Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

Congrats. It is great to beat a goal. Going downhill can be tough on the body (quads and knees), glad you rocked those.

The fastest downhill time was 7:23. It was a two mile hilly stretch of road, so we ran up and down the hills multiple times. I believe one of the hills was a seven or eight percent grade. That's according to the road sign posted there. My quads still hurt today. Yesterday, I did more hill work, along with a few leg exercises. Today is a rest day. It's official, I'm in.

DH and I signed up this weekend! So excited. We'll have done at least 3 halfs by then but 10 miles will be a new distance and our first night race.

Should be a blast :cool1:

I got a 7 mile run in this morning with in about 1 hour and 9 minutes. I was pretty happy with it and it felt really good. Especially since I was only planning on doing 5 miles. I'm thinking TOT might just end up becoming a focus race so I can see what to expect for the F&W race.

I was kinda wishing it was closer and I didn't have to run through the heat of summer (and humidity...). O well, I guess I just have something to look forward to through the summer.

I don't have any plans but would love to meet up with some fellow disers!

Would we want to do a meet before or after the race? The benefit of before would be having awesome people to hang out with at the after-party/while running. The benefit of after is getting to show off that bling

I also would be in favor of some kind of meet up! Especially since my trip is a solo one!

Mine too!! It's starting to look that way, at least. I would love to meet up beforehand, and maybe again after...I plan on checking in 9/27 and checking out 10/1 or 10/2, depending on costs and how much I can work between now and then (which I'm thinking will be a LOT!). I think next pay period is registration time :) This will be my first runDisney race, I'm so excited!!

Yay! It's my first RunDisney event too!! Sooo excited! And I definitely think there should be some meet ups! I do have to say though, it might end up not being a solo trip for me, I just met someone really great this past weekend, so we'll see!!!!

So obviously I don't know when your next pay period is, but just wanted to give you a heads up that if you can swing it, you should try to register before March 27. On March 28, the registration fee goes up to $105.

I want to do this so bad. The prices are great, and my parents are considering it. But... I may give my trainer a heart attack if I suggest another race after doing the Disneyland half, the San Francisco half (1st portion), and rim to rim in the Grand Canyon all within three months of each other (GC in June, SF end of July, and of course DL race is first weekend in Sept). Yeah I'm a little whacko for long distance races. But this one may have something to do with the fact that I've never been to the parks at Halloween time. I want to go to MMNSHP.

Ok i signed up my son today for the kids race. BF and I willnot be doing this as we have just recently started training for anything like this. I was really just wondering how the kids events are. Will there be characters there? Is it an overall fun atmosphere? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello everyone :) I have read through this thread because I am thinking of singing up for the 10 mile race. However...I have never ran a race before. I have already started jogging to train for it, but I am nowhere near any of the times/distance you guys have been posting. I am not the greatest runner and I really need to work on my breathing, I always get out of breath way before my body starts to get tired.

I really want to push myself and sign up for this race. Are there all sorts of people who run the disney races or am I going to be really far back in the pack and feel bad about myself?

Anyone have any advice for me? I want to sign up before the late March price increase if I am going to do this.

My 3 kids did the kids races in January. It was certainly fun for them. They got a t-shirt and a "medal" (which was rubber but cute). I would say that the races are slightly organized chaos. Which was fine. We had the disadvantage of having 3 children in 3 separate races which added a bit to the chaos but was still manageable. I think that I'm going to have my kids do the 5k with me in January, 2013 so that we can all be together. I'll have my youngest in the stroller and the older 2 will run/walk. There were not characters during the kids races in January. (I'm not bringing my family for the ToT race so it won't be an issue this time.)

All sorts of people run Disney races! Go for it!!!! My 1st race ever was the Disney World 1/2 marathon in January, 2011. It was an amazing experience. I'm MUCH slower than the times you see posted. Plenty of people run or run/walk or walk these races at paces that are close to the time limit (16 min/mile). While there are speed demons doing this race, too, it's certainly appropriate for ALL levels of experience! I found that having a target race keeps me motivated to train on days that I don't feel like running. Don't get caught up in comparing yourself to people who are running 8 min/miles. I don't think I can run an 8 minute mile for ONE mile much less 10 miles!!! And I still love racing and I still love getting a medal. And nobody has EVER judged me for being relatively slow. (Or at least they've never said anything to my face... :lmao: ). Enjoy the process and the experience! :cheer2:

Don't worry! Disney races attract runners and walkers of ALL skill levels, and people at the back of the pack are treated exactly the same as those at the front. It's a PERFECT place for a first race! GO FOR IT!

As you train, remember this important saying:

DFL>DNF>>DNS

Dead ***** Last is greater than Did Not Finish, which is infinitely greater than Did Not Start.

Enjoy the journey!

As for your breathing concerns, are you maybe starting out too fast? Try slowing down. There were times when I started out (age 38, couch potato) that my husband would literally be walking next to me as I "jogged" along. Better to "under-do" it than "over-do" it: you'll be more likely to keep going, and you'll be less likely to sustain an injury. Consider a run-walk plan as you're getting started.

Good luck!! Enjoy!! and CONGRATULATIONS!! :cheer2:

Hi there! I haven't been real active on this thread, but had to respond to your inquiry... YES, with training, you can do it and ABSOLUTELY, there is every kind of person you can imagine in runDisney events! Though I ran occasionally for fitness, I never bothered with endurance training or running races until I watched the tail end of this year's WDW Marathon. It was incredibly motivating and inspiring. Having seen that and having run my first race in the Tangled 5K, I can say without hesitation that runners and walkers of all speeds and abilities enter Disney races.

The TOT 10-Miler will be my first long race, leading up to the 2013 Princess Half. I use the Galloway run-walk-run method and it's made all the difference for me in upping my distances. I won't be among the speediest out there - but I fully intend to FINISH! :thumbsup2

I echo what everyone else is saying...if you commit to the training you can definitely do it and a Disney race is a GREAT first race. You'll see runners of all ages, sizes and ability and it's a very welcoming and encouraging atmosphere. IF you end up in the back of the pack, don't feel bad about yourself, like you said! Front or back, you're still doing it...same distance, same medal!! Everyone starts somewhere and it's usually no where near where they will end up :) The absolute hardest thing I had to come to grips with when I started running, with the Princess half 2011 as my end goal, was that being out there during my training and comparing myself to all the other faster, skinnier, or whatever, runners was detrimental. Once I was finally able to get over that (it took a while) my confidence grew, I started to recognize my improvements however small they were, and was proud of myself each time I got to a new distance or faster time...even if it was only by a few seconds...it was still improvement and proof of hard work! I have a little paper posted at my desk at work that says "It's not going to be easy, but it's going to be worth it." That sums it up nicely I think.

Take the plunge and sign up...knowing you are registered and paid the non-refundable $$ can be a good motivator!

Another slow run/walker here. Technically, the "official" training doesn't even start until May so I think there is plenty of time for anyone to get started and be successful. For me, I've just been keeping on reminding myself that "slow and steady wins (or at least finishes) the race." I think the key is stick to the plan, and keep going. It will be my first long race as well, but my mind-set is not finishing is not an option. When I started in October, I was around the 18-19 minute per mile mark. Now, I hover around 16 most of the time and can be closer to 14 on a good day. With 6 months left, I think I'll be fine.

Welcome - You can do this! You will have plenty of time to train. I am a run/walk Galloway girl and highly recommend his methods.

You can get some local race experience before hand. There are TONS of races in and around Columbus you can check out.

Where in Columbus are you? I am a Worthington girl. I LOVE Highbanks for my training and Premier Races for my racing locally.

Oh gosh everyone is so nice and encouraging here :goodvibes

I forget how to multi quote so I am going to reference people by name.

DrMomof3

Thank you for letting me know that not everyone is a super human speed demon lol!

GBBTomorrow

That is a very good quote, and very true. Not finishing anywhere near first is a lot better than never having started at all. Maybe I do go too fast, I can do about 2 miles at approx. 10-12 minutes each, but then I am done and need to walk. So sounds like maybe I do need to go slower. And I hear ya about the walking/running pace, I am only 5'3, so when I walk or run with others who are taller I gotta put in more effort to keep up.

PrincessV

Time to google Galloway method. And thank you for the encouragement :goodvibes

Cripey

I don't have many issues comparing myself with people when I am out jogging at home, my biggest fear would be to show up at this race and be quickly outran by everyone and then I probably would be self conscious. But you are right, I just need to pay attention to myself. I also agree with your quote. I am not a good runner at all, but I want to do this race so I can prove something to myself.

AnotherPrincess

wow, we do have a lot of time to train, don't we? :yay: lol, looks like that is the jumping jack smiley

DisneyRunnerGirl

Hello :) We are pretty close, I live in Clintonville. I was super close to signing up for the Turkey Trot but I was expected to be at my parents in PA. Then I was going to sign up for a race in May, but my little sister is graduating from college that same day.

Race is 51% full so anyone still deciding to register take advantage of the early registration price before it goes up
Buckeye:
I am super slow...when i decided to do the Tangle 5K in January I went out the first time and ran at about 12mm but I couldn't do more than a mile on that because of my breathing, all my expert friends here and elsewhere told me to slow down...I did and my longest run/walk so far has been a little over 5miles at a 15mm. I enjoy it and don't feel out of breath at all.
I will echo everyone else here in telling you to look at Jeff Galloway's program. I do all my run/walks at 1min and 1min. I will try and bump up to 1.30/1.30 this week. I'm also waiting for May to start his official training program for this particular race. In between I'm going out 3 times a week and doing some light weights for arms and shoulders.
My goal is to do the Princess 1/2 next year. In between going for some 5K's and the ine and Dine 5K.
Have fun, you can do it

Finally signed up for this race, looks like its filling up fast. I haven't done any running since The Princess, slowly getting back into it. Trying to figure out the pain in my feet when I run. Really looking forward to this race though:)

Jennifer

My sisiter called me and said it was 51% full. So I looked at rundisney.com, yep 51% full. People must be registering before the price increase. I called the irun line and the CM there told me everyone was calling for this race and wine & dine. That CM also directed me to a youtube video to make your own tutu. Ohio Buckeye, I plan to run, walk and take in the atmosphere of the event. I will also be stopping for photo ops. If you need any help with a program, you might want to look at the couch to 5k plan.

I am registered!
I'm walking my first 5k on Saturday.
I plan on following the work-out plan that is posted on the run disney website.
