Official Hurricane Frances Thread - Part II

I also just heard that Port Canaveral is getting those very strong winds. I hope that the terminal can withstand this. My parents and sister are due to depart next Saturday and hope that they can make their trip.

Reported Seas At the Port of 29 ' Yikes

WESH 2 just had a live reporter who said officials have toured Cocoa Beach and report no severe damage and 20% of the area still has power.

We're 6 miles inland from Cocoa Beach in Suntree/Viera and still have all services (phone, power, cable, internet) and no appreciable damage beyond landscaping & trees down. So far so good. WInds are sustained at 65+ here with higher gusts but so far the house is holding together!

Hoping to board tomorrow for our long-awaited 7-night Eastern Magic, wait - er, make that a 5-night "cruise-to-somewhere-although-we-don't-know-just-where-or-when-we're-leaving." Here's hoping the port is okay.

Thanks for the info, we'd like to own a house like that in the sunshine state someday (even with the hurricanes!!)...do you think the ships will be able to port tomorrow? Cathie:wave2:

I think the ship will be lucky if it can dock on Tuesday--the winds will still be pretty high tomorrow and access to the islands will be restricted. It might be able to dock--but if it does, the passengers may not be allowed to disembark. Just my guess :(

Port Canaveral: Cruise ships won't be in Monday
All six home-ported cruise ships are not expected to be in on Monday, but instead it would likely be a Monday or Tuesday return, said Canaveral Port Authority spokeswoman Dixie Sansom.

"All of this is, of course, is contingent upon Frances being gone and the Coast Guard opening the port," she said. "It has to first be inspected for shoaling and for obstacles in the water before the Coast Guard makes a decision on when it can re-open to boat traffic."

Thanks Lisa. How are you all holding up? Any news on your neighborhood? Any neighbors complaining of the smell of musty laundry??? ;D

Erin :D

Guys, I highly doubt the Magic and Wonder are going to be anywhere near port by tomorrow. I live all the way on the other coast and down in Naples and we now have 45 mile per hour winds with 60 mph gusts and just lost a tree in our front yard. My relatives just left this am to try and make it back to Jupiter. My 2nd cousin's husband couldn't come here to ride it out as he's a Palm Beach County sheriff and it's a mess over there. Boats are sinking we speak in Melbourne and New Smeryna (sp?) Beach is getting whacked big time according to our friends who are there riding it out. The weather channel people that are reporting in Melbourne just had the roof peel away from the hotel that they are staying in. The power plants are under water in Vero Beach. There are 4 million people without power here in Florida and that number will be growing as the storm continues across the state. There is still no gas anywhere. The ports of Miami and Fort Lauderdale are still closed as of 3 pm today. All I can say is over 2.5 million people evacuated their homes and a lot of them went north. The roads into Florida are going to be like a parking lot as Floridians try to get back to their homes and see the damage. If my car was in the port, I would be worried about it not being under water when I returned and not having stuff thrown all over it.
Again, think twice before coming down anytime soon.

Winds are now gusting at 124 mph at Port Canaveral!

Hi Carolyn--

I am so sorry about your cruise (you were supposed to be on the 9/4, right?). I am glad that your home and family are alright. Keep us posted when you can.

Erin :D

Hurricanes are rated based on sustained winds and not gusts--a sustained wind is 2 minutes or longer (learned that from the news :) So though the gust is 124mph--it did not change the CAT of the hurricane.

on the WFTV website--a family stayed in their home in Cocoa Beach as the home was built far above hurricane standards. Their home is a fortress and they have not had any flooding. They are 2 blocks from the beach.

The cocoa beach hilton lost 10 of its beach facing windows--blown out by Frances. It is an ocean front hotel and no salt water has breached the hotel (good news for me, I hope--I'm 25 minutes south of there).

All I know is I don't have any power and will not be allowed to go home :(

So if my neighbors stayed behind--they deserve to smell my stinky laundry ;)

Animal Control evididently went through the county to pick up animals--maybe they found my fugitive cat.

When I hear more I will report--and if I find any canaveral area info I will post it.

I'll be there with my family! I need to get out of this house. We have some water damage, but weathered the storm really well. Today is cleanup day, tomorrow, we finally get out on the water!!!

Over here on the west coast we are still getting the feeder bands as it tries to reform over the gulf.
Winds are still gusting, and the rains are not letting up. Lots of flooding and tornado warnings.
Hope all on the east coast are okay.
Luckyandpooh,
How did WDW hold up.

How is Clearwater faring....my 86 year old is in a ALF and we have not been able to get through yet.

MJ

MJ,
Clearwater has been getting hammered so far today.
There has been some flooding in areas near the intercoastal waterways.
The area the worst hit is called Shore Acres.
Lots of flooding in Tampa too.
I'll keep your family in my prayers.
Lynn
