OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Hi Guys, I am joining your party! I registered for the 1/2 awhile ago but I am really getting excited my 1st rundisney race. And went searching for your thread. I have a lot of reading to do. You guys are amazing with your knowledge to us newbies...

My first question (hope I am not repeating something that has been discussed) but is there a resort that is better to stay at than others? Are the buses and monorail really quick getting us to the staging area at all resorts? We haven't booked rooms yet.

In general, select the room that best fits what you need budget wise and amenity wise . Buses run from all resorts to both the expo and race. As with any system that needs to carry 20k+ folks in a 90 minute window, snafus can and do occur. I think the SSR resort was the latest to suffer. Mears, the transportation contractor, does an admirable job policing and looking for issues. Knock on wood, the monorail has not had a pre-race issue since I have been attending (or at least one that I am aware of). They did have a couple post race issues over the last couple years.

From a personal opinion basis, if you are looking economy, Pop works well since there is only one resort on all buses as opposed to the 3 for the all star. If you are looking monorail, think Poly. You can take one of the trains out of the equation by walking to the TTC. Otherwise, your choice.

I received this message when I sent in a time today from this weekend. Looks like they are still taking times.

We have received your email regarding one or more of the RunDisney Events. Due to the high volume we are experiencing at this time, please allow us extra time to respond to your request. Look for a reply within the next five business days. Thank you for your continued support of the RunDisney events!

I sent my 10K result in on Saturday night and got the same automated reply. Just checked my email this afternoon and they have made the change already. Got moved to a 2:15 finish time. :goodvibes

Help! We just moved and I managed to misplace my training schedule. I had changed one I found online way back in march to fit my fall races, and I don't even remember what schedule that was. I've been a bump on a long the last couple weeks trying to bounce back from the RNR St. Louis marathon, but I really need to get back at it this week. I have a half that I'm running Saturday as a training run, so hopefully that will be a good jumping off point to finish my training. What should my weekend long runs looks like from now until marathon weekend? My goal is to finish Dopey, no personal records wanted for these races.:)

I am pretty much following the Galloway plan, with an addition of the R&R half marathon in Las Vegas. I am looking at 6, 10/23, 6, half, 7, 12/26, 6, 7.

I rocked my training this weekend! We went to a "People of Wal-mart" party on Saturday night, so I moved my runs to Friday/Saturday. I did 8.5 miles on the treadmill on Friday before work and hit a 15min/mile pace pretty well. Saturday was 20 miles, and I was really nervous. It turned out beautiful, and I finished easily with a 13:28 pace. My shin splints didn't bother me at all (I've been rolling them with cans of frozen OJ). There was just one problem. Around mile 6, my lower calf/achilles started hurting. I ran/hobbled through it, and it got a little better around mile 14. I'm practicing my RICE now.

And, I am in full-blown Disney trip planning mode! Flights and hotels are booked and now it's time to figure out exactly how to balance my needs for rest vs. park time!

When/how do you find out what corral you will be placed in? I entered on my full marathon application my time from my last Disney Half. Do I find out my corral placement when I pick up my race packet or is this available prior to January 5th?

You will have your bib number once the waivers are released. One can start to guess corrals after that, but one does not know with any certainty until expo time.

Again, you can estimate corral based on folks posts. Most will post bib number and guestimated times so the correlation can be figured out. You can start to gain a relative positioning idea of where you are located.

Well the good news is that my running outfits have been ordered, so If my training flops and I'm as slow as molasses, at least I'll look fun while doing it! After going between about 15 different character themes I finally decided on Tinkerbell for the 5k (I could only imagine doing the wings for 3.1 miles.) Snow white for the 1/2, and Belle for the full. I checked into doing cheap Halloween costumes, but decided to go the normalish running clothes route and accessorize from there. I can't wait to get everything, and will definitely post pictures when I do!

I have two questions for you guys:

1. My DH is going to be running/walking in his first 5k at WDW. His shins are really bothering him and I've bought icyhot and he takes advil before we walk/run every night. Any other suggestions for shin splints? I told him maybe he can ride his bike every other day or something while I run/walk.

2. I got the e-mail from Disney today about the race and how I can get a floral arrangement or something to celebrate the race. Does anyone have a website for another shop in the area that I can get a nice display to help celebrate my DH's accomplishment? I would like it to be Disney-themed but a better price than what my e-mail is offering.

On a side note....I also do zumba and I inspired a girl at my class to start running. Well, tonight was her first night attempting to run and while she was out, she encountered a skunk trying to cross the road in front of her. At the time she was getting pretty winded, but when she saw his tail up in the air she took off like a rocket and ran all the way home. :scared1: I'm not sure if she will want to go out again. She will probably just stick to zumba in a nice, safe, well-lit gym. LOL! :lmao:

Ask DH to not run for a couple weeks. Tell him biking is OK in this time UNLESS his shins start to hurt on the bike. Ice a couple times a day and consider continuing the NSAIDS.

If his shins still hurt in two weeks, get to a doctor to rule out hard tissue (bone) injury.

In the mean time, what about his shoes? Are they running shoes? were they fitted at a running store? How many miles are on the shoes? Chances are they need replaced. Near the end of the two week period get to a running store. Bring the old shoes and make sure to tell the person fitting about the shin issues.

I would not run every night as a newly. Every other night is fine with a bike or even a walk in between. Overuse injuries are one of the most frequent reasons for sidelining a person heading into the big race.

Finally a PSA.....

Taking a NSAID prior to a run can cause kidney damage. It is not wise to take a NSAID within 8-12 hours pre run. Generally, these issues do not present themselves for a 5 k type event but from a practicable stand point.... does it make sense to take a pain med to prevent a pain that is purely voluntary?

Get to a doctor if this does not clear up in a couple weeks

Maybe it wasn't such a good idea for me to check out the board before I went for my run this morning. Now I am going to be looking around for skunks on the trail. If I get skunked this morning I will blame you,:goodvibes

Hi Everyone,
Could we chat a bit about hydration? Everybody says to be hydrating pretty seriously in the days before a race, with a goal of light-yellow urine the night before. Well, I always try to do this, but then again, I seem to over-do it. I end up in the bushes a mile into the race, despite going through the port-a-potty line as many times as possible before heading to the corral.

How do I achieve a happy medium??

Any tips would be much appreciated, both by me, and by my husband who always has to stand around waiting for me to emerge from the bushes!

Without going to way too much info....

nervous energy plays a huge roll on race day AM. Practice just like you would on race day for your next long run. Chances are that you do not have the urges you feel on race day morning.

Think about your last race. Was your 'mile in' event a 'full' event or was it just one where the urge left as soon as you started the event (i.e. not a lot of volume). If the latter then most likely it is nervous energy and try to push through it.

I suffer from these urges and have found that I can just run through them. About 20 minutes into the race the need to go is long gone. Or at least until I am in a tough running spot and I see a porta potty...

From a tuning perspective, if your urine is still light and nearly clear on race AM, then limit your intake to 16 or less oz of fluids on race morning. See how that works.

Nervous energy really could have something to do with it. That makes a lot of sense. I tend to get very anxious before races. (This is silly, as I'm not out there to break any records, just to have fun, but for some reason I do tend to freak out a little bit!)

I have had the experience where the "urge" will dissipate if I wait it out a bit.

In my most recent race, though, it was a "full" event, rather than just a nervous urge, so I'm guessing I must have overdone it that morning with the liquids.

Thank you very much for the quick input!

I have hit a big block in my training, I have not gone out for a run since I did the Daytona Half Marathon about 10 days ago. I was not feeling good before the race with a consistent head ache and then continued for a whole week and then found a pain in the back of my head and went to the ER. I found out everything in my head was fine and I was found to have mono from over working myself, that's what it's called these days. So now I can't train for another week at maximum, hoping to get back out there this weekend. I'm not so worried about Goofy, it''s just I have a marathon coming up in 19 days and have not gone out training in a while. I know I will still finish, I have no problem getting to 26.2 miles, it's just my time won't be where I want it to be.

Along that same subject line, are the bathrooms open at Epcot for the 5k or any other bathrooms available during the race? TIA!

cewait - thanks for the info! I'll pass it along to my DH and hopefully he'll listen and not overdo it. The problem is that this is a big motivating factor for him to loose weight. so we'll have to try alternate exercises to get him ready or we'll just have to walk the race.

I am sure all spots will be open. The one I used to hit on marathon boring was Morocco. It's large, easy in and easy out. For the 5k about half way. Others are Germany, Italy, Canada, and the one near the Kodak spot up front.... though ou only have .15 mile from there so why bother.

Have your hubby do pushups, squats, lunges, (jumping jack after running again) and burps (squat thrusts for folks my age) 3-4 times a week. If he focusses on those the next 10 days he may not realize he misses running.

THink of it as a long recovery and longer taper. Get well over getting through the marathon

I had a good treadmill run this morning. Six miles, negative splits, good stride. I train alone and was pleased how fast time went while I was talking to the fitness center guy.

I hope to strike up conversations with other runners in January. Just to pass the time and not focus on me, my feet, my breathing, me, my feet...

This is a pull back week and I'm going to enjoy it.

Ronda

I hope my doctor gives me the clearance to start running again. It's been 6 weeks since my injury and I need to get back to training for the half in January.
