OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

Well, I started this morning, got up at 4:55 am, did my Couch to 5k (LOVE that iphone app!) and feel pretty good right now! Going to walk another 2.2 at lunch.
:thumbsup2
My first half marathon of the year (second half marathon ever) is in 4 weeks. Due to my recent move (bought a house) Im behind on training. I ran 8 miles the other day and then came down with the flu (still suffering) hope to get on track and get my mileage up there before the day of the race.

Although I have to say doing 8 miles now seems way easier than when I was training for my first half marathon back in the fall. I think running and longer distances are getting easier for me.

They do, I honestly think you keep a certain level of fitness and it gets better over the years, thats what I seem to have found anyway, seems to take less to make me tick along now.

Not only do they get easier, they seem less daunting too. Pretty soon, when someone asks you how far you ran one morning, you'll find yourself saying, only 10 (or 12 or whatever the number may be). That's when you know you're a runner. :)

Totally this. My longest run to date is 14, and I often say I'm only going out for 10.

I normally do around 5 and I think of myself as a runner.

Even if you only do 1 mile I think you are a runner.
I mean have you seen some folk run for a bus?;)

I picked back up Yoga too in the past months and I really think that has helped my running as far as recovery too. Makes a BIG difference!

You (include us in that you btw!) people are sick!

DH is bugging dd and I to do Marathon weekend 2012 -

I'm kicking and screaming "NO no NO no no " (it has something to do with coming in last in 2010 - and declaring I"M NEVER GOING TO DO THIS EVER AGAIN! period!)

Seriously, we were hoping on taking a vacation to Europe, but the costs are outrageous.... and then dh got an email from his partner in 2010 - DH was able to "lead" a blind runner, Chris emailed dh and asked if he'd like to do it again! :faint:

So maybe I'll let dh do the marathon...

and can I just say - omg the weekend - Jan 4 - isnt that like CRAZY crowded time at Disney?

I cant believe I'm even contemplating this again.

The other wrench in the cogwheel is dd is starting high school, and she's taking several honors classes - and she's starting to panic about the workload, and knows she cant possibly miss 2 days of school - and she cant believe we'd considering going without her...

Oh I wanted to ask what kind of memboralia/souvenirs can you expect in the parks for the Half, Full and Goofy Challenge

I just started collecting Vinylmations and saw that they had one for each event for 2010, 2011! I hope they do them all again for 2012

This is probably the one and only time I will do the Disney races so Id like something to remember it all by for years to come (including the medals).

Tees, etc? I ordered the pin!!

Of course, I say its my one and only time, but I'll sure I will love it and wind up running them again at some point.

I seem to only recall seeing the vinyls in some of the larger stores (ie Emporium, MouseGears, World of Disney). I don't shop for much clothing at Disney, but nothing jumped out at me and said "Marathon Weekend" anywhere I cruised through.

There was quite a bit available at the expo, though.

Can someone tell me when they begin to offer the "runner's retreat" for sale?

Thanks!

finished first week of couch25K and lost 6 pounds! started again this morning.

I'm running my second half-marathon in 2 weeks. Yesterday, I went out for 12 miles. The findings...

Positive: About a week ago, I realized I was heel-striking. I started watching my stride, and inhaling through my nose and mouth. The result has been a huge increase in speed, about 1 min/mile.

Negative: After the Princess, I only ran 10 miles in 5 weeks due to bad cold, vacation, and scheduling. I think it really hurt my endurance and I was really fighting the last 3 miles, walking around half of it.

Negative: Hydration. It was warmer than I was used to, around 62 degrees. I went out 4 miles, then stopped at the car for water, then another 4 miles and another water stop, then another 4 miles. I ended up in pretty bad shape, and even after drinking some when I got home I was still down about 3 pounds. This could be part of the endurance problem, too. I ordered 2 8oz water bottles that attach to my running belt, so hopefully this helps on future long runs.

I'm feeling pretty great today. Nothing really more than a little minor soreness. Definitely could run again today, though I won't. In the next few weeks I plan on going from two 3-mile midweek runs to three 4-mile runs and alternating long weekend runs between 6 and 12 miles. Then, when the Goofy plan comes out, I'll be ready!!!

Stressing a little because my first half marathon of the year is in 3 weeks!!

Ive only gotten up to 8 miles because of moving into a new house and now being really sick for a week. I cant stop coughing enough to climb the stairs no less go out for a 10 miler.

Ive done a half before and have kept up my running to the tune of 7 and 8 milers mostly.

Im hoping to be better sometime this week to do another 8 and then a 10 on Sunday and just do another 10-12 next weekend.

Im nervous that its close and I wont get the training mileage in. I guess if anything I can at least finish but it might be a slow finish! BOOOOO

Don't push yourself too much though. If you are still sick you will be miserable and finish slower...as opposed to possibly just finishing slower. (And thank you for the siggie comment earlier. :goodvibes)

DISCLAIMER: There is nothing wrong with slower. Slower still finishes.

I only made it to 8 miles in mid December before my first half, WDW, this past January. I finished fine, I just took lots of walking breaks! You'll be fine too!

Tomorrow I will attempt my first run in over a week - Im just going to go out for a 5 and see how I feel. Hopefully I can squeeze in one or two more long distance runs before the race.

I did pretty well on my first HALF last year and would love to improve my time!

Trust your body. Don't push it too hard. Enjoy the good weather!

I have been quite a running slump since our move from Ohio to South Carolina. I've been to the doctor about a running health problem and that resulted in some mandatory time off, and I'm just having trouble getting back on the horse. I submitted grades for my spring semester at work yesterday, and I need to get it together and refocus. Wish me luck as I get my head together! If anybody has a great story to tell about coming back after medical time off, I'll listen!

2 stories...

I was an avid bicycle rider. Stopped riding for 15 years then got back into riding. TOOK THINGS SLOWLY. At age 55 I became stronger than ever before because I laid out a plan of recovery and stuck with it.

This past January, at 60yo, after 11 months of training, I walked WDW's 5K, 1/2M and the Full. Continued to walk since January because DW and I will be going to DL in Sept. for our C2C Medal.

Now, 5 1/2 weeks ago on a 100 mile bike ride I crashed at 77.25 miles. Result was C6 fracture and clavicle fracture. With neck in a collar, arm in a sling, flat on my back in ICU I ask my Neuro-surgeon and Orthopedic-surgeon when I can get back to walking. After a couple of days in hospital room they tell me that after a week being home I can get back to walking. I set a recovery plan up in my mind and my first walk was .66 mile stilll in neck collar and sling. I was so weak that DW continued on with the walk we usually do together.

Following my plan, this past Sunday with neck still in collar, I left our house at 3:20AM and walked 7.5 miles. Returned to house to get DW and we went out for 6.2 miles. I felt great. This morning, after DW went to work, I went out for 10 miles. Today's walk was not a planned walk rather a spur of the moment walk and I will admit that at the time of this posting I am feeling GREAT even though I am still in neck collar and should find out tomorrow if a fusing of my neck will be in my near future.

Moral of my stories... plan your return, know your body, feel your body as you return and DO NOT OVER DO THINGS.

Good luck.
