "runner" in me wants to take advantage of the arrival of spring. Running on the elliptical with the window open is just not the same!

Just done our entry for the relay (did my half entry yesterday!) :woohoo: :woohoo:

Is it a Chip & Dale medal, it's all very exciting :)
