OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Do you guys think I'll be okay having my longest run earlier this month at 22 miles? I was going to try and push it to 23 this weekend but I've been really stiff in the legs and extra tired before my morning run, I'm thinking 20 is probably best.

It's my first marathon and I'd like to be prepared but I did read coach saying it'd be better to be underprepared tan overprepared. I'm thinking this is one of those situations.

Run what you think you can do. Though do not feel yourself short, either. Head out the door with a couple goals in mind. One being the longest you think you can go then a fall back plan. If you were to range your run goal like 20-23, you will feel successful once you hit the range.

Someone told me runners get in MK free the Monday after the marathon. Is that true?

I was wondering if that would be a one-shot deal when they offered it last year. I actually figured it would impact the bottom line enough for Disney that they would offer it again. Think of all the people that would stay an extra night in a WDW resort, buy a few more meals, spend more in the stores, etc.
I have APs this year so I'll be at the parks Monday anyways, but it was definitely a nice perk last year when we didn't have the passes.

We are there, also. Last year it was a great little perk, though it did not add anything to WDW's bottom line for our group. We were staying until Tuesday even before the perk was announced. In fact it cost them a day as I did not purchase a pass for that day.

THis year we purchased AP in April so we are on them this year...

Anyone wearing compression socks on the flight home Monday?

Was just thinking that might not be a bad idea. Now I have to try and get some. Maybe I can ask Santa.
:santa:

Will wear them after the half on saturday and full sunday, then again on the flight home monday night, most likely.

Ugh I'm in a bad spot...I know I can finish my leg of the marathon relay, but I seem to have put on a good 8-9 lbs in the past month...blame Thanksgiving, a Disney cruise, and Christmas parties for that!I ran 13:1 on Friday but took about 6 minutes longer and I'm pretty sure due to the extra pounds. I know what I have to do (cut sugar, coke especially!) And I'm pretty sure it will come right off...just wanted to whine a little and hear someone tell me I can get those extra pounds off before january 8th!
I undertand how you feel. I've put on about 8 pounds since a half marathon that I ran right before Thanksgiving. Incredible how you notice the difference and how it affects so many things in your life! You can lose those pounds for sure in 3 weeks! Drink at least 2 liters of water/day (you should because of your running anyways), eat lots of veggies and low carb fruits (berries), low fat yogourts, lean protein and good carbs (brown rice, whole wheat pastas) in small portions. Stay away from sugar! I am not a doctor but have followed this nutrition plan by a nutritionist in the past and it's just common sense. Good luck! See you there...

Quick update and a woo hoo

As you may have read in my Hi post a couple months back, life and other issues left me well short of anything I would call trained. In fact, I was actually worried about not maintaining my perfectly status.

Saturday, I completed what has generally been the longest distance of a typical marathon season. I did it and am seemingly uninjured as a result. Now I have a unique issue of having an extra week to deal with. I messed up a couple weekend runs, coming up short after having an equipment issue and one where it just did not feel right. So, my thoughts today are to run a shorter run next weekend then go long again Christmas weekend. It’s not the ideal taper period, but I have to consider this a training event rather than an ‘A’ event.

This week is my last full week in the office prior to Goofy. Actually, that’s not exactly correct, either. I am out on Friday, also. I will be on the bike most mornings during the break. We have a nice little single-track mountain bike trail about 15 minutes from the house. So next week is all about playing and then a long run on Christmas Eve.

New Years weekend will bring on the traditional “oops I can’t believe I just killed the legs a week before Goofy” workout. I would actually feel lost without pushing to the max capacity that Friday....

Sounds like most folks are having a great last run and those who are nursing injuries, well, hang in there. It is so much better to just taper a week or two longer that scheduled. Remember, better to enter race day slightly under trained and well than well trained and injured
Great job Coach!
Happy for you that your past injury isn't stopping you :)
Goofy, here we come .. woohoo!

A "Grinch" stole my Wine & Dine 2011 1/2 marathon magnet along with the Gotta Run one my husband gave me while training for that, my 1st half, off my car yesterday while visiting MK. My husband had just gone out of his way to connect a lost camera to its person and then we returned to my car..

Looking forward to running the Donald. My husband said he'll buy me a decal next time.

That stinks. But now you can get a new one to celebrate a new achievement. (And keep it inside or attached to the car!)

Joan Congrats on 24. Sometimes they aren't pretty (just like the race itself) but you got it done.

randomiam79 Hope the weight comes off--just don't do anything dietetically dramatic before the race. I sorta know how you feel, though. I had an injury-induced layoff of many months and put a few on myself. My problem is.....I can't give up my chocolate! So I try to watch the rest of what I eat, try not to neurose and rarely get on a scale.

And on a totally unrelated note......Looks like I will be volunteering at the half in my chosen spot. I hadn't gotten any confirmation, so I emailed the volunteer people and they said they're sending something out soon, but did list my Water Stop #6. So when you run by the back of Splash Mtn, I'll be there cheering people on.

Hurray:cheer2: thank-you!

I've been using these from sports authority; I'm on the edge of shin splints:
McDavid Calf Support- Reversible
Item Number: 3433256

I used to get forearm splints, in high school, from pommel horse. How's that for obscure?

Thanks Maura for voluntearing... Without the volunteers this and most other races just would not happen. Though, isn't it ironic Splash Mountain - Water Stop? Hmmmm

So I seemed to have caught the flu...and now I am so behind in my training! This same thing happened last year and I was out 2-3 weeks RIGHT before the big race! Any tips on what I can do to help keep up with training that wont make me sicker than I already am? I can't believe it has happened again :( so much for a PR this year!:sad1: any ideas would really help, thanks!

Happy Holidays everyone, the big day is almost here! yay!!

Sorry to hear this...

Spend you energy getting well. Get to a doctor if you have a fever or do not get better quickly. I am not a big believer in OTC remedies so I am of little help there. Hydrate.

Other than that, consider this a long taper.

Anyone know about how long it should take for relay runner #1 to get from exchange point to Animal Kingdom? Assume runner #1 finishes around 8:30/9am...

Trying to figure out if runner 1 would be able to make it to Everest by 9:30-9:40

Certainly unreachable within the time frame if Runner 1 finishes at 9 AM. Possibly reachable if and only if all stars line up for the 8:30 time... Remember that Runner 1 is leaving a heavily congested area due to the race and headed to a heavily congested area due to the race.

Though, I am a little confused why Runner 1 has a 30 minute window while your target is only 10 minutes.

[ADDED] There is also the need to get through the finish line area and the fact that the finish line is in the middle of a parking lot, a little over a quarter mile from any permanent transportation stop.

Ditto on hydration. Get lots of rest and sleep. Avoid alcohol and otc meds with it. No training for a few days.

Hot lemonade with honey. Chicken soup. Airbourne. Saltwater gargle. ZMA at night. Don't overdo the OTC stuff, this is all in moderation.
(I know that airbourne is involved in a false advertising suit. It doesn't mean that it doesn't work, it means that they don't have proof that it works.)

This is my biggest taper neurosis. It's the dreaded low white-blood-cell count in endurance athletes. If someone sounds sick in the checkout, l leave the line and run home and neti pot.

Did you get a flu shot this year? Do we have a new flu strain not covered by this years vaccine?

Before I hop on the phone, I figured I would try posting here. I know the entry fee is non-refundable, but does anyone know if you can cancel and apply it to next year's race? Or if that isn't possible, is there any way to donate an entry?

The backstory is, last night during my last volleyball game of the year, I came down hard on top of someone's foot and rolled my ankle. Xray this morning shows a small fracture where the ligament attaches to the bone in my ankle. My doctor is the physician for the athletic teams at the university in town, so he's going to try to get me back for the full. His exact term, however, was a "slim chance". He said if I was playing football or basketball, he could tape me up to play, but 26 miles is a whole different type of "play". We'll know for sure next week.

I'd really like to do something useful with my entry if I can't use it.

Thanks Coach.

Runner 1 is just coming back from being in a walking cast for 8 weeks due to a stress fracture. At this point we're not sure how it will impact her time/speed. She normally runs a sub 2hr half, but with only 3 weeks to go....

Runner 2 will just be battling potential leg fatigue from the Donald half.

It's worth a call but I am afraid the deferral period has passed. Call for sure.

Absent that, the Achilles Project, a group supporting wounded veterans brings several veterans in for the weekend. You may want to see if you can link that up; though the attorneys may get involved with a transfer.

Great advice! Thanks! That's going to be my plan for this weekend.
