OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

Dh and I did our long run today. I just want to go on the record and say I hope we have cooler temps in Orlando than what we had in S. Alabama today. It was 73 with about 76% humidity. Perhaps, it's the Irish in me but I was dying. We actually had to stop at Walgreen's during the run so I could buy more water. I went to the bathroom and my face was Christmas red -- which is funny because I was wearing a bright green shirt. I looked like a giant tomato by the time we finished our 10 miles. I've spent the better part of the day sucking down water but I still feel drained. We've had really cold temps here and today was a drastic switch and I think I over-dressed too.

I hoping for anything in the 40-50's for race day. Perhaps, I should see Santa about my request.....:santa:

Actually I went ahead and did my long run of 8 miles yesterday so I could do it outside. It was going to be the best weather day this week. Temps were upper 40s then compared to upper 20s today and tomorrow with snow on Friday. I figured it would be okay especially since I am just doing the half.

KAA1972-I would LOVE LOVE LOVE your temps even with the humidity!!!!!!!!!

I am using DH's login - he (Todd) has serious plantar fasciitis and after trying everything - shot, orthotics, etc., is just not going to be able to do it. I have run one half before but have not trained to run the whole half this time. I am planning on doing the Galloway run/walk/run 3:1 method and was wondering if there was a group that would be doing this? I have never run any race solo and need some moral support! :cheer2: Any help greatly appreciated!

I will be using the run/walk method! I usually do 3:30/1:30, sometimes 3:1...just depends on how I feel. DH was supposed to go w/me and run/walk too, but work won't let him go, so I will be running solo as well. Would love to know if there is a group!

I'll be doing run/walk (though I do a 10:1 interval). I always do in half-marathons/marathons. Often, I end up playing "leap frog" with runners who aren't doing intervals but are running at a similar pace.

I run/walk as well. I have been most comfortable this year doing a 3/2 - have done 5/3 in the past but felt the 3 was too long for my walk interval and I haven't gotten my cardio good enough again to maintain 5 for the run this year.

Anyone changing their normal weekend running to accommodate Christmas?

I am actually going to do my long run on Friday morning, rather than Saturday (Christmas) or Sunday (day after, duh). I figure, my MIL will have just arrived and I am sure I will have several cocktails on Christmas night :rotfl2:. I would already have my long run over with before imbibing in good food and drink.

Anyone else or am I just nuts?

Also, used some KT tape today for a sore top of foot and it worked great! :thumbsup2

I also am having to move my 10-12 miler this weekend to a different day but most likely it will be sometime like next Wed or Thursday. We are traveling to NC tomorrow to see my mom for Christmas and will be in the car for 12 hours :scared1: and then it will Christmas eve and that will be busy. Then they are expecting snow starting Christmas morning :santa: and still expect to have snow through the weekend into Monday. Wednesday and Thursday look like they might warm up and be sunny. But it might be cool to get a little run in the snow (of course I am not planning on going out when the snow is coming down - although it might bring back memories of the half last year.)

So not sure if I should put off the 10-12 miler that long or just get out there and do it closer to Sunday which is my normal long run day anyway. I just don't want to do the 10-12 miler too close to my 8 miler I am planning on getting in Sunday Jan 2 when we get home from NC.

run/walk for me too! usually 4:1 but i may do 3:30/1:30 depending on how i'm feeling.

What's your estimated finish time?

If I remember right, we should be in the same corral. My pace including walks is around 12:30. I'd like to finish between 2:30:00 and 2:45:00.

Deleckdesign/VerticalChaos: I would love to meet up with ya'll! We are getting in on Thursday evening and are staying at the Old Key West and I'm guessing I'm in last corral since I didn't provide proof of time. If you're interested (and anyone else) send me a message. I am also planning on finishing around 2:30-2:45 since the last time I ran a half I did it in 2:15. Let's hope! :woohoo:

It's in that range. My pace in the 15K came out at 11:59. WHA????? Freaked me out. Hee! And that was on hills!! Who knows what I'll do there. LOL.

My bib's 33243. Woo!!

I'm going to be busy, but yeah if we can all say hi that would be cool. I get in at 10:35 Thursday night, am walking the 5K with my sis, then heading to the Expo. Not sure what we're doing that afternoon, but I know I've got running club teammates who will be there AND I'll be doing something with my official running partner for the race (who I'll meet for the first time this weekend. HA!). I'm feeling pretty popular! :P

I'm staying at All Star Music. At least that's the plan.

I'd love to meet up somewhere at the race - my bib # is 34534 :)
I'll be the short chick w/brown curly hair and glasses standing alone :upsidedow

We are getting in Thursday morning and staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge!

The last time I (attempted) to run a half was last May - 6 wks of "training" - ran the first half and ran out of steam on the second half and nearly crawled to the end - that resulted in a 2:59:00 finish time. Hoping it goes much better this time 'round!

I'm going to be cheering DH (and all the other Dis'ers) during the full after running the half. I've been reading on some other threads that a really tough spot is by McD's Hill. I'm going to drive DH over to the start at about 3:30. We may get a Race Retreat Goofy package for both of us so I'll hang out in there until they kick me out while hubby goes to the start -- or I'll just hang out in the car. I wanted to see him run mile 4 at Epcot and then try to make it to MK. Would it be possible to make it to McD's hill? If so, how would I get there? Drive?

Then, I would like to head back to our resort and pick up DD. We are staying at Bonnet Creek -- which on the maps it looks like it is on E. Buena Vista and near Backstage Lane and Epcot Center Drive. Would this be possible? Could I make it in time to see DH finish? I'm not familiar with the road closures for the full so I'm not sure how that would impact driving. I expect he will average about a 12- 12:30 minute mile for the full.

Getting in and out of the McD hill is a tough one but better than AK. You could get to the McD hill and there are two ways to get there. Backing up you can get to MK with little issue on the monorail. You have the option of Main Street or the TTC/Poly. You may be able to do Main and Poly but that can be tight. From the MK area you would monorail back to Epcot. Once at Epcot you could either grab an All Stars bus or drive to McD. You have about 72 minutes to get from Poly to McD. Then from McD you have about 84 minutes to get your DD and get back to Epcot. The last link seems to predicate driving to assure that you can get to the resort and back to Epcot in time. The biggest rub is the intersection at McD. The traffic will be bad. There is a lane of traffic open from AK to the same intersection as the McD and that seems like is has that intersection backed up every year…as a runner, the line of cars is long and moving really slow.

I guess another option would be to skip Poly and try to get DD prior to McD. If I couldn't get to McD's, is there a better place to support runners that would be easier to get to? I definitely want to try to find a spot anything after 18. Any other recommendations? We will have park tickets with hoppers if you think that might be easier.

A little more casual approach would be after the Poly, head back to the resort by monorail and resort bus (I assume Bonnet has a bus at Epcot) to pick up your DD. Then head back to Epcot and enjoy the park for a while with the aim of meeting DH at England where we come back into the park. It is just before Mile 25 of the race and a friendly face there is a really nice pick me up. You will not be able to get to the finish line before he does unless he is really hurting; but will get to the family reunion area about the same time he makes his way through the finish line stuff.

Note that even with a car you are harder pressed to get all the way to AK. From McD through the DHS park gate is almost a non starter for seeing him as there is no where to park easily. Anything from DHS through England makes the finish coordination tougher.

What about parking at Beach Club and walking to DHS? I could possibly have nanny bring DD on bus to Epcot and walk through park and meet us there -- then walk back stretch to DHS. Any chance we would make it back for the finish?

The big issue with that approach is that the sidewalk along the canal is narrow and overly crowded and any extra foot traffic would make it even worse.

Ran my long run today and made it 10 miles. The last mile was a bit rough - my knees started hurting - everything else felt great though and if it weren't for my knees, I could've ran and ran and ran. Going to taper to 7 or 8 miles next weekend..
