Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

It's a Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious day. Bib number and Mickey mail all in the same day. :yay: Does it get any better than that! :cool1:

Do I have to print something out or can i just go in and look and print the form out later? I'm on a laptop without a printer. TIA.

I submitted a 2-hour finishing time and got bib #4934. I plan on stopping for characters and other photo ops to fully take advantage of this being my first official race. Life got in the way  and I missed some runs, so i'm thinking my actual time will be a little slower. Now I know for next race to start the training plan a few weeks early so when those curveballs come at me, it's ok to miss a week.
Plus, my Mickey Mail came today! and also the maps I ordered. I am getting so excited for this trip! :woohoo:

#2184 for a 62yo speed-walker. Happy to go where-ever they put me. :thumbsup2

I'm 2611 which really surprises me. I'm happy but shocked that I'm that far forward. I may move back since I have a half marathon the following weekend...

:rotfl2: This is EXACTLY how I felt when I got in A for Tinker Bell! hahahaha! I was like "you've gotta be kidding me." When I walked into the corral, I went straight to the back of it! Anyone else coming in was more than welcome to go up ahead! No problem. Don't worry about it though! I could tell there were some others in there just as intimidated as I was...and they weren't ALL elites! Once the fireworks went off, I forgot all about it and had a blast!

Glad to know it is not just me :goodvibes I'm not freaking out as much as I did earlier, it is starting to settle in.

One thing I am happy that I will have that much of a buffer zone between me and the sweepers :woohoo:

Hi! I'm new to this part of the boards. DH and I will be attending the TOT 10 miler and I'm getting nervous reading your posts. Everybody seems to be ready to go. I ran my first 5k ever in May. But since then, I got a new job and got to move and I nearly did not train since the end of June. While many of you have already run the 10 miles or something close to it, the most I did run was 6 miles last Saturday.
I'm afraid I wont be ready on time for the race and I'm dreading the balloon lady. I'm trying to adapt my training to the time left. So far, I'm comfortable at a pace that vary between 14:30 and 15:00 minutes per mile. I tried to talk DH into Galloway's program but he does not like the walk/run method. So we are running continuously, but really slowly.
My plan for the upcoming weeks is to run 8miles on 09/01, 6 miles on 09/08, 10 miles on 09/15 and 6 miles again on 09/22. I will also try to run 3 or 4 miles 2 or 3 nights during the week.
Does that sounds like a doable plan? Any tips would be welcomed.
Thanks a lot!

Okay, I am 3194 and my friend is 3193...any guesses as to what corral we'll be in? And how many are there?

I got #3551. I'm actually kind-of surprised it's that high, but I'm running my first marathon in a couple of weeks, which I'm completely not ready for. So, I'm not going to sweat it.

I've got so much going on in my 'regular' life right now, that training hasn't been #1 priority for me. I was on vacation in Europe for 2 weeks and came back to 12-hour shifts, 5-days a week. And I'm getting ready for my retirement ceremony in 5 weeks (with that marathon and this race in between).

I know I can finish these races standing up. I'm just going to focus on having fun. Next year, I'm all about the training. :)

People are getting waivers?! Nothing here yet, but I always seem to be among the last to get stuff from runDisney races.

And anyway, I'm feeling a lot less excited about the race being so soon and a lot more apprehensive, thanks to my "long" run Saturday. :sad2: I wound up taking both Thurs. and Fri. off from exercise due to prepping for Isaac and back-to-school for my son, and weather Sat. morning was cool(er) and cloudy - yay! I felt great - totally ready to rock my 5-mile cut-back run - but IT band syndrome hit at 3 miles and there was no way to continue: the pain in my knee was FIERCE. It didn't hurt much to walk slowly, so I hobbled back to my car and called it a day, feeling completely let down.

As seems to be the case with ITBS, I was fine an hour or so later, so I went for a walk-run with my son yesterday at his pace (read: s l o w) - it was okay until the very end, around 2.5 miles, when the weird tension that denotes IT band pain to come started again.

Here's the thing - stretching doesn't do anything because it's not a flexibility issue; I'm a dancer and yoga devotee - those stretches don't actually stretch anything because I go right into them and could stay there all day. What I'm sure started the ITBS rolling is a difference in leg lengths, thanks to scoliosis, combined with long runs that vary where I am on our steeply canted pavement. On short runs, I'm always on a road facing oncoming traffic, so the slant goes down on my left, and my left leg is the longer of the two. But long runs include time on sidewalks and paths that slant to the right, too, and I suspect that's the root cause.

Anyway, I'm worried about that 10 miles now. What I'm supposed to do at this point to deal with the ITBS is only run until it starts hurting and then STOP, no matter how far I've gone. Long term, that distance should steadily increase. But I doubt it'll get up to 10 miles between now and Sept. 29. My last few long runs have been 7, 7.5, 8.5, 9, and 10, with cut-back weeks between them. Is that enough to rest on before the race if I can't go more than 4 or 5 miles between now and then?

Ugh - so not how I thought this would go. :sad1:

My running partner has trouble with her IT band usually aggravates It quicker when running on uneven surfaces (usually she runs on the inside on the gutter). Once she found out I move over more now but she has to go to the chiropractor (her and her husband have the same problem actually) to get herself straightened out. Might be worth talking to someone?

Sounds very similar to my situation. My first and only other race was the 5k at WDW in Jan. of this year. Between then and now, I had surgery, which got in the way of my training. I'm back on track (somewhat) now, but on my current training plan, my longest run before race day will be 8 miles. And I'm so slow! I'm hoping the excitement of the race carries me through and keeps me fast enough...and I'm going to try to focus on the fun, not my time. Worst case, I will walk. DH assures me I'll be fine and sounds like you're ahead of me, so I think you'll have no trouble with this plan. Good luck and have fun!

They posted it for the Disneyland Half officially on the runDisney website. That's what I mean by "they". :)

Wow-- I can't seem to find this on the website, even now. It certainly would cut down the number of emails they have to answer. If you have the link, can you post it? I'd love to know where to look!

It's here: http://as1.wdpromedia.com/media/eww...-marathon/2012/2012-CorralAssignmentsDLHM.pdf

On the rundisney website, select the DL half, then the runner info tab, then final race instructions...in the body of that is where I saw the link to corral assignments. First time I've seen them do this, it's great!

That definitely sounds doable! Don't worry if you haven't run a full ten miles; most training programs for races don't have you run the full amount before race day so as long as you've done 6 to 8 miles before, you should be fine, though perhaps a bit sore.

The Galloway method is great, so I'm sorry your husband won't do it, but I would encourage you to walk through water stations and to take breaks for pictures whenever needed.

My other advice would be to get some hill runs in if you haven't. This race looks to be largely outside the parks, which means a lot of up and down highway ramps. Hills will help build endurance for that and speed in other areas.

Above all, though, know you are going to have a good time, and make that a priority. I mean, you're running at Disney World! How freaking awesome is that? So just get out there and do your best and enjoy an awesome night!

Hope this helps. :-) Best of luck!

Woo hoo! Got my Bib number! 1617!
That's a nice number! Consecutive number & it rhymes! That's with a projected finish time of 100 mins.:cheer2:

DH and I are 5318 and 5320 or somewhere around there. I'm happy with that! I'm happy just to participate! :)
