OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

I got my 9 miles in today on the treadmill. I have ordered a Garmin 305. I wanted something that would truly help me monitor my pace so that I can do some runs outside.

No. I trained up for one in April (St Louis). The temps were so warm they closed the full course and made the slowpokes take the half turn. Mickey will be my first. You?

January will be my first full. I ran the inaugural Princess Half Marathon a couple of years ago. That is my longest race to date. Otherwise, I've only ever done 5Ks. I am doing a walk/run for the full. I just want to finish without being swept. I'm not worrying about time otherwise.

Thanks for telling me to hang in there. Today was finally a good run (3.5 miles). :-). I also managed 7 miles (first ever) on Friday, but it was hard.

So another question.... I tend to drink a little bit of water often. For the half, should I get a belt, handheld or ???? What does everyone else do? Fairly sure I need water more often than every mile.

Also, staying at poly.... What's the best way to get to the race? And what time do I need to leave?

Thanks!

Cherie Way to hang in there on your long run! I am also a "regular drinker" ;) ---I take a sip every mile. For that reason, and to make sure I am never without, I run with a hydration belt (Nathan 2-bottle). It is a personal preference thing. Disney will have water stops, of course, with sufficient fluids, but if you are used to training with a specific fluid or you just want the freedom of being able to drink at the moment you want, then having something with you makes sense.

You need to try something out on your training runs. Maybe you could start by just carrying a water bottle with you on your next long run to see what that is like. Also, go to a running store and try on various belts. They differ in how they feel around the waist, where they sit on your back and how the bottles are held. I picked the Nathan because it felt the best and the bottle cages are rigid, so it was easier for me to get the bottles back in easily while I run (I don't stop to drink).

As for race transport...you can take the monorail and leave a little later than the rest of us taking buses! I think 4-4:30, but others will have a better idea.

T-t-t-today, the w-w-weather was f-f-forty-one degr-r-r-rees. BRRRRRR!

I've already been out this morning to buy some cold weather running clothes. A wicking thermal shirt that I can wear with shorts for cool days. A running pullover and long pants for COLD days. I really wanted the "media pocket", but that would have added about 20 bucks. I'll deal. :)

So, do you folks have any good advice for trying to run when it's under 40 degrees? I started running back in May, so this is my first encounter with arctic runs.

Doug

Doug-embrace the cold! Get some gloves and either a hat or band that covers your ears. Don't overdress for the weather because you will certainly warm up quickly. For me personally, I would rather start cold and finish comfortable than start comfortable and finish hot. You just might be surprised how well you run in the cold!

We had 30 degree morning over the weekend. Hat, gloves, running tights and light jacket for now until it gets cold.

I bought the 305 a few weeks ago. It has helped me with the pacing and workouts. You should like it.

I agree. I bought a 305 back in April when I started running. I love uploading runs to garmin connect and reviewing the run and my HR. I set mine to track my mile splits.

Doug - I second the cold embrace ; )

When you step out the front door you should still feel chilled. You will heat up FAST.

Cherie - I carry an Ultimate Direction strap bottle on my runs - all of them. I'm a sipper, too. Congrats on the long run!

Yooper - yup, just finish is my goal, too.

Anyone planning on running in costume? I'd like to figure out something cute to wear.

I'm not planning to run in costume per se, but I do plan on wearing character themed outfits. I am thinking about a tink themed outfit similar to this for the 1/2, and a goofy themed outfit with blue on the bottom and an orange shirt for the full. I'm only going to wear running/ workout clothes, but theme them towards a costume type outfit.

Officially registerd with my partner for the Chip n Dale relay!!! :cool1: super excited! Also, the Nike+ just came out with a new app on the iphone, called Nike+ GPS. It is so much more accurate than the older app, and it maps your runs on the google maps page. It also shows you your pace throughout the run and where you run faster and slower...really cool!! :thumbsup2

I use Nike + gps. Awesome app and I think it was all of $1.99. With my phone don't even need the sneaker chip anymore.

For costume I'm thinking themed running stuff as well , tinker bell or Minnie . Minnie prob easier to pull off. Doubt I could wear the tutu skirt, I'm sure it would rub on my arms and drive me crazy. I just did a "dirty girl" race and saw a lot of people abandon their costumes for similar reasons. Crowns don't go well climbing under mud covered nets : ) we had team outfits but even my hairtie got pulled off.

For the person that asked about a running belt

My rules are > 5 miles bring water , smaller belt (I modified a fuel belt to only have 2 little bottles)
> 10 miles bring larger water bottle plus beans or gel, tissues, pepper spray and a cell phone : ) (injured myself once in the middle of no where and learned a huge lesson limping 5 miles back to town then begging the people at a drugstore to use the phone to call home)

Off to do 12 it's my long day.... Happy running
