OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

I'm going to be busy, but yeah if we can all say hi that would be cool. I get in at 10:35 Thursday night, am walking the 5K with my sis, then heading to the Expo. Not sure what we're doing that afternoon, but I know I've got running club teammates who will be there AND I'll be doing something with my official running partner for the race (who I'll meet for the first time this weekend. HA!). I'm feeling pretty popular! :P

I'm staying at All Star Music. At least that's the plan.

I'd love to meet up somewhere at the race - my bib # is 34534 :)
I'll be the short chick w/brown curly hair and glasses standing alone :upsidedow

We are getting in Thursday morning and staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge!

The last time I (attempted) to run a half was last May - 6 wks of "training" - ran the first half and ran out of steam on the second half and nearly crawled to the end - that resulted in a 2:59:00 finish time. Hoping it goes much better this time 'round!

Thanks for the replies. We got pounded with snow here in NC which dampened my plans for a long Sunday run. Going to try and get out this weekend but still on the fence about doing it - getting up at 3 am by myself with no partner has got me feeling down.:scared1: There will be tons of people there, but I'll probably be in black running tights and a pink top. Blonde hair, 5'3" on a good day. Good luck to everyone!

I am sure that you will be the only one dressed like that.:lmao:

I just tried a new Gu Roctane flavor today during my long run just in case anyone is still searching for a more palatable flavor...it is Pineapple and luckily without Caffeine (I can't have caffeine which is challenging in the gel category). But, it was actually pretty tasty and I don't usually even like Pineapple! :)

Pineapple Roctane is my FAVORITE. I can't do caffeine, either. I use Gu Chomps in orange, blueberry, and watermelon and pineapple Roctane.

Did my longest run of 10 this past Friday and my knees started hurting at 8.5 miles. It wasn't real bad, so I just kept going until I was finished.

I iced them later that day and for the next couple days. They seemed better yesterday so I went to the gym for a short 3-miler. I got to about 2.5 miles and they started hurting again. I iced them again afterwards...and woke up in the middle of the night last with them aching pretty bad. I've been icing, taking pain meds. Now this has me worried about the race next weekend.

Should I not run anymore before the race? Any other tips for making them feel better faster?

Rest and ice. Do not run this weekend

They have Gu Chomps in Watermelon now?!? :worship: I also love the Gu Chomps in Orange and Blueberry too. I definitely need to try Watermelon!

Yep, but for some reason they're really hard to find! My running store in my hometown up north always has them, but my local Fleet Feet in Sarasota rarely has them in stock. In fact, they only started carrying them recently and always seem to run out! Maybe I can buy a whole box somewhere online...

Hubby got laid off from his job today :(

He had signed up to do the half w/me months ago when his employer said he could go...then they went back on their word and said he couldn't go. Well, he was laid off today and it looks like he might be going w/me after all. Not a good reason - I'd rather he kept his job - but it will be nice to get away for a few days. Not sure if he's going to do the race or not...hope so!

Did you try Fit 2 Run in Sarasota off of University. They have a lot of stuff although they are in the process of moving.

I'm really sorry to hear your hubbies news. It's nice that he'll be able to come with you, but what a reason. :guilty:

The Gu Energy online store prices actually look pretty good and they have flavors I have never seen in the stores out here so I will definitely place an order. Thanks for the heads up about the Watermelon Chomps! :)

I am sorry to hear that, but I must admit that it would be cool if he still ran the half. What a great opportunity to take such a horrible time and turn into achieving an awesome goal like completing a half marathon. Most people wouldn't do something like that and I bet future employers would love to hear that. Kind of a when life gives you lemons, make lemonade kind of situation! I hope that 2011 has a lot of good things in store for you both. :)

I agree! It is a horrible situation but as a college professor who teaches interviewing to graduating students -- I have to admit that it would be one impressive story for your husband to tell in his next job interview. Definitely a way to demonstrate his commitment to bouncing back from tough times and overcoming obstacles. I know it may not seem that way right now but it will in the future. I've been there so I know how heart-breaking that can be!! Hang in there and no that we are there to support you and wish you the best!

 Sending positive thoughts that 2011 brings some pixie job dust your husband's way.

Glad he can go w/you!

I don't get up there often, but I DO have a Fit 2 Run gift card that I won at a Turkey Trot. I really should go. We tried to buy our shirts for the marathon there, but they close early on Sundays - we went to Sports Authority instead, and ended up ordering from Running Warehouse. Anyway, that's what my gift card would have gone to, but you're right, I should see about Gu!

I was hoping to get opinions from Coach and the others who are more experienced runners...

I posted a few weeks ago that I was having some pain in the front of my kneecap after a run on the treadmill. The next day it hurt enough where I had to limp to walk. I took off the next few days until it felt fine to walk, icing and taking advil the whole time. I went out for a run, and at about 2.4 miles, I started feeling a twinge and stopped and walked. Next day, just like the day after the first time, it was hurting enough to have to limp.

I went to the doctor, thinking this was something terribly wrong, and he said that it is an overuse injury. If he took an arthroscope in there, he would see lots of red, inflamed tissue. I asked him if I could run the 1/2 marathon, of course he said I shouldn't and that it would take more time to get back to normal if I did. Not doing the marathon is not an option, I told him. He suggested running 1 mile, see if it hurts the next day, building up to 2 miles, and so on in order to get back into it. He did also tell me that I would do no permanent damage to it by doing the marathon. It would just hurt a lot. :scared1:

I would love opinions. I have gotten a couple friends who are runners who say I should stay off of it until the 1/2 and hopefully I will be able to complete the half with less pain. This is what I have been doing so far. This initial injury happened on December 16, and I went for the other run on December 21, so I have not run since then. I'm obviously going crazy not running, and a little worried I may lose some endurance for the race. We have run our 10 miles on December 11, so that is completed but I was planning to do a 12-miler that is not happening. What do you think? Should I sit running out until the race? Or do you think I can try running a bit on it?

I would personally stop running on it and instead turn your training into walking a half marathon as a Plan B. Hal Higdon has a program just for that. Just see what point that program is up to because I am not that familiar with it. If Endurance is your concern, can you ask your doctor if it is okay to walk in the pool for those distances or ride the stationary bike? You should really start going down on distance anyway...so doing some low impact should be okay as long as your doctor supports the idea. Good Luck!

I have a clothing question. If the starts are going to be in the 40s, and that's looking possible, I need some advice on shirt layers. I want to pin my bib to my bottom layer and don't know what this should be. I will probably wear shorts or a running skirt on the lower half, but will it be warm enough for a singlet or should I go with a long sleeved tech shirt? I hope to be done with the half by 7:30-7:45ish, so it'll still be chilly then, but the full is going to take me awhile. I just don't want to have to do a lot of adjusting. I will have a throw away layer each day, I'm just trying to figure out what should go under that. I do tend to run warm, but with only wearing shorts, I may want a warmer top???? I just don't know. I figure I'll just pack it all, but am trying to think ahead.

Your problem sounds the same as mine. I did my 10 mile on Dec 24th and started having knee pain around 8.5 miles. I iced the next few days and felt good enough on Tuesday to run again. I went to the gym thinking I'd be fine for 3 miles, but by 2.5, they started to ache again. I have been icing ever since and resting and don't plan to run again until the race. I'm hoping it's enough so that I don't have to suffer through the entire race.

I had planned on doing the run/walk for the race, but may end up walking most of it. My husband is going now (wasn't supposed to before) and he's a bit behind on his training...so we are just going to slow it down and enjoy the scenery!

Do you think a knee strap or some other support would help?
It's been AMAZING for me. Granted, my knee pain is on the side of the knee, but maybe it would help you too?
